This is in response to a request you put in your papers about readers letting you know our favorite locally owned businesses. My favorite locally owned business is rising sun farm in Whitehall, Washington County, New York. They have the very best beef Ive tasted in a long time: 100% black angus, all grass fed and dry aged. they also sell all natural pork, chicken and eggs. J.C. (from their website) Rising Sun Farm is a sustainable family farm in upstate New York. We primarily raise 100% pure bred, registered Black Angus cattle that are grass-fed and raised using superior grassfed beef product which has drawn the attention of consumers throughout the Tri-state area. Our Black Angus beef products are of a higher quality and more taste than store bought beef due to the careful practices and standards we use to raise our animals as well as the care put into processing the products. Our cattle live a comfortable, low stress life and they are given no artificial growth hormones or antibiotics. We also produce farm fresh eggs, chicken and pork products using similar sustainable methods. All images featured on our website are of Rising Sun Farm and our products produced from the farm. The Farm is owned and operated by Levi Cahan with partners Jeffrey and Sally Cahan. At a young age, Levi developed a passion for agriculture and set a goal to own and operate his own farm. Levi attended Cornell University to obtain a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science and Masters Degree in Agriculture Education. Levi spent a semester in New Zealand studying rotational grazing and noticed the benefits of feeding animals on an all grass-fed diet. This prompted his search for the perfect farm, which he found in Whitehall, New York. Creating sustainability for the small-farming community is vital. In order to raise awareness and education, Levi teaches high school Agriculture in the Schuylerville, New York area. In addition to educating the next generation farmers, it is important that consumers are equally knowledgeable about their Rising Sun Farm products. When you call or email, youll talk to a farmer (or more likely the answering machine were outside working. But dont worry, we will call you back just make sure to leave a message).

ON THE FARM
by Andy Manne
HERE ARE THE BIG-PICTURE ISSUES THAT AFFECT THE WORTH OF YOUR FARM: Soil type, drainage and location all play into the dollar value of your farmland. But as the agricultural industry becomes more global, so do the factors impacting your farm. 1. Global population growth. The worlds population is forecast to reach 9 billion by 2050. While that is a significant increase from the current 7 billion people. 2. Water. Like population, water is not dispersed evenly around the world. While water issues are more pronounced in other areas of the world, recent prolonged U.S. drought conditions have made water supply important. 3. Wall Street. High farmland returns have attracted the interest of investors, landowners, lenders and operators, adding more competitors at farmland auctions. 4. Interest rates. For the past few years, many farmers have been able to purchase land with loans at extremely low interest rates. 5. Shale energy. Like water, the potential of whats under your land might become more important than the soil on top. The U.S. is now the largest producer of oil and gas in the world. We are still importing, but our trade deficit is starting to shrink. 6. Foreign exchange rates. A strong U.S. dollar equals more value for U.S. products, but it also means U.S. products are more expensive to foreign buyers. A falling dollar equals high commodity prices, which raise farmer profits and increases rent and land values. On the flip side, a rising-dollar environment lessens farmland values. 7. Regulation. Whether dealing with banking, ethanol mandates or animal welfare, regulations are an invisible threat for U.S. farms. Staying up-to-date on U.S. regulations is vital. 8. Wine. Why would wine make this list? Wine consumption in the U.S. is going up about 14% per year, and in the world it is going up about 4% a year. Demand drives change and now the U.S. is the largest wine consumer in the world. This is a tremendous shift that has led to a change in the dynamics of the price of land. By comparison, an acre of corn valued at $12,000 in the Midwest translates into an acre of grapes valued at $100,000 in the heart of Napa. Land value is determined by the value of what you can produce off that land. 9. The rise of China. China as a population center, buyer of U.S. goods and global player is top-of-mind for the ag industry. One of Chinas biggest problems is lack of rainfall. China encompasses 20% of the earths population and 7% of the earths water resources. Now China is trying to buy areas that can produce food. 10. Global trade. As incomes around the world have increased, especially in China and other emerging nations, trade with the U.S. has also increased. While more demand is positive for ag markets this shift has led to stresses on agriculture. Weve seen increased commodity price swings and more volatility.
