Biography

Full name: Semen Osipovi Portugejs; pseudonym: Stepan Ivanovi; born in Kiinev, Bessarabia, Russia 1880, died in Long Island, USA 1944; social democrat and, first of all, writer; Menshevik since the split of 1903; took part in the so-called legal labour movement; defensist during the First World War; left Russia in 1922; right hand of Aleksandr Potresov; editor of Zarja 1922-1925 and virtual editor of Zapiski Social-demokrata 1931-1934.
