convention in February 1996. The occasion was a full but gratifying day on this post-Thanksgiving Sabbath for the 200 attendees at the Filipino-American International SDA Church (FAISDA) during the morning worship service. The timely message, "For Such a Time as This" was delivered by a very dynamic and eloquent speaker, Pastor George W. Brown, former president of the Inter-American division and author of several SDA books, including a morning devotional book. An impromptu AUP choir under the directorship of Mrs. Shirley Fiedacan provided the prayer responses and special music "If My People" for the hour of worship. There were about 100 alumni and former students of PUC/AUP and their families who stayed for the AUP Hour, which immediately convened after a scrumptious lunch. We were highly honored by the presence of our dedicated EASNAC president, Dr. Salcor Quines, who drove over a thousand miles amid sleet and snow in order to be with us for the induction and dedication of the newly elected Heartland Subchapter officers for the 2013-2016 term. The meeting was also graced by the unexpected attendance of one of the oldest living PUC alumna, Mrs. Paz Villanueva Peng, "a winter snowbird" who happened to be staying with her daughter Aileen in nearby Orlando, Florida. Mrs. Peng was an elementary graduate at the Pasay Junior College in 1925 and a college graduate in 1938. She also shared a brief history of PUC, which started as a junior college at Pasay city in 1917 before it was transferred to Baesa, Caloocan City in 1932. A video presentation of the old PUC and new AUP campuses was the highlight of the afternoon program, with special thanks to Dr. Elma Lou Roda for providing the CD. The children and grandchildren of our alumni rendered the musical parts in the afternoon program. A large percentage of the participants were by the younger generation members. The EASNAC president gave a brief report of recent changes of EASNAC in an openforum. The mini-rally ended with a sun down worship, conducted by Pastor Roldan Mendoza, whose fitting message was an emphasis on "UNITY." This was followed by a hearty fellowship dinner and everyone separated in good spirits, with high hopes and a rekindled flame for the loyalty and support of our beloved alma mater. By Lita Gensolin, President, Heartland subchapter.

EASNAC BOT MEET FOR FALL COUNCIL

The EASNAC Board of Trustees poses for a posterity picture during the BOT Meeting in the FilipinoAmerican SDA Church in Beltsville, Maryland. Members came from all over the eastern USA and Canada and as far as Texas. Photo credits: Mervyn Lee

A cold and windy Friday greeted the delegation of subchapter presidents and executive officers of EASNAC who came to converge at the Filipino-American Capital SDA Church in Beltsville, MD, November 8-9, 2013. Edgar Pilapil, president of Trillium subchapter (Canada) gave the Friday evenings message entitled The Power of Light. He introduced himself as a teacher, not a preacher. A mathematics and physics professor at Kingsway College in Toronto, he used math and physics principles to enlighten us to the powerful role of Light in animals, plants and people. Light not only gives life, it also softens the heart and dispels darkness physically and spiritually. It shines on everyone, rich or poor and as children of light, it is our mission to let His Light reach those who are in still in 3

Dr. Ronald Quiba, EASNAC Vice President, led the Sabbath Schools lesson on The Day of Atonement. The Fil-Am church is gifted with talented musicians who provided beautiful uplifting music throughout the weekend. Pastor Isaias Santos (President, Michigan Subchapter) hour of worship message centered on Philippians 2:5-11, Christ Jesus in You. He stressed that only as we are committed to the Christ we confess can we be effective witnesses and leaders. The warm and gracious hospitality of the alumni and members of the Fil-Am church was deeply Pellentesque: appreciated by all the EASNAC officers and guests who were served delicious lunch and supper meals. The Sabbath vesper speaker was Sam Villanueva, Executive Director and Editor of the AUPian. His message Zero to Hero was a colorful narrative on the life of Gideon as portrayed in Judges 6 and 7. This humble farmer who confessed that he was a member of the weakest clan of Israel was Gods chosen warrior of his time. Acknowledging his weakness, he challenged God to prove to him that he was indeed the chosen one to lead Gods people to battle and God did not fail him. We may experience the same victory as we submit our will to Gods direction. All through the meetings, prayers in behalf of all our countrymen affected by the super typhoon Haiyan ascended to our merciful God. The awful devastation in Tacloban City was really heartbreaking as news of this disaster kept our attention throughout the weekend. These were the items discussed at this council meeting: EASNAC Inc.s Bylaws now govern all the activities of this Alumni Association; the monies (donations and fund contributions) funneled through this corporation are considered tax deductible. Although a regular membership fee will no longer be required of alumni members, planned giving will be encouraged and promoted. Consectetuer: Corporate seal and new logo are still in the works with Israel Castro heading the Design Ad Hoc Committee. Financial Management of this new corporation which includes budget, revenue, fund reporting system; fund-raising ideas for the Endowment fund are all items still on the table for final discussion. A sample of the pledge card was presented by President Salcor Quines, but no decision was reached as to its implementation. Ron Quiba presented a list of activities to promote Subchapters successful involvement: annual picnics; organizing community outreach activities like Health Expos and Blood Drives; sponsoring AUP working students; sponsoring a Sabbath School program once a year at neighboring SDA churches to expose EASNAC/AUP to the community; annual fund-raising banquets.

