EDUCATION OUTREACH 2013 SUMMER CAMPS


Architectural Discovery (Grades 2-4) $275 In these half-day sessions younger students will discover various aspects of architecture. Students will explore architecture based activities and projects designed to promote creativity and imagination. They will learn about patterns in nature and make an abstract art piece inspired by Wrights stained glass. They will design and construct a textile block based on the concrete blocks Wright designed in 1923. He later used concrete blocks for the Usonian Automatic home system conceived of as a way to make great architecture aordable for ordinary people. Limit 12 students per session. Camp Sessions: June 1014, 14pm; July 15, 9am12pm Photographing Wright (Grades 7-12) $250 Frank Lloyd Wright was not only a marvel in the world of architecture; he was a revolutionary, creating harmony between the natural landscape and man-made structures. Natural shapes, colors and forms in the Sonoran Desert inuenced several of the key features that uniquely dene Taliesin West. Local Arizona photographer, Andrew Pielage, will guide students on a weeklong photographic journey through Taliesin West and the surrounding desert. Students begin with a brief desert walk to discover and photograph Wrights inspiration. Later they will photograph architectural elements that reect the desert. Images will be examined and discussed during the week. Learning the rules of composition, how to frame an image, and consideration of light and shadow will help participants continue to grow in their creativity and skill at photography. Students must provide their own fully manual camera and USB cord. Limit 8 students per session. Camp Sessions: June 1014, 8am12pm; June 2428, 8am12pm; July 1519, 8am12pm; July 29Aug 2, 8am12pm Design Your Dream Space Full Day (Grades 512) $400 Architecture combines art, math, science, language, and new technology, to create innovative spaces in which to live, learn, and work. This class is an immersion into the world of what an architect really does. Students discover the roles of client, designer, and builder as they take an initial concept through the stages to a nished project. They select a site and draw a two dimensional oor plan to scale. Students develop a color scheme, design furniture, and construct a furnished and landscaped three dimensional model of a compact dream home. Environmental needs and sustainability are discussed. The educational atmosphere is supportive and relaxed. Each child works at her/his own level, inspiring individual curiosity, discovery, and imagination. Full day sessions include lunch. Limit 30 students per session. Camp Sessions: June 1721, 9am3pm June 2428, 9am3pm, Grades 56 only July 1519, 9am3pm August 59, 9am3pm Design Your Dream Space Half Day (Grades 24) $275 Limit 12 students per session. Camp Sessions: July 2226, 9am12pm Wright for the Future (Grades 5-12) $400 We live in a world where communication is almost instantaneous. The Internet has made our world feel much smaller than ever before. News events can travel around the globe in a matter of minutes. Distant cultures and countries are part of our daily television and online viewing. In this project students grapple with some real world challenges: global warming, pollution, new trends in energy and communication technologies, advancements in construction methods, and new modes of transportation as they plan and design an ideal city set 100 years in the future. Creativity and ingenuity are required to solve the architectural challenges of the 21st century. Individuals research exciting, newly constructed concept buildings and cutting edge architects. The team collaborates on construction of a site map, models of the wide variety of structures required in a city, and decides on a city name. Each camper builds smaller models of these large structures, turning ideas into a three dimensional reality. Limit 25 students per session. Full day sessions include lunch. Unless otherwise noted all materials are included. There is a 5 student minimum for all camps to run. Registration closes 3 days before each session begins. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundations Education Outreach Program (EOP) oers students a living experience of Frank Lloyd Wrights body of work. The EOP provides interdisciplinary enrichment opportunities for students K12 and adults with a focus on Frank Lloyd Wright, architecture, and the arts. The EOP oers fall and spring weekend classes as well as week-long summer camps at Taliesin West in Scottsdale, AZ. In addition, the EOP is an educational resource and educators are encouraged to contact the EOP to schedule school eld trips, seek creative material, classroom presentations, and project planning assistance throughout the year. New this year is the EOPs Wright Design program. Wright Design is a distance learning program that enables students to learn about architecture and experience Taliesin West without ever leaving their classrooms. The program, which is a partnership with Paradise Valley Unied School District, is comprised of live broadcasts from Taliesin West and in-class work. Each week, students will watch dierent interviews with Foundation Fellows, architects and experts, along with footage of Taliesin West in real-time. The students also participate in a live question and answer segment. After that, in-class instructors facilitate related activities and exercises.
