Arc Eliminator

The Arc Eliminator is an innovative design of an extremely fast acting switch, grounding all phases within 5 ms after occurrence of an open arc in the switchgear. The very fast operation means not only that the thermal damages by the extreme heat of the arc is totally omitted, but also that the pressure increase due to heating of the air (or other insulation gas) is drastically reduced. A conventional arc light detector triggers the operation. After an operation recharging is done electrically. The Arc Eliminator fulfils the demands for a 40 kA fault at 24 kV. It has been developed to be a standard component for ABB switchgear, and only having the same dimensions as a standard 24 kV insulator. It is also possible to use it for increasing the personnel safety and reliability of other switchgear, including non-arc proof ones in service. An open arc in a switchgear is a severe event, normally destroying the eguipment totally. The Arc Eliminator brings an important value to the customer by an extremely short time for the switchgear to be taken back into service again after an arc fault. This gives important savings in repair cost and down time. Due to the limitation in pressure increase, no pressure relief system is necessary, which simplifies the design and reduces the cost for both switchgear and buildings.

The Arc Eliminator mounted as busbar-support insulator in AX1 switchgear.

0 ms An arc occurs.

1 ms The arc is detected by the Arc Eliminator.

2 ms A trig signal is sent to the Arc Eliminator which starts to operate.

5 ms All phases are closed to earth potential and the arc is eliminated. The fault is cleared by the up-stream breaker.
