Excel and Minitab data files are provided on this CD. Files can either be instal led from the Install page to the computer hard drive or other disk, or opened di rectly from the CD as mentioned in the Browse section above. The CD icons that a ppear throughout the text identify these files. When you see this icon in the te xt, you should normally retrieve the similarly named file in either Excel or Mi nitab on this CD. Most likely, you will be using files in the Excel or Minitab folder on a regular basis. You can retrieve those files directly from the CD-ROM or copy them first to a hard disk folder. If you plan to copy the files to a hard disk folder, fir st make sure that your hard disk has 10MB of free space. When you copy the files , the files will likely have read-only status. (Due to the nature of the CD-ROM medium, CD-ROM files are always read-only and cannot be changed to read-write st atus while on the CD.) While this status is not a problem in Microsoft Excel readonly files can always be saved under different name by selecting the File| Save As command you can change the status of the files to read-write by doing the follo wing: 1. Open Windows Explorer to the hard disk folder containing the files. 2. Select the files to make read-write. (Select Edit | Select All to select ever y file in list.) 3. Select Files | Properties and in the Properties dialog box that appears, dese lect (uncheck) the Read-only attribute check box and click the OK button. For information about MINITAB, visit http://www.minitab.com. --TREEPLAN DECISION TREE ADD-IN TreePlan for Excel helps you build a decision tree diagram in an Excel worksheet using dialog boxes. Decision trees are useful for analyzing sequential decision problems under uncertainty. Your decision tree model may include various contro llable alternatives (e.g., whether to introduce a new product, whether to bid on a new project) and uncontrollable uncertainties (e.g., possible demand for a pr oduct, whether you're awarded a contract), arranged in chronological order. Tree Plan automatically includes formulas for summing cash flows to obtain outcome va lues and for calculating rollback values for determining optimal strategy. To use TreePlan, you (1) open a new worksheet, (2) choose Tools | Decision Tree from Excel's menu, (3) select a node to change the structure of your decision tree, (4) enter branch names, cash flows, and probabilities, and (5) determine the optimal strategy from TreePlan's results Visit TreePlan's site on the Internet at http://www.treeplan.com for additional information about using this Excel add-in. ********************************** V.
