41 Cooper Square, Morphosis

The building reverberates with light, shadow and transparency via a high performance exterior double skin whose semi-transparent layer of perforated stainless steel wraps the building's glazed envelope to provide critical interior environmental control, while also allowing for transparencies to reveal the creative activity occurring within.

0-14 Tower, Dubai

The building was designed for Dubais Business Bay and features 22 floors covered in a double skin facade. That is, outermost skin is constructed from 40c, thick perforated concrete. The one meter space between the skins creates a chimney effect, cooling the building.

Designed for a very wealthy client, the glass structure is encapsulated with a circular cut-out skin. Resembling port holes, the heavy concrete faade filters light into the glass interior, while also reflecting the lake, mountains and greenery of the site. The outside skin creates privacy for the interior, while also blocking the suns rays and reducing solar heat gain. In the winter, it helps hold in hot air, keeping the interior nice and toasty. Tehran Stock Exchange Proposal

The second prize winning proposal for the Tehran Stock Exchange, designed by Hadi Teherani Office +Design Core [4S], is a two-part structure enveloped with a double-skin faade that has a lacey appearance of the traditional Iranian architecture. The 66-meter high building is based on the historic Iranian wind-catcher structures that act as natural cooling systems.

The facade is designed as a double skin, where the inner layer is a curtain wall with triple insulating glazing with sun blinds on the outside. The glass proportion is max 70% in order to reduce the heat penetration to a minimum. The second layer is another curtain-wall, comprised of perforated metal plate elements. Thanks to the various sizes of perforation holes, from a distance the superimposed figures of a sample Iranian traditional motif are recognizable. The cleaning of the faade is effected via a 60 cm maintenance catwalk in the interim space between the double layers. This pixel faade lends the building a special character. The faade changes when observed from different angles and from a specific distance the image becomes even sharper. http://www.evolo.us/architecture/tehran-stock-exchange-proposal-hadi-teherani-office-design-core-4s/

The Westarkade, West Arcade building of the Frankfurt KfW Banking Group
is one of the first office sky-rises in the world requiring just 98 kilowatt hours per sq. meter to operate.

Compression ring facade: The double skin facade of the Westarkade is built as a compression ring in order to balance the wind forces at the windows.

Facade modules: Tilt and turn windows with insulated glazing. The windows are planned by the architects of sauerbruch hutton and manufactured by Wicona.

Piraeus Tower, Athens. The existing structure of the tower is used as a canvas for the emplacement of two different kinds of double skin facade. The skin is used as a means of expressing the function of the interior. The perforated facade covers the workspace area i.e. 60% of each floor, while the glass double facade covers the common spaces (approximately 20% of the floor plan). Two basic types of plan rotated and mirrored provide the variations that result to the towers new facade design.

Harold Wood, House & Housing, India This residential scheme in Kolkata, India, for Tata Steel and Bengal Shrachi draws equally on the local tradition of open, expressive architecture and global advances in building technology. A delicate veil of steel unites cutting edge environmental systems and modular technology with a uniquely Indian identity. SymHouse Mk1 extended [Piercy&Company's] proven track record of innovative housing design, however, their proposal went one stage further with an ingenious spatial strategy. By proposing a conditioned inner core set within a peripheral layer of more responsive inside /outside spaces, this scheme satisfied not only the environmental aspirations of the brief, allowing both natures to successfully co-exist, but also the social aspirations.

The use of steel for this project was influenced by the high levels of humidity that the area experiences, which can cause structures made from less robust materials to deteriorate and decay quickly. Steels imperviousness to moisture means that it will not shrink or swell, and exposed areas can be galvanised or treated to reduce corrosion. Aimed at the growing market of high-income professionals, the apartments retain the aspirational qualities of light and space that steel and glass structures offer, while combatting the issues posed by the harsh sunlight, providing a comfortable and luxurious living environment. H Arquitectes' Triangular House
The perforated brick faade may enhance the geometric homes faade, but they also boast an advantage over regular bricks. Behind the perforated faade sits an air chamber that increases natural ventilation and circulation inside the structure. The perforations also help channel rain, allowing it to naturally drain off the faade and into built-in cavities.

Orange Cube in Lyon

Perforations large and small give the Orange Cube in Lyon its distinctive personality. Designed by Paris-based practice Jakob + Macfarlane as a design showroom and office complex, its coloured metal mesh faade is covered in an irregular pattern of perforations and is dramatically punctured by two large openings. Visually, the perforated surface references the dappled effect of light reflecting on the surface of the nearby river, while its russet hue is inspired by the harbour-side location. The functional performance of the patterned faade is achieved by careful research into optimal light levels and thermal performance. Umimirai Library by Coelacanth K&H Architects, JAPAN

The Lofts at Cherokee Studios At Cherokee the main architectural feature of this project is the buildings owner-controlled operable double faade system. The perforated anodized aluminum panels of the building creates an ever- changing screen that sparkles in the sun and glows at night, while simultaneously providing shade to cool the building, reducing noise, enhancing privacy, and still allowing for spectacular views, great natural light and ventilation from ocean breezes which pass through its millions of perforations even when all panels are closed. The material reappears as a strategic arrangement of screens on the east, west and south-facing walls, lending a subtle rhythm to the exterior circulation. South-facing screen walls filter direct sunlight that lends unexpected visual depth while creating a sense of security for the occupants. strategies include: locating and orienting the building to control solar cooling loads; shaping and orienting the building for exposure to prevailing winds; shaping the building to induce buoyancy for natural ventilation; designing windows to maximize day lighting; shading south facing windows and minimizing west-facing glazing; designing windows to maximize natural ventilation
