1 INTRODUCTION - See Figure 3 Spectramag is a two-channel 16-bit data acquisition unit which interfaces to the parallel printer port of the user's PC. Channel A is designed for the Mag-01MS single axis magnetic field sensor, while Channel B has a constant current ICP interface for a piezoelectric accelerometer for vibration measurements. The second channel can also be used with a suitable microphone preamplifier for sound measurements. This combination is ideal for site surveys and interference monitoring for MRI systems, electron microscopes and similar sensitive equipment. ICP is a registered trademark of PCB Piezotronics, Inc. The Mag-01MS100 single axis sensor, with a full-scale range of 100T (1Gauss) and a resolution down to a few nT, is recommended for magnetic measurements but higher field ranges are available. The Mag-01MS100 has a bandwidth of DC to 1kHz. The ICP interface provides a 4mA constant current source via a BNC connector and a gain of 1 or 1000 can be selected for vibration measurements down to a few g. The bandwidth of this channel is limited by the internal filters to be 2Hz to 10kHz. Software is provided for logging the slow variations in the environmental magnetic field and for spectrum analysis of a.c. magnetic fields up to 1kHz, determined by the Mag-01MS, and vibration up to tens of kHz. The system is ideal for recording the magnetic fields due to 50/60Hz mains supplies and associated harmonics. A peak spectral plot allows the system to run over long periods to capture transient events. The data acquisition unit incorporates a 16-bit A/D converter by Pico Technology Ltd and the software provided comprises the PicoScope and PicoLog virtual instrument software for Windows 3.x and Windows95/98/NT with full set-up and operating instructions. A suitable tripod is provided for horizontal and vertical orientation of the magnetic field sensor. A parallel interface cable and carrying case are also provided. The case will accommodate a suitable piezoelectric accelerometer for vibration measurement. This manual gives guidance on the use of the software and provides a useful tour of the menus and options available before giving the recommendations for the settings and procedures for taking measurements. IMPORTANT NOTE. The Spectramag unit should be connected to the parallel port of the computer and then powered up before starting the PicoScope or PicoLog programs. If power is removed from the Spectramag unit the program must be closed and re-started after power to the Spectramag unit is restored. Failure to comply with this procedure could result in false data being recorded.

2 SPECTRAMAG A/D CONVERTER - See Figure 2 The Spectramag unit contains a Pico Technology two-channel 16-bit A/D converter together with a 12V power supply for the magnetometer and constant current ICP interface for a piezoelectric vibration sensor. The unit has two input connectors, a 10way connector for the Mag-01MS input and a BNC connector for the constant current
OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 3 of 27

ICP interface. The Spectramag unit is connected to the parallel printer port of the user's computer and is powered by a stabilised 12V DC from a universal input mains adaptor. A 12V 4Ah Rechargeable Power Pack is also available from Bartington Instruments to operate the system for up to 8 hours.

3 Mag-01MS100 MAGNETIC FIELD SENSOR The Mag-01MS is a single axis fluxgate magnetic field sensor which is available with a full-scale range of 70, 100, 250, 500 or 1000T. The sensor can be used to measure magnetic fields in the frequency range of DC to 1kHz. The unit requires a supply of 12V, which is obtained from the Spectramag A/D converter, and provides 10V full scale to the converter. The Mag-01MS sensor is connected to the Spectramag A/D converter by a 5m cable. The sensor provides an output proportional to the magnetic field component in the direction of the axis marked on the enclosure. During measurements the sensor should be secured in the direction of interest using a firm base or the tripod supplied to maintain the sensor's direction constant relative to the ambient magnetic field. The sensor should be protected from high magnetic fields. The sensor may be exposed to fields up to ten times the full-scale range but above this level the zero-field offset error may increase by a few nT. For full details of the Mag-01MS sensor see the attached data sheet DS0042

4 TRIPOD - See Figure 1 The tripod is fitted with an adaptor to hold the Mag-01MS sensor in the horizontal or vertical plane. The tripod contains screws which are slightly magnetic. The top section of the tripod should therefore always be fully extended before starting measurements. The height can then be adjusted using the extending legs.

