Area and Perimeter

Date: Duration of Lesson: Week Class Size: 18 Level: Grade 5 and 6

long sequence
Topic: Measurement (Area and Perimeter)

Focus: Calculating area and perimeter of Squares, Rectangles and compound shapes.

VELS Focus:
VELS Strands Level: 4 Domains: Mathematics Dimensions: Measurement

Key elements of standards to which lesson is focused:

‘They measure as accurately as needed for the purpose of the activity.’

Equipment/Resources Required:
Counting area with Coco (Digilearn) Centimetere Grid on A3 paper Catalogues

Scissors and Glue

Stage/Time Tasks – Student Action, Activities, Group Formation Teacher Action including
assessment
Monday AREA MONDAY

RESOURCES: ‘Finding area’ worksheet

Introduction
- area is the surface that a shape covers. Measured in cm, m, km square.

- Cm km m etc measures the length of a line, cm square measures the surface a shape
covers.
- To work out the area of squares and rectangles we measure the length by the width (i.e two
sides that aren’t parallel)

- The first shape in Coco (L139) demonstrates this nicely.

- We need to apply this knowledge to help us work out the area of compound shapes (shapes
that are a combination of squares and rectangles)

- Scaffold by using the next shape on Coco.

- Ask for input on the third shape

- Explain how they are to go about working out the area of the shapes on the first sheet. It is
importat they develop a strategy for solving the area of compound shapes.

- I’ll demonstrate that they need to draw the shapes as they split them up in their head in their
maths book to demonstrate they have a good strategy for working out compound shapes.
Wednesday and Thursday WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY

ACTIVITY: House Design

GOAL: To practically apply knowledge of area and perimeter and develop skills further in calculating
area and perimeter.

Students have been working on developing skills in area and perimeter over the course of Monday
and Tuesday sessions.

These sessions have shown they are competent at working out the area and perimeter of squares
and rectangles, and are also beginning to draw shapes to meet a requirement (e.g. draw a shape
with an area of 6 cm2.

This activity aims to have students practicing these skills in a ‘real life’ context.

ACTIVITY
Resources: A3 grid sheet, House Design workout sheet, trundle wheel, Catalogues.

• Begin with a brief reflection of area and perimeter to have students keying in to the lesson.
• Explain we are going to apply our skills practically, to design a dream home.
• There are only a few requirements of our dream home (must fit on A3 sheet provided, single
story.
• Consideration must be given to types/ number of and size of rooms.
• 1 square on A3 sheet equals 1 m².
• Grey lead must be used, and MUST use a ruler.
• All rooms must be labeled neatly (demonstrate on the board)
• On the workout sheet, areas and perimeters of rooms must be shown. (this is to test that
their ability to calculate area and perimeter is correct)

By the end of Wednesday, students should have completed their house layout.

Should they finish earlier, they can move into Thursday’s activity.

THURSDAY

Students will be given an array of catalogues and a budget to ‘furnish’ their house.

The workout sheet and chosen items will be pasted onto an A3 sheet to be combined with their
design, and showcased on the wall.
