Traditional drama clubs, the-
ater productions and choirs have
existed in high school culture for
decades. Popular sports always
garner much attention.
However, there is a fresh tradi-
tion making its way to the fore-
front of extracurricular agendas
at Eastern High School. As the
premier South Jersey high school
to host this activity for students,
Eastern has introduced its own
chapter of Team Theatre to com-
pete in the New Jersey Drama
and Forensics League.
As stated by the NJDFL web-
site, Everyone knows what
drama is, but for most people

speaking and formal debate; ar-
gumentation.
If you think about it, studying
the breakdown of language and
how we use it to solve the puzzle
of communicating with each
other is very similar to what
crime investigators do.
For the above reasons, the
NJDFL focuses on competitive
categories such as speaking, im-
promptu, poetry, acting and dra-
matic monologue.
Unlike any other extracurricu-
lar activity, the NJDFL Team The-
atre program seeks to foster a
competitive and creative outlet
for high school students in the
areas of spoken word, comedy
and other artistic categories vir-
tually ignored in many schools.
The NJDFL also creates a plat-
form for students to network with
other students, while providing a
forum for constructive feedback
from judges.
As explained by Eastern High
School Team Theatre coach Liz
O'Keefe, the NJDFL as a whole is
comprised of schools from all
over the state that host competi-
tions in all categories previously
mentioned, and more. An NJDFL
tournament usually consists of
12 events.
There are typically six theatre
events and six public speaking
events. There are two rounds of
total competition.
One round is always set in the
morning and one in the after-
noon.
Judges tally the scores for all
rounds. The five best entries in
each event perform one more
time in a finals round. At the end
of a standard competition day,
awards are given for the top five
student competitors in each cate-
gory.
The schools with the most
points win sweepstakes trophies
for their team. Any student who
makes it to the finals in any tour-
nament is invited to compete at
the end of the season in the state
championship tournament.

A
tlantic City has been a hub of
economic development for
New Jersey since the 1970s.
The citys casinos have long been the
states defining attraction to out-of-
state guests, even more so than its ex-
pansive beaches, which are a huge
summertime draw.
AC has been a focal point of develop-
ment, tourism and marketing, and has
generously repaid the favor in the
form of revenue and taxes to the state.
But a disturbing trend that began al-
most 10 years ago continues today: Peo-
ple are spending less and less money at
Atlantic City casinos every day.
The Center for Gaming Research at
UNLV reports that, since 2006, total
revenue at Atlantic City casinos has
dropped a whopping 45 percent. Casi-
nos brought in $2.9 billion last year,
down from $3.1 billion in 2012 the sev-
enth straight year that revenue num-
bers were down from the year before.
In the wake of surrounding states
approving expanded gambling offer-
ings at racetracks and standalone casi-
nos, New Jersey no longer has the East
Coast monopoly on gambling that it
had even 10 years ago. No longer do
gamblers have to choose between New
Jersey, Las Vegas and, to a small de-
gree, Connecticut; they can now stay
closer to home in Pennsylvania,
Delaware and even Maryland to place
a bet.
Gov. Christie and other legislators
have recognized this alarming trend
and have focused their efforts on alter-
native forms of gambling to pump fuel
into Atlantic Citys fire. Online gam-
bling began Nov. 21 with casinos re-
porting $8.4 million in related revenue
since that time and the push for le-
galized sports betting continues.
But other surrounding states are al-
ready following suit in their own push
for online gambling, and New Jerseys
case for legalizing sports gambling in
the state doesnt look promising.
So it seems about time to look else-
where outside of gambling as a fu-
ture source of significant revenue for
the state.
If Atlantic City casinos continue to
lose revenue, and if online gambling
doesnt make up those losses, then the
state as a whole will suffer.
What else is out there? What else is
available? What else can attract
tourists all year round?
It might not be possible to answer
these questions now, but lawmakers
need to recognize the need to come up
with a revenue solution soon. Our
states long-term economic health
could depend upon it.
in our opinion
A gambling alternative?
New Jersey needs to find a new source of revenue, not a new form of gambling
Your thoughts
Should New Jerseys tourism industry
continue to rely so heavily on gambling?
Or should the state search for alternative
revenue? Share your thoughts on
the subject, and others, through a letter
to the editor.