The latest version may be downloaded free of charge from the Internet at http://www.picotech.com. At the time of delivery the latest version will be supplied on CD-ROM as two executable files webpsw.exe and webplw.exe. When run, these self-expanding files will install the latest version of the software into the default directory C:\PICO. Small differences in the menus and options may be observed between the versions of the software but the principles will be the same.

8 SETTING UP Secure the Mag-01MS sensor to the tripod adaptor and fully extend the top section of the tripod. Adjust the height using the adjustable legs. Secure the vibration sensor to the floor according to the manufacturer's instructions. Connect up the complete system as shown in Figure 3 with the magnetometer connected to channel A and the vibration or microphone preamplifier connected to channel B. Connect the Spectramag unit to the printer port of the computer with the cable provided. Apply power to the Spectramag unit and check the indicator on the front panel is illuminated.

9 DC MAGNETIC MEASUREMENTS The PicoLog software is used for DC measurements and records the data at intervals of 100mS or more. Older versions of Picolog contained three parts, a monitor, a recorder and a player. In the latest version this has been reduced to a recorder and a
OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 6 of 27

player, the monitor function being incorporated into the recorder. The recorder controls the analog to digital converter, takes care of scaling, saves data to a file and allows it to be displayed as a chart or a table during recording. The player is used to replay an existing data file, even whilst recording a new file. Before starting PicoLog Recorder or PicoLog Player, ensure that power is applied to the Spectramag unit and PicoScope is not running. It is safer to close all other programs when recording data. It should be remembered that the Magnetometer is allocated to Channel A and the vibration sensor to Channel B. Start the Picolog Recorder program and select Normal operation. The Guided Tour option shows how to set up and run the recorder and player in a similar manner to the following procedure and can be run at any time but may change the current settings. The PLW Recorder window will now be seen. Select HELP to see the help index and select a topic for viewing. Close the HELP window. 9.1 PLW RECORDER SETTINGS In the PLW Recorder window are menu items File, Settings and View. There are also icons for New file, Re-record, Start recording, Pause/resume, Stop recording, Help, View Notes, View Graph and View Spreadsheet. The PLW Recorder should be set up correctly before making a recording. From the PLW Recorder window select File and New Settings and a new Recording dialog window will appear. In the Recording dialog leave the settings as: Recording method Real time continuous Action at end of run Stop Restart time 1 Minutes Then select OK and a new Sampling Rate dialog window will appear. In the Sampling Rate dialog select: Sampling interval 100 mS Max. No. of samples 600 (to give one-minute recordings for test purposes) Then select OK and a new Converter details dialog window will appear. In the Converter details dialog select: Converter type ADC-216 Port LPT1 (this is the usual setting) Click on the Check Status button and a Device status dialog window will appear which should confirm that an ADC-216 is connected on the appropriate printer port. If not, check the Spectramag power supply and connection to the LPT1 printer port. Alternatively, select LPT2 as the port and re-try. Then click OK in the Device status dialog and also in the Converter details dialog and a new ADC200 measurements dialog window will appear.

OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 7 of 27

In the ADC200 measurements dialog there will be a blank square for listing measurement channels. Select Add and a new Edit ADC200 measurement dialog window will appear. In this dialog set the following: Name Magnetic Channel A Measurement DC volts Voltage range 10V Scan time 10000 S To set the voltage input to be scaled in magnetic units of mG select the Options button. This will open a Parameter options dialog window. In this dialog set the following: Units mG Field width 7 Decimal places 2 Scaling for graphs Minimum value -1000.00 Maximum value 1000.00 Then select the Scaling button which will open a further Parameter scaling dialog window. In the Parameter Scaling dialog select: Scaling method equation Then in the dialog box enter the following equation: X*100 This will automatically calculate the magnetic field in mG from the input voltage value. Then select OK to return to the ADC200 measurements dialog window where the name Magnetic will be shown in the square. Select OK in the ADC200 measurements, Parameter options, Edit ADC200 measurement, and ADC200 measurements dialog windows. The PLW Recorder window should now indicate a green lamp with the name Magnetic and the measurement shown in mG. The data should be updating at onesecond intervals. The green lamp indicates that the measurement is within limits. As an option limits can be set and the indicator will then change colour to indicate an alarm condition. The initial setting up process is time consuming but it is only required once. The settings are automatically saved on exiting the program and will be restored when the program is restarted. The setting up process or some part of it will only be required to be repeated if changes are required to the parameters. Close the PLW Recorder window to end the program and then restart the program again. It will then be seen that the program resumes with the same parameters as before. Changes can be made to the parameters set above by either selecting New Settings, which will delete all existing settings and repeat the above procedure, or by selecting Settings, and then Recording, Converters, Sampling or Calculated parameters to edit only the individual parameter required.
OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 8 of 27

