About Us
History
As portrayed in our mission statement the principal business of Andor is the development and manufacture of high performance digital cameras. Further we look to share our expertise to develop the best solutions for your light measuring problems. Our products are distributed to a customer base encompassing both the scientific research and industrial communities. The largest Andor facility is based in Belfast, Northern Ireland which is a new, Andor Headquarters, Belfast purpose-built 50,000sq. ft premises. The premises include state of the art optical, electronic and mechanical workshops, a 3,000sq. ft class 10,000 clean room, vacuum and electronic processing facilities. We employ over 180 staff and distribute our products to customers in over 40 countries, either using our own worldwide sales force, or through a network of independent distributors. Our portfolio of over 400 products and accessories continues to increase understanding in fields as diverse as drug discovery, toxicology analysis, medical diagnosis, food quality testing and defense. The founders of Andor were working in the Physics department of Queen's University, Belfast, but found the cameras then available were inadequate for their demanding applications, so they developed their own. After using them in various imaging and spectroscopic applications they found they were being requested by researchers in other universities. Andor was formed in 1989 to take advantage of these requirements. The company has grown organically and is today the fastest growing company manufacturing high performance digital cameras. Along the way we have pioneered the development of high performance cameras.

Pioneering EMCCD Technology

EMCCD technology, sometimes known as on-chip multiplication, is an innovation first introduced to the digital scientific imaging community by Andor Technology in 2001, with the launch of our dedicated, high-end iXon platform of ultra-sensitive cameras. Essentially, the EMCCD is an image sensor that is capable of detecting single photon events without an image intensifier, achievable by way of a unique electron multiplying structure built into the chip. Andor has more EMCCD cameras in the field than any other provider and in 2005 introduced the worlds first EMCCD spectroscopy camera, the Andor Newton. Applications for EMCCDs include live cell imaging, low light surveillance, weak Raman signals and nanotechnology research. Just recently Andor has launched the Luca family of price performance EMCCD cameras, offering speed and sensitivity at extremely affordable prices.

Research Focus
Andor has provided digital camera solutions into many of the worlds leading academic and research establishments over the last two decades. Our range of world beating imaging and spectroscopy cameras are used across the spectrum of scientific disciplines including Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Astromony. Applications include Raman, NIR, LIBS, Bose-Einstein, Live Cell Imaging, X-Ray, Adaptive Optics and 4/5-D Microscopy.

OEM / Instrumentation Capability

Andor is dedicated to providing commercial organizations and OEMs with innovative, advanced and versatile CCD, EMCCD and ICCD detectors and spectrographs. With years of academic and industrial experience, Andor now provides cameras to nine of the top twenty analytical instrumentation companies around the world. Our OEM experts specialize in the creation of complete system solutions, from tailored collection optics and spectrographs to software that gives you the levels of control and functionality you require - whether you are creating a brand new analytical device, or incorporating new functionality into an existing configuration. Andor is commited to continuous improvement and have installed Lean Manufacturing principles across the whole business, the focus being to eiminate waste from every process. Particular success in driving out waste, leading to significant reductions in lead-times, has been achieved in the manufacturing process using Kaizen and Value Stream Mapping.
