Describe the different mode of operation of a thyristor with the help of its static V-I characteristics. Draw the turn off characteristics of an SCR and explain the mechanism of turn off. Explain class B commutation circuit with relevant circuit diagram and waveforms. Why SCRs are required to be connected in parallel? What are the problems associated with parallel connection of SCRs? How they are eliminated? Explain the operation of a single phase half controlled bridge converter with resistive load with associated waveforms. A single phase semi-converter delivers power to RLE load with R = 5 , L = 10 mH and E = 80 V. The a.c supply voltage is 230 V, 50 Hz. For the continuous conduction, find the average value of output current for a firing angle of 50 . If one of the main SCRs is damaged and open circuited find the new value of average output current on the assumption of continuous conduction. Describe the operation of single phase two pulse midpoint converter with relevant voltage and current waveforms for an inductive load. A single phase full converter fed from 220 volt, 50 Hz supply gives an output voltage of 180 volt at no load. When loaded with a constant outpour current of 10 amp, the overlap angle is found to be 6 . Calculate the value of source inductance. Explain the operation of a three phase fully controlled bridge converter with inductive load with associated waveforms. Explain in detail the operation of dual converter with circulating current. List the advantages and disadvantages of the same scheme. A single phase voltage controller has the following data source voltage = 230 V at 50 Hz, Load = (0 + j4) . Calculate: (i) The control range of firing angle. (ii) The maximum value of RMS load current. (iii) The maximum valve of average and RMS thyristor current. With circuit diagram and waveform explain the principle of operation of a step down cycloconverter with inductive load. With the help of neat circuit diagram and waveform explain the operation of Jones chopper. For the ideal type-A chopper circuit, with R-L-E load, following operating conditions are given: Source voltage = 220 volt, chopping period = 1 mS, On period = 400 S, R = 1.5 , L = 6 mH, E = 44 volt. Calculate the following: (i) Check whether the load current is continuous. (ii) Average output current. (iii) Maximum and minimum values of steady state output current. Explain single and multiple PWM techniques in inverter Draw and explain the simple SCR series inverter circuit employing class-A commutation with associated waveforms. State the limitations of this series inverter.