The Mag-01MS has an output of 10V full scale so a sensor with a range of 100T will have an output scaling as follows: 10V = 100T = 1Gauss 1V =10T = 100mGauss 100mV = 1T = 10mGauss 10mV = 100nT = 1mGauss 1mV = 10nT = 100Gauss

9.2 SAVING SETTINGS The settings for the PLW Recorder are saved when leaving the program. The program can therefore be closed down and when it is restarted it should show the magnetic field exactly as before. If the settings are lost for any reason they can be set again using the New Settings procedure shown above. 9.3 RECORDING To start recording the values shown in the PLW Recorder window it is necessary first to open a new file. Select File -New data or the New file icon. A dialog window for the new filename will appear. The filename will be suggested or a new one may be entered. The program will always offer the last filename with an incremented number. Enter C:\PICO\TEST1.PLW, then select OK. The filename will then appear in the PLW Recorder window. Select the Start recording icon and the sample number will increment from 0 to 600 as the recording is made. During or after the recording select the View Notes icon and a text box will provided to allow the operator to make notes about this record. To see the results in graphical form select the View Graph icon. To see the results in spreadsheet form, select the View Spreadsheet icon. In the View Graph window the value of any point can be determined by placing the cursor over the graph and reading out the co-ordinates. Within the graph window are controls which can be used to zoom in or out, or change the offset. The View options icon opens a window to allow a title to be added or the horizontal and vertical axes to be set to scale manually or automatically - always leave set to Automatic. In the View Graph window use the zoom and offset controls to expand the scales and change the offset. When these controls have been used the control of the vertical and time scales is set to manual and the scales are then fixed. This can lead to areas of the graph being out of the scale selected and can lead to confusion. To see this effect, move the recorded graph completely off the screen using the offset controls. Now there will be no indication of a record having been made. Select the View options icon and set the Format, Time axis scale and Vertical axis scale to Automatic. The graph will then be restored to the original scaling. Therefore for initial viewing always set the scales to Automatic using the View options control. In the View Graph window select Help to see a full explanation of the controls.
OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 9 of 27

Close the View Graph window and select View Spreadsheet to see the results in tabulated form. This window also allows data to be selected for copying to the clipboard or disc. Leave the notes spreadsheet and the recorder windows open. To record another 60 seconds of data select File - New data or the New File icon. Accept the new filename and then select the Start recording icon. A new record will appear in the three windows. Repeat this process to become familiar with the process and generate several records. During the recording move the Magnetic field sensor to see the effect on the records. 9.4 RE-RECORDING If an error occurs during recording, the current file can be overwritten by selecting the Re-record icon and then the Record icon. The Re-record icon causes the existing record to be deleted. This can be used on any record by opening the appropriate file and then selecting Re-record and then Record. 9.5 VIEWING EXISTING RECORDS The PLW Recorder can be used to view any existing record which was recorded using the same settings as are currently used. Select File - Open and from the Open dialog select a previously recorded file. The View Notes, View Graph and View Spreadsheet options can then be used as required to view this file. 9.6 EXPORTING DATA There are several methods available for exporting data to other Windows applications. The simplest direct method is to use the clipboard. After recording the data select View Spreadsheet. In the spreadsheet click on the Select icon which will select all the data. Then click on the Copy to Clipboard icon. This is equivalent to the Copy action in other Windows applications. Now open the application into which the data is to go (e.g. Excel) and select Edit - Paste and the data will be pasted into that application for further processing. Alternatively the data can be saved as a text file from within PLW Recorder window for use in other applications. When the data has been collected and the recorder has stopped select File - Save as. In the Save file as type box select Text files (*.txt) from the drop-down menu then type a name in the Filename box and choose a folder from the Folders box then select OK. The file will now be saved in the folder selected as a text file which can be imported into other programs. A text file will contain the bare data of time and field but without the headings which are available when the clipboard is used. 9.7 CHANGING SETTINGS For major changes to the settings, or if the settings become lost, use the New Settings option. For minor changes to settings use the Settings menu item. The settings used above for the PLW Recorder should be suitable for all operations with two exceptions. The Sampling Interval may be required to be longer than 100ms and the Maximum number of samples may need to be more than 600. To change these
OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 10 of 27

