EARTHQUAKE IN BHUTAN
OVERALL SITUATION
The earthquake that struck Bhutan on Monday, 21 September 2009 measuring 6.1 caused damage to
infrastructure and loss of lives in nine districts in Bhutan. The government assessment has recorded 11
people killed (not 12 as reported in the Si t Rep yesterday) – 5 in Mongar, 2 in Trashigang and 4 in
Samdrup Jonghkar. 22 people have been reported injured and over 206 h ouses affected.

UN RESPONSE IN BHUTAN
On 22 September, the Bhutan United Nations Country Team met in the afternoon to review the situation; agree on the arrangement for dissemination of information;
discuss available resources from the UNCT (i.e. Agencies, Funds and Programmes and the Wo rld Bank) a) to support the Government’s needs assessment and b) to
provide relief/rehabilitation assistance, as may be required; and address UN staff awareness and preparedness issues linked t o the Security Plan. It was agreed that a
letter will be sent to the Minister of Home Affairs by the Resident Coordinator conveying the readiness of the UNCT to provide assistance. It was also agree d that the
Resident Coordinator will convene a meeting with all develop ment partners before the end of the week to share information and promote coordination .
