SOUNDAFFECTS: THE SOUND AND COLOUR OF THE CITY

Parsons - The New School for Design recently collaborated with the product design company Tellart and mono to install a multimedia installation called "SoundAffects" in Manhattan's Fifth Avenue. "SoundAffects" plays the daily street activity in musical form on a wall and visually on the internet. The wall features multiple sensors, with each one assigned its own sound and colour. The city's noises, movement and temperature are recorded and then converted into music and colours to create the sound and visuals of the city. Earphones in the wall enable passers-by to listen to the new sounds in real time.

EARNING POINTS BY SAVING WATER

"Banco Cyan" is a Brazilian initiative resulting from a partnership between the beverage brand American Beverage and the Brazilian state-owned water utility Sabesp. Modelled on a bank account, it awards points to people if they manage their water consumption more efficiently. The more people can stay below their average consumption levels, which is monitored by "Banco Cyan", the more eco-credits they can earn. The points accumulated can be redeemed for discounts at numerous participating partners. This helps consumers not just save on water, but also in their private expenditures.

TOUCHSCREEN GAMES FOR CATS

Friskies, a pet food brand from Nestl, has launched three new iPad games made just for cats. "Cat Fishing", "Tasty Treasures Hunt" and "Party Mix-up" are the names of the cat-food inspired games for our four-legged friends. The games are quite similar to each other: the cat paws a moving object, which then changes or disappears and then appears again. The iPad screen is, according to Friskies, not susceptible to scratching. However, for those who think their iPad is too good for that, the web applications are also available for Android devices.

HANDPAINTED OUTDOOR WORK

The advertising agency Uncle Grey recently carried out a campaign on behalf of the Danish porcelain manufacturer Royal Copenhagen, in which artists were hoisted up to a huge canvas hung on the front of a large shopping centre to paint the print of a porcelain plate. The idea was to show how much time, effort and skill goes into making one of these products. The campaign was also intended to highlight the fact that work carried out by hand costs more than mass-produced goods. The event was witnessed by approx. 40,000 people and sales of Royal Copenhagen porcelain rose threefold.

INTERACTIVE FILM IN GOOGLE CHROME

3 Dreams of Black is a new interactive film directed by Chris Milk for the musicians Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi, and shows off the possibilities of Html5, Canvas and WebGL. This experiment was programmed for Google's Chrome browser and features three dreams as interactive 2D and 3D animations, as well as a real film. At the end of the film, the user can create objects directly in the browser which appear in the following animations. The graphics are generated live and the user can change the perspective by clicking on the mouse. Using the WebGL app makes it possible to create sophisticated graphics without any additional plug-ins.

OPERATING THE PHONE ON YOUR HAND

Researchers at the Hasso-Plattner-Institute in Germany have developed a method that enables smartphone users to replace the touchscreen with the palm of their own hands. "Imaginary Phone" turns certain movements that users make on their hands into commands for the phone. These movements are captured by a depth-sensitive camera attached to the clothes. A software program analyses them and transfers them wirelessly as commands to the phone in the user's pocket. This allows people to leave the phone in their pocket even when accepting a call.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research (ISC) in Germany have developed stretch and pressure sensors that can expand to twice their original length. They are placed on a highly stretchable elastomeric film, coated on both sides with flexible electrodes. When the sensor is stretched, such as in a car seat, its thickness and electrical capacitance also change, which can be measured. These sensors could be integrated into sports clothes to analyse sequences of movement or optimize safety systems.

SMART CONTAINERS MAKE TRANSPORT EASIER

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics in Germany are working on intelligent transport containers called "SmartULDs". These containers have been fitted with software agents that ensure that the goods reach their destinations more quickly. Builtin programs also enable them to detect whether the right goods have been loaded. In the event of incorrect loading, an integrated network of sensors emits an alarm and organises reloading onto other planes.