parameters select Settings - Sampling and set the Sampling interval to 100mS and the Maximum number of samples to 36000. This will give a recording for one hour at 100mS per sample. However, the resulting file will be too large to plot in Excel. Close the PLW Recorder window. 9.8 PLW PLAYER All data which has been recorded can be viewed using the PLW Player program. This will operate even when the PLW Recorder is collecting data. Start the PLW Player program. In the PLW Player window are menu items File, Settings and View. There are also icons for Previous file, Open old file, Next file, Help, View Notes, View Graph and View Spreadsheet. To view an existing file, select Open old file and in the dialog select the file which was recorded previously. The file details will appear in the window and View Graph and View Spreadsheet can be used to view the file in the same way as in the PLW Recorder program. The previous file and next file icons can be used to step through the data. Close the PLW Player window.

10 PICOSCOPE FOR AC MEASUREMENTS The PicoScope virtual instrument oscilloscope program is used for AC measurements. Measurements can be made with a display of voltage against a variable time base or as a spectral plot of voltage against frequency. The displays are in the form of voltage against time or frequency and interpretation of the results therefore requires knowledge of the scaling of the sensors used. Scaling details are given in Section 12. The Spectrum plot is most useful for magnetic field measurements and a maximum rms plot can be made over a long period to allow intermittent signals to be recorded. However, problems can arise in that the amplitude of a Spectrum plot will be reduced if the A/D converter approaches saturation at the waveform peaks. If the waveform is in a narrow band then the peak value may be more difficult to measure as it may be spread over two frequency bands in the chart. It is therefore recommended that the Scope display should also be inspected to check the spectrum result. If both Spectrum and Scope plots are displayed simultaneously it must be appreciated that the scanning process to produce a Spectrum plot takes a considerable time and this increases at lower frequency bands and at higher resolutions. The Scope plot will only be updated once for each new Spectrum plot. Before starting PicoScope ensure that the PicoLog PLW Recorder and PLW Player are both closed. It is safer to close all other programs when recording data. It should be remembered that the magnetometer is allocated to Channel A and the accelerometer for vibration sensing, or microphone for sound recording, is allocated to Channel B. Care must be taken to ensure that the correct channel has been selected for each measurement.
OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 11 of 27

In order to demonstrate the principles involved the following procedure shows how to set up both the Scope and the Spectrum display. Start the PicoScope program, maximise the large window and close the inner window. From the tool bar select View - New Scope or click the small red icon on the left of the toolbar to give an oscilloscope type display. Then select View - New Spectrum or click on the small yellow icon on the left of the toolbar to give a spectral plot type of display. This will give two overlapping windows. Select Window - Tile to separate them. By clicking in the top bar of the Scope and Spectrum windows in turn it will be seen that the toolbar of the main window changes to give appropriate parameter menus and icons. Each window may therefore be set independently to the required format. The top menu bar provides access to all available settings while the lower toolbar with icons and drop-down menus allows access to the most frequently used functions. The circular icon adjacent to the New Spectrum icon is equivalent to the menu ViewNew Meter. Check the operation of this and then close the meter window. Test the View New Scope and View New Spectrum controls and then close the windows generated. It is quite feasible to operate four windows, with a scope and a spectrum for channel A and channel B simultaneously but it may be confusing initially and the following guides the user through the measurement of each channel separately. 10.1 AC MAGNETIC FIELD MEASUREMENTS The magnetic field sensor is connected to Channel A and the vibration sensor to channel B. The following sections will explain in general terms how to set up an oscilloscope display and a spectrum display using the magnetic field channel and then how to show both views simultaneously. The vibration channel is set up in the same way with minor changes to the frequency range. Close all small windows and select View - New Scope and then, if necessary, expand the small window to fill the screen. At the bottom of the display is a red/green control which is used to stop and start the timebase. This can be used to freeze a frame or to start and stop a peak-reading spectrum display. Ensure that the feature shows a red Stop icon. This is the normal running position. When stopped a green Go sign is shown. 10.2 SETTING THE OSCILOSCOPE DISPLAY If the Scope display is not shown select View - New Scope. Select Settings - Timebase and set: Time/div 1ms/div X multiplier x10 This expands the x-axis for closer inspection. Close the Timebase window and note the X-axis is expanded and has a scroll bar to adjust the display.
OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 12 of 27

