FOREWORD

The Seismic Atlas of Indonesian Oil and Gas Fields developed as an extension of the very popular Oil and Gas Fields Atlas. Operators provided seismic lines to illustrate the structure and stratigraphy of nearly 100 selected oil and gas fields throughout Indonesia. This first volume presents representative seismic lines along with updated maps, cross sections, and data sheets for 50 fields in Sumatra. A companion volume will present similar information for fields in Java, Kalimantan, Natuna, and Eastern Indonesia. PERTAMINA approval is required to 'release the seismic and updated geologic and production data from these fields. PERTAMINA duly authorizes release of the data for this volume. Seismic lines have long been used to define exploratory prospects for drilling, and the interpreted lines provided with this volume will serve as inspiration for new exploration. They also provide analogs for deveIopment and exploitation, as seismic interpretation recently emerged as an important tool for field development and enhanced oil recovery projects. Compiling the data in this volume was a long and difficult task shared by the IPA, oil and gas field operators, and by PERTAMINA. We hope it will find widespread use to support efficient exploration and development.

Many individuals and organizations freely contributed the time, effort, and expertise necessary to assemble Volume 1 of the Seismic Atlas of Indonesian Oil and Gas Fields. PERTAMINA and the various oil field operators provided raw data along with geophysical and geological interpretations. Management and staff of these companies also assisted in working wi th the IPA to correct errors and eliminate inconsistencies throughout the project. Their cooperation made this volume possible. Members of the Seismic Atlas Subcommittee, listed on the opposite page, invested 3 years of constant effort in this project. Geologists and geophysicists in this group collated information, rescaled seismic interpretations to a size suitable for publication, and tirelessly checked and rechecked the results. The resulting compilation provides a seismic picture book that illustrates and documents oil and gas accumulations. These range from world famous giants like Minas, Duri, and Arun to smaller, locally significant fields. All of the field studies are useful as templates for nearby exploration and development. Some have broader applications as analogs for projects beyond the local area and, in some cases, even outside of Indonesia. We look forward to use of this work by the Indonesian oil industry and international oil community for improved exploration and production of petroleum resources.
