maintain the BBU3806 at its front.
The BBU3806 has the following internal components:
z

Power board

HBBU board

Transfer board

Backplane

Fans

GPS card

Extension plugboard

3.4.1 Power Board

The power board leads the external +24 V DC or 48 V DC power into the BBU3806,
and then converts the input power to +3.3 V DC power.
The power board supplies power to the HSDPA Baseband Unit (HBBU), transfer board,
and extension plugboard.

3.4.2 HBBU
The HBBU is the main processing board of the BBU3806.
The HBBU has the following functions:
z

Processing baseband signals

Processing data over the related interfaces

Controlling the clock and the other boards

3.4.3 Transfer Board

The transfer board can be configured with one GPS card. Then the board can supply
power to the GPS card and the GPS antenna, and can transfer the controlling signals
and clock signals of the GPS card to the HBBU.
Huawei Technologies Proprietary
3-2

DBS3800 Hardware Description

Chapter 3 BBU3806

The board can also supply power to the fans, provide fan monitoring ports for the HBBU,
control the fans, and protect the circuits.

3.4.4 Backplane
The backplane is mounted on the HBBU, and it connects the HBBU to the extension
plugboard for signal interconnection.

3.4.5 Fans
The BBU3806 has four fans that cool the BBU3806. The fans are controlled by the
HBBU.

3.4.6 GPS Card

The GPS card processes external GPS signals and transmits them to the HBBU.
The GPS card is optional.

3.4.7 Extension Plugboards

An extension plugboard is used to expand the capacity of the HBBU.
In practice, there may be other requirements for the BBU3806 such as capacity
expansion, extended types of service, and additional transmission modes (STM-1 and
E3/T3).
When a single HBBU cannot meet the requirements, you must use the extension
plugboard that may vary according to the requirements.
Extension plugboards are of two types:
z

Baseband extension plugboard: expends the processing capability of the HBBU.

Transport extension plugboard: enlarges the number of transmission ports using

additional sub-boards.

The active BBU3806 provides clock signals and control signals for other BBU3806s.
When there is only one BBU3806, it is still set to active.

The standby BBU3806 receives clock signals and switchover signals from the active
BBU3806. Both BBU3806s form a baseband resource pool. If the active BBU3806
fails, a standby one replaces it and becomes active.

The active and standby BBU3806s are connected through Ela connectors.

The extended BBU3806 mainly processes services. It forms a baseband resource

pool with the active or the standby BBU3806 through EIb connectors.

5.3 Functions
The RRU3801C is a remote radio unit of the distributed NodeB system.
The RRU3801C has the following functions:
z

Receiving RF signals from the antenna and feeder system, down-converting the
signals to Intermediate Frequency (IF) signals, and then transmitting them to the
BBU or the macro NodeB after amplification, analog-to-digital conversion, digital
down-conversion, matched filtering, and Digital Automatic Gain Control (DAGC)

Receiving downlink (DL) baseband signals from the BBU or the macro NodeB,
forwarding data from its cascaded RRU3801C, performing filtering and
digital-to-analog conversion, and up-converting RF signals to the transmitting
frequency band

Multiplexing receive (RX) and transmit (TX) signals over RF channels and filtering
the RX signals and TX signals
This enables the RX signals and TX signals to share the same antenna path.

5.4 Components
The RRU3801C is an integrated module.

5.4.1 Power Unit

The power unit leads the external 220 V AC power or 48 V DC power into the
RRU3801C.

5.4.2 RF Front End Filter

The RF front end filter is between the RRU3801C and the antenna. It filters the RX
signals and TX signals to avoid interference.

5.4.3 LNA
The LNA amplifies the RX signals to avoid loss of signals.

5.4.4 Power Amplifier

The Power Amplifier (PA) amplifies TX signals to enhance the power of the signals. The
power of the PA can be 20 W or 40 W, depending on the model of the RRU3801C.

5.4.5 TRX
The TRX of the 20 W RRU3801C is MTRX, and that of the 40 W RRU3801C is RTRX.
The Multi-Carrier Transceiver (MTRX) has two RX channels and one TX channel.
Each channel supports two carriers. The MTRX converts RX signals and TX signals to
CPRI signals.

5.4.6 Interface Board

Only the 20 W RRU3801C has an interface board that transmits CPRI signals.

75-ohm E1 coaxial cable

120-ohm E1 twisted pair cable

100-ohm T1 twisted pair cable

110-ohm J1 twisted pair cable

Note:
In practice, the BBU3806 uses the 120-ohm E1 twisted pair cable, but not the 100-ohm
T1 or 110-ohm J1 twisted pair cable.

The E1 coaxial cable and the E1 twisted pair cables have similar appearances. The X1
ends of the cables use the same type of connector, but the other ends use different
types of connector.
As shown in Figure 10-11, the 75-ohm E1 coaxial cable has two branches labeled W1
and W2.

12.10 Optical Cable

The optical cable connects the RRU3801C to the BBU.
z

For details about the optical cable and its connections between the RRU3801C
and the BBU3806, refer to section 10.15 "Optical Cable."

For details about the optical cable and its connections between the RRU3801C
and the BBU3806C, refer to section 11.10 "CPRI Optical Cable."

12.11 High Speed CPRI Signal Cable

When the distance between the BBU and the RRU3801C is shorter than 3 m, you can
connect the BBU to the RRU3801C through a high speed CPRI signal cable. For details,
refer to section 10.16 "High Speed CPRI Signal Cable."

12.12 RF Cable
12.12.1 Functions
The RF cables to the RRU3801C are of two types:
z

Feeder jumper
The jumper transmits and receives RF signals.

Interconnect jumper
The jumper receives RF signals from divided links when two RRU3801Cs work in
RX diversity mode. The jumper is used by the RRU3801C only in 1 x 2
configuration.

12.12.2 Appearance
Both ends of the feeder jumper are DIN connectors. Jumpers of different length are
selected as follows:
z

When the distance between the RRU3801C and the antenna is shorter than 14 m,
select the feeder jumper with indefinite length. You need to make the connectors
on site. The RRU3801C is directly connected to the antenna through the feeder
jumper.

When the distance between the RRU3801C and the antenna is longer than 14 m,
select the feeder jumper with indefinite length. You need to make the connectors
on site with the length less than 2 m. Ensure that you connect the jumper to the
feeder before you connect the jumper to the RRU3801C and the antenna.
If you prepare the jumper by yourself, it is suggested that the maximum length of
the jumper is 2 m.