Repeat the above and set the X multiplier to x1 and note the normal X display. These parameters may also be set directly from the toolbar. Select Settings - Channels and set: Channels Channel A only Input voltage range both to Auto ChA Multiplier x5 ChB Multiplier off Close the Channels window and note the voltage scale is expanded and a scroll bar is provided to offset the scale. Repeat the above and set the X multiplier to off and the vertical scale will return to normal. These parameters may also be set directly from the toolbar. Select Settings - Trigger and set: Trigger set to not enabled Select OK Select Settings - Options and set: Title Magnetic scope Display a grid enabled Display axis scaling enabled Data to display current Slow sampling chart recorder Select OK Select Settings - Notes This screen allows notes to be saved with the data Select OK Select Settings - Measurements This dialog window allows selected measurements to be displayed below the scope display. Select Add and in the Measurement details dialog window select Measurement AC Voltage and then select OK. Alarms may also be set in this window if required. Having seen the options available, select Settings - Measurements and delete the AC Voltage option. Using the toolbar, select switch Channel B from Off to Auto and see both channels displayed. Note the two scales with Channel A in blue and Channel B in red. Test the functions in the toolbar to become familiar with them and then close the Scope window. 10.3 SETTING THE SPECTRUM DISPLAY WARNING. The spectrum display may give confusing results if the signal exceeds the input voltage range: we strongly advise using the highest scaling range available for measurements before reducing the range for detailed investigation. If the signal is
OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 13 of 27

variable or intermittent, it may be advisable to use a scope view to determine the maximum required voltage range, and then fix the spectrum range at that level. An over-range condition is indicated by a red ! in the left hand corner of the display. Select View - New Spectrum. It will be seen that the toolbar is similar to the Scope display but there are minor differences. Select Settings - Timebase and set: Max frequency 1.3kHz X multiplier x10 This expands the x-axis for closer inspection. Close the Timebase window and note the X-axis is expanded and has a scroll bar to adjust the display. Repeat the above and set the X multiplier to x1 and note the normal X display. These parameters may also be set directly from the toolbar. Select Settings - Channels and set: Channels Channel A only Input voltage range both to Auto Close the Channels window. These parameters may also be set directly from the toolbar. Select Settings - Trigger and set: Trigger set to not enabled Select OK Select Settings - Options and set: Title Magnetic spectrum X scale Linear Y scale Volts Window Blackman Number of spectral bands 4096 (greatest accuracy) Display mode normal (this will later be changed to peak) Select OK Select Settings - Notes This screen allows notes to be saved with the data Select OK With Channel A displayed, click the cursor in the display to see a ruler which will display the frequency and amplitude at that point. This can be used to measure the amplitude of the peaks in the spectrum. Test the functions in the toolbar to become familiar with them. The auto ranging which operates only with the Voltage ranges intially shown should ensure that the signal is within range of the A/D converter. A red warning signal will appear at the top left of the screen if the range is exceeded and the display should then be treated with caution. The use of custom ranges with magnetic and acceleration units is covered in a later section. Close the Spectrum window.
OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 14 of 27

OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 15 of 27

10.4 DISPLAYING TWO CHANNELS IN ONE WINDOW Channel A and Channel B can be displayed simultaneously in the same window if required. Select View - New Scope and in the toolbar switch Channel A to Auto and Channel B to Off. This shows Channel A only in blue. Now switch Channel A to Off and Channel B to Auto. This shows Channel B only in red. Now switch Channel A to Auto and the display will show Channels A and B superimposed. Similarly the two Spectra can be displayed together. To avoid confusion, it is recommended that only one channel is displayed in each window. 10.5 DISPLAYING SEVERAL WINDOWS SIMULTANEOUSLY It is possible to view several windows at once in the Picoscope program. Close any small existing windows and then select View - New Spectrum View - New Spectrum View - New Scope View - New Scope Window - Tile Now there will be four windows in the display. Select one Spectrum display by clicking in the top bar and then in the menu bar set Channel A to Auto and Channel B to Off. The display now shows the magnetic spectrum. Click in the top bar of the other Spectrum display and in the toolbar switch Channel A to Off and Channel B to Auto. This is the vibration spectrum. Click in the top bars of the Scope displays and set one to Channel A and one to Channel B. The display now shows the scope display for both channels and the Spectrum display for both channels. 10.6 CAPTURING TRANSIENT EVENTS The Spectrum display may be shown in three modes - Normal, Average or Peak. This is selected from the Settings - Options menu. The Normal setting redraws the spectrum each time it is measured, the Average mode draws the running average of a group of measurements while the Peak mode shows the maximum reading for each channel since the recording started. It can be halted by pressing the Stop control and will be reset to zero when the Start control is used. Using this mode it is therefore possible to capture transient events by leaving the record running over a period of say, one hour. In the Peak display mode the result is still presented in Volts rms. 10.7 SAVING RESULTS FROM PICOSCOPE Unlike the Picolog program where a new file is selected and the data is saved during the measurement, the Picoscope program displays the data and the operator must save it if required. The complete window with a mixture of Scope and Spectrum displays can be saved to memory using File - Save or File - Save As and selecting the .psd format. It is safer to use the File - Save As option to avoid writing over a previous file. To save data in this way select File - Save As and then in the lower window of
OM1577 ISSUE 7 PAGE 16 of 27

the dialog box select Save As File Type *.psd. In the upper window type in a filename before the extension and then select OK. When this file is opened, the complete window will be shown. Check this operation with several Scope and Spectrum windows open and then open the file to check the result has been saved. 10.8 EXPORTING DATA FROM PICOSCOPE There are several methods available for exporting data. Normally only one window can be handled at one time. To export to another Windows application the simplest method is to use the clipboard. Select one window by clicking in the top bar and then from the menu select Edit - Copy as Text or Edit - Copy as Graph. Then start another application such as Excel or Word and select Edit - Paste. This will paste the data directly into the application in the selected format. Alternatively the data can be saved in a text file which can be imported into another application later. Select the window to be saved by clicking in the top bar. Select File - Save As and in the lower window select the Save File as Type to be *.TXT. Then complete the filename in the upper dialog box and select OK. The data are then stored in a text file as a table of voltage and time, voltage and frequency or dB and frequency as appropriate. 10.9 CUSTOM RANGES Using PicoScope V5.06 and later, the user can define ranges in addition to the ranges 50mV to 20V available as standard for the Scope and Spectrum displays. This allows the measurements to be scaled in mGauss or g. In order to use this scaling it is necessary to define each range required in terms of the minimum and maximum values and the units. From the PicoScope display select Settings - Custom Ranges. A Custom Range List will be shown with any existing custom ranges. To add a new range select Add. A new Edit Custom Range form will then be presented. Select Conditioner-None and Sensor-None. As the sensors are linear it is necessary only to indicate two points for scaling. Click in the Scaling box and type a pair of values for the minimum and maximum values required according to the example on the form. For the 100T magnetic field sensor the scaling will be 10V/100T, 10V/Gauss or 10mV/mGauss. Therefore to provide a custom range of 1mG type in the box: -10 -1 10 1 and in the units type mGaus. Always enter the lowest values in the first line and use a space to separate the values as shown. This represents the extremes of the range as -10mV = -1mG and +10mV = +1mG. The minimum and maximum values will be displayed automatically on the form. When completed, select OK and the range 1mGaus will be seen in the custom range list. Click on OK and the range 1mGaus should be seen at the bottom of the dropdown voltage range list.