This picture above is inside of a United States Air Force C-17 plane that brought in relief goods donated by world governments and ferried from Manila to Tacloban, Leyte. On the way back to Manila it carried displaced people from Leyte, just like this one, a mercy of flight that can carry over 600 passengers at one time. The United States armed forces using the Marines, Air Force and Navy have greatly alleviated the suffering of the people from Tacloban and Samar. The Israeli Defense Forces went to Northern Cebu to help in the medical needs of the Cebuanos. They brought with them a hospital MASH unit and after a couple weeks of alleviating sufferings in Cebu donated their field hospital to the Government of Cebu. The British government sent in 2 of their naval ships to help. All the Asian nations participated too. Twenty-seven countries sent reliefs and personnel to ease the sufferings of the Filipino people. We are very grateful for the help that have been sent.

Editorial: Getting ready for the next big disaster

For most of Novembers daily news, newspaper headlines dominated the deadly results of the typhoon named Haiyan that slammed the Philippines with the worlds strongest typhoon ever recorded in the history of the modern world. The devastation it left as it moved across the central Philippines, caused deaths, (now totaling almost 7,000 with about 1700 still missing) wiped thousands of homes, and caused starvation, disease and homelessness. Concerned Filipinos from around the world and the international community rose up to meet the challenge of sending help to the wounded country, the Philippines. The City of Tacloban in Leyte Island suffered the brunt of the typhoon with 95% of the city wiped-out and most deaths occurring. Similarly, island where the typhoon passed: Northern Cebu, Panay Island, Northern Palawan suffered the same devastation but did not get as much media attention as Tacloban did. The United Nation estimates that 2 million of the Philippine population has been displaced from their homes. I am sure most of the members of EASNAC did their part in their own way to send some tangible help in terms of monies and items to help our kababayan (countrymen). It seemed like a lot of EASNAC members wanted to do more aside from what they have already done. They wanted EASNAC to have done something as a group, to have taken a more active role of being able to send help. The officers of EASNAC wished we could have done more as an organization. Historically in the past, EASNAC have sent help in times of calamity in the Philippines, mentioning Typhoon Ondoy particularly from recent memory. When Typhoon Haiyan (also called typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines) happened, it caught EASNAC with paralyzing effect because of the huge devastation, and causing country governments around the world instead to come to its aid. However, EASNAC as an organization should have also done something to send aid. It is true that Filipinos are resilient in nature, that our long history of colonization and effects of natural disasters have made us so. The Philippines will rise again. Our indomitable spirit will rise up to the occasion. With a little help, Tacloban will once again be an active city. In a meeting of the new EASNAC, Inc. on December 8, 2013, budgets will be drawn for its working committees. The Disaster Committee that will be tapped in times of disasters like Typhoon Haiyan, will be budgeted so that we will be ready anytime we are called to help. This will be the feature of the new EASNAC, Inc., among other changes. Meanwhile, the need in the Philippine disaster is still greatly needed. Please continue to send your help individually until the people who have been affected by the great typhoon Haiyan can rise again. I am pretty sure the help we send will have a great impact on the lives of those who have been helped. By Sammy Villanueva

A short story
In about 17 days from this date, Christmas will come. The reason for the season is Jesus, who came to us as a Babe and died for us in Calvary. It is Gods gift for humanity. We can avail of this gift for our salvation. It is a season for giving. I post here a story sent by Ado Miranda, a past president of EASNAC. It gave me a tear as I read the story. I hope it touches your hearts as well. Let us open our hearts this season. Let us think of the needs in our Philippines. The havoc of Typhoon Haiyan still grips our hearts, as we see their needs. If you cannot give anything right now, please say a prayer for them. I shed a tear for the needy students of Adventist University of the Philippines. Their needs are immense to get an education. They have to hurdle tuitions, need of food, clothes and living conditions to be able to be able to reach their goals. We can help them in every little way we can. Please have them in your prayers. EASNAC as our alumni association has done away with individual membership contribution. We are now relying on your generosity to keep our alumni association funded with your generous contribution before the year closes to an end. We have so many needs for our active alumni association. We need to raise funds for medical missions, calamity funds, scholarship fund for our needy students, fund to help upgrade AUPs members of the faculty and to help with AUPs projects. It is a time for giving. Now read the story below and see where your heart leads you. /Sam Villanueva

"Good morning," said a woman as she walked up to the man sitting on the ground. The man

