A current of 10 cos(100t) A is applied through a circuit containing a series combination of a resistor, inductor and capacitor with values R = 10 Ohms, L = 0.05 milli-Henry, and C = 1000 micro-Farad. Calculate the power dissipated in each circuit element. [3]

Question 2: [25 marks] (a)


Open circuit and short circuit tests were conducted on a 10 KVA, 220V / 110V transformer with all measuring equipments placed on the high voltage side. Determine the parameters of the approximate equivalent circuit. Draw the approximate equivalent circuit with all parameters referred to the primary side.

The magnetic circuit shown below was constructed using cast iron with a relative permeability of 800. The air-gap distance is 0.60 mm. There is a uniform cross sectional area of 0.8x10-4 m2. The mean path length of the material is 0.15 m. Calculate the current I through the 5000 turn coil that is required [8] to produce a flux of 3.83x10-4 Wb across the air gap. Neglect the effect of fringing.

A 7.46 kW, 230 V, shunt-connected motor takes a line current of 40 A. The armature winding resistance is 0.25 ohms, and the field winding resistance is 230 ohms. Consider the effect of brush voltage drop of 2 Volts. The core and frictional losses are 380 W. i) ii) iii) iv) Calculate the armature current. Calculate the field current. Design an ideal operational amplifier based circuit to amplify the voltage signal from source v s which has variable internal impedance of 200800 . The amplifier closed loop voltage gain should be -20 10%. Assume resistors of any resistance value are available but all resistances vary within 2 % of their nominal value. (i) Draw the amplifier circuit diagram. Include the voltage source. [2] (ii) Specify the resistor values and show by calculation that the amplifier voltage gain is within the [4] required tolerance. (iii) State the value of the output impedance of this amplifier. [1] (i) Draw a circuit diagram based on three positive-edge triggered T-type flip flops with the following inputs

Draw the circuit diagram of a full-wave rectifier with a source vin(t) and load resistor RL. [2] Given the input to the rectifier vin (t ) = 5 + 10 sin(500t ) volts, sketch one cycle of the input waveform and the corresponding output waveform on the same set of axes assuming the diodes have a forward voltage drop of 1 volt. [4] State the maximum reverse voltage a diode in this circuit is subjected to. [1]
