How to connect a machine to a Lantronix SLC Console Server

These notes describe how to connect a machine to a Lantronix SLC unit so that its console can be accessed using the School's conserver infrastructure.

1. Cabling
A machine's serial port should be connected to the next available device port of the appropriate SLC using a standard TP cable. You must use the appropriate RJ45<->DB9F adaptor at the machine end to make this connection: the Lantronix part number for the required adaptor is 200.2070A, and its pinout is documented on p233 of the SecureLinx Console Manager User Guide. Such adaptors are available in the Forum server room: we have some 'official' Lantronix adaptors (coloured grey, and labelled '200.2070A'), and also some adaptors which have been made in-house by our technicians: these are coloured green, in order to distinguish them from other 'in-house' adaptors which have been used here for console access in the past. Note that, by default, all incoming serial connections on the SLC are expected to run at 9600,8,n,1. The use of different baud rates etc. is strongly discouraged, but, if necessary, can be accommodated by appropriate reconfiguration of the SLC's device port(s): see How to set up a Lantronix SLC Console Server . The Dothill Evolution SAN boxes require a DB9M adapter, see LantronixEvolutionConfiguration for details.

2. Setting LCFG resources

Consoles managed via Lantronix SLC console server are fully integrated within the School's conserver set-up, so a 'new' target console should be added in the usual way. Namely, edit the live header live/console_server.h and add the target machine's name to the appropriate resource: Example: The serial console of machine dunlin has been attached to device port 05 of the Lantronix SLC console server

srslc00; add the following to live/console_server.h : conserver.consolename_srslc00p05 dunlin

3. Using the console

Consoles managed via Lantronix SLC units are fully integrated within the School's conserver set-up, so access to both the console - and its logs - works in exactly the same way as for consoles managed via direct serial tty connections: To access the console: 1. ssh to any of the School's console servers. 2. Issue the command console <target machine name>, and proceed as usual. In particular, note that a SysRq break is sent to the target machine using the sequence Ctrl-] Ctrl-] l 0 (that's lower-case L, followed by a zero). To access the console logs: 1. ssh to the console server which manages the Lantronix SLC unit in question (the appropriate console server to ssh to will be indicated by comments in the live/console_server.h file). 2. cd /var/consoles - the log file(s) correspond to the target machine's name.

4. Further information
1. More information on the console command and the School's conserver set-up can be found in the local guide to using (ssh)console and conserver. 2. Information about conserver itself can be found at the conserver website. -- IanDurkacz - 01 Nov 2007