The new year al-

ready brought us
ice, snow and the
Polar Vortex, but
some computer
models are predict-
ing the worst of
what this winter
has to offer is still
to come. To help
you and year fam-
ily battle the cold, the Camden
County Department of Health
and Human Services and the Of-
fice of Emergency Management
have put together some useful
tips.
Dress in layers and
cover your exposed skin to avoid
frostbite.
It only takes 30 to 45
minutes for exposed skin to de-
velop frostbite
Mittens keep childrens
hands warmer than gloves.
Avoid wearing cotton, it
holds in moisture and loses its
insulating properties.
Remember that even
clear-looking sidewalks can be
slippery.
Keep dog walks brief,
dont leave animals outside and
consider a dog coat.
Please check on your
neighbors, especially those that
are elderly, disabled or live alone.
Using your ceiling fan
clockwise on low recirculates
warm air through the room.
Never use a stove, oven
or a gas grill to heat your home.
Use space heaters safely
on a level, hard surface and keep
anything flammable at least
three feet away. Turn off space
heaters before going to bed.
Wood -burning fire-
places should have a glass or
metal screen large enough to
catch sparks or rolling logs.
Never leave children alone in the
room when a fire is lit. Keep all
flammable items at least three
feet away from the
fireplace. Always
make sure fire-
place embers are
out before leaving
the room or going
to bed.
Keep your
thermostat at the
same temperature
day and night. Your
heating bill may be a little higher,
but you could avoid the costly re-
pair of pipes that freeze and
burst.
To prevent pipes from
freezing, run water, even at a
trickle. Open the kitchen and
bathroom cabinet doors to allow
warmer air to circulate around
the plumbing, but be sure to
move any harmful cleaners and
household chemicals out of the
reach of children. Keep garage
doors closed if there are water
lines in the garage.
In order to conserve
electricity, turn off lights and ap-
pliances that you do not need or
are not using.
At night, cover win-
dows with drapes or blankets to
minimize heat loss. During the
day, open blinds to let sun warm
the space.
Always use caution when
heading outdoors during the
dangerous cold. If possible, stay
indoors and out of the elements.
If you must go out, please take
precautions to keep you and your
family safe and warm this win-
ter.

ALASKA 2014
CRUISEFEST
If you are planning an Alaska Cruise
Vacation in Summer of 2014, this is the
one event you do not want to miss!
ALASKA 2014 CRUISEFEST
the Voorhees Township website,
www.voorheesnj.com. When you
check out, present your Shop
Voorhees Property Tax Reward
Program card. The retailer will
swipe your card and a percentage
of your purchase will be applied
to reduce your property tax bill.
Each business will independently
establish the percentage of your
purchase that will be applied to-
ward your taxes. Its that easy.
Cards were distributed to resi-
dents by mail in October. If you
have not already done so, register
your card to have your benefits
applied. You can register your
card online at www.propertytax-
card.com or
www.voorheesnj.com. You will
need your Shop Voorhees card as
well as your property block and
lot number available. This is how
your shopping benefits will be
recognized to be credited. If you
reside in an apartment, your ad-
dress will be the recognizing fac-
tor for receiving a check at the
end of the tax year. Everyone can
participate as long as you sign up
with your card and you live in
Voorhees!
For more information, contact
Michael Marchitto Jr., Voorhees
Township economic development
director, at 316-0473.
Save money while helping our
community businesses thrive.

parents must know about drug
prevention, before its too late.
The presentation will be held at
the Eastern Regional High School
auditorium on Thursday, Jan. 23