11

The AUPian in Cyberlink

slowly looked up. This was a woman clearly accustomed to the finer things of life. Her coat was new. She looked like she had never missed a meal in her life. His first thought was that she wanted to make fun of him, like so many others had done before. "Leave me alone," he growled.... To his amazement, the woman continued standing. She was smiling -- her even white teeth displayed in dazzling rows. "Are you hungry?" she asked. "No," he answered sarcastically. "I've just come from dining with the president. Now go away." The woman's smile became even broader. Suddenly the man felt a gentle hand under his arm. "What are you doing, lady?" the man asked angrily. "I said to leave me alone. Just then a policeman came up. "Is there any problem, ma'am?" he asked. "No problem here, officer," the woman answered. "I'm just trying to get this man to his feet. Will you help me?" The officer scratched his head. "That's old Jack. He's been a fixture around here for a couple of years. What do you want with him?" "See that cafeteria over there?" she asked. "I'm going to get him something to eat and get him out of the cold for awhile." "Are you crazy, lady?" the homeless man resisted. "I don't want to go in there!" Then he felt strong hands grab his other arm and lift him up. "Let me go, officer. I didn't do anything." "This is a good deal for you, Jack" the officer answered. "Don't blow it." Finally, and with some difficulty, the woman and the police officer got Jack into the cafeteria and sat him at a table in a remote corner. It was the middle of the morning, so most of the breakfast crowd had already left and the lunch bunch had not yet arrived... The manager strode across the cafeteria and stood by his table. "What's going on here, officer?" he asked. "What is all this, is this man in trouble?" "This lady brought this man in here to be fed," the policeman answered. "Not in here!" the manager replied angrily. "Having a person like that here is bad for business.." Old Jack smiled a toothless grin. "See, lady. I told you so. Now if you'll let me go. I didn't want to come here in the first place." The woman turned to the cafeteria manager and smiled....... "Sir, are you familiar with Eddy and Associates, the banking firm down the street?" "Of course I am," the manager answered impatiently. "They hold their weekly meetings in one of my banquet rooms." "And do you make a godly amount of money providing food at these weekly meetings?" "What business is that of yours?" I, sir, am Penelope Eddy, president and CEO of the company." "Oh." The woman smiled again. "I thought that might make a difference." She glanced at the cop who was busy stifling a giggle. "Would you like to join us in a cup of coffee and a meal, officer?" "No thanks, ma'am," the officer replied. "I'm on duty." "Then, perhaps, a cup of coffee to go?" "Yes, maam. That would be very nice." The cafeteria manager turned on his heel, "I'll get your coffee for you right away, officer." The officer watched him walk away. "You certainly put him in his place," he said. "That was not my intent. Believe it or not, I have a reason for all this." She sat down at the table across from her amazed dinner guest. She stared at him intently.. "Jack, do you remember me?" Old Jack searched her face with his old, rheumy eyes. "I think so -- I mean you do look familiar." "I'm a little older perhaps," she said. "Maybe I've even filled out more than in my younger days when you worked here, and I came through that very door, cold and hungry." "Ma'am?" the officer said questioningly. He couldn't believe that such a magnificently turned out woman could ever have been hungry. "I was just out of college," the woman began. "I had come to the city looking for a job, but I couldn't find anything. Finally I was down to my last few cents and had been kicked out of my apartment. I walked the streets for days. It was February and I was cold and nearly starving. I saw this place and walked in on the off chance that I could get something to eat." Jack lit up with a

12

smile. "Now I remember," he said.. "I was behind the serving counter. You came up and asked me if you could work for something to eat. I said that it was against company policy." "I know," the woman continued. "Then you made me the biggest roast beef sandwich that I had ever seen, gave me a cup of coffee, and told me to go over to a corner table and enjoy it. I was afraid that you would get into trouble... Then, when I looked over and saw you put the price of my food in the cash register, I knew then that everything would be all right." "So you started your own business?" Old Jack said. "I got a job that very afternoon. I worked my way up. Eventually I started my own business that, with the help of God, prospered." She opened her purse and pulled out a business card.. "When you are finished here, I want you to pay a visit to a Mr. Lyons...He's the personnel director of my company. I'll go talk to him now and I'm certain he'll find something for you to do around the office." She smiled. "I think he might even find the funds to give you a little advance so that you can buy some clothes and get a place to live until you get on your feet... If you ever need anything, my door is always opened to you." There were tears in the old man's eyes. "How can I ever thank you?" he said. "Don't thank me," the woman answered. "To God goes the glory. Thank Jesus...... He led me to you." Outside the cafeteria, the officer and the woman paused at the entrance before going their separate ways.... "Thank you for all your help, officer," she said. "On the contrary, Ms. Eddy," he answered. "Thank you. I saw a miracle today, something that I will never forget. And.. And thank you for the coffee." God is going to shift things around for you today and let things work in your favor. God closes doors no man can open & God opens doors no man can close.. If you need God to open some doors for you...please share this story.