Further custom ranges for the magnetometer and accelerometer can now be added as follows: Range required Enter in Scaling Box Enter in Units For the magnetic field sensor (10V/Gauss = 10mV/mGauss) -20 -2 mGaus 2mG 20 2 -50 -5 mGaus 5mG 50 5 -100 -10 mGaus 10mG 100 10 -200 -20 mGaus 20mG 200 20 -500 -50 mGaus 50mG 500 50 -1000 -100 mGaus 100mG 1000 100 -10000 -1 Gauss 1G 10000 1 For the vibration sensor (1V/mg = 1mV/g) using x1000 range -10 -10 ug 10g 10 10 -20 -20 ug 20g 20 20 -50 -50 ug 50g 50 50 -100 -100 ug 100g 100 100 -200 -200 ug 200g 200 200 -500 -500 ug 500g 500 500 -1000 -1 mg 1mg 1000 1 -2000 -2 mg 2mg 2000 2 -5000 -5 mg 5mg 5000 5 -10000 -10 mg 10mg 10000 10 It is suggested that only the ranges of interest for the Scope and Spectrum displays should be entered from the above list. When the list is complete or when any change is made to the list, select File - Save Settings to save the custom ranges for future use. It should be carefully noted that the mGauss and Gauss ranges should be applied only to Channel A for the magnetic sensor and the g and mg ranges should only be used for the accelerometer on Channel B. The software cannot determine which sensor is connected to which channel. Therefore when a Scope display or Spectrum display is selected, only one channel should be displayed, the other turned to OFF and the correct scaling selected from the list.

11. PRACTICAL AC MEASUREMENTS The above detailed setting-up instructions should now enable the operator to set the system as appropriate. The PicoScope program allows the simultaneous recording of two or more channels so the magnetic field and vibration can be recorded at the same time. It is most important that the correct channel is selected when setting up the display and it is strongly recommended that each title bar be used to describe the recording as either magnetic or vibration to avoid confusion. It is most important to observe the scaling of the magnetic field sensor and the scaling and amplification factor of the accelerometer vibration sensor. See section 12 for details of the voltage output with different sensor ranges. The procedures used on site, processing of the data and setting limits are the responsibility of GE Medical System and do not form part of the Spectramag system. It is suggested that initially the set-up should be made to display two Spectrum plots and one Scope plot as shown in the following table.

Plot type Title Channel AC/DC Range Timebase Timebase multiplier No. of bands Scale Window Mode

Spectrum Spectrum Magnetic Vibration Spectrum Spectrum A B AC AC Auto or as required 1.3kHz 163Hz X1 X1 256 Volts Hanning Peak 1024 Volts Hanning Average

Scope Vibration Scope B AC 1ms/div X1

When the above has been set up or whenever changes have been made select File Save Settings and then whenever PicoScope is run the same screen will appear. When running a Peak Spectrum plot, any changes to the settings in either window will cause the spectral plot to stop and restart, loosing any recorded data. The plots may be restarted at any time using the Stop/Go button at the bottom of the screen. If a red exclamation mark (!) is seen on the left of a spectral plot it indicates that a signal has been detected which is out of the current range setting of the Y axis. The scaling should be set manually to the widest range initially and then switched to the more sensitive ranges. It must be remembered that the scale of the display shows the rms value but the peak, which the A/D converter must read, is much higher. This is particularly true at lower frequencies where 1/f noise predominates.

15 POSSIBLE PROBLEMS PLW RECORDER How can I delete an existing channel in the PLW Recorder window? Select File - New settings Why does the recorder not start when Start recording is selected? A file must be allocated using the New file option before a recording can start. Why is the graph area blank in the View Graph option? A new file will show as a blank until the Start recording icon is selected. Why is the data not seen on the graph? It is probably out of range. Select View options in the graph window and set the Time axis scale and Vertical axis scale to Automatic. The graph should now be scaled correctly. PICOSCOPE DISPLAY How do I ensure the program starts with the last settings? Use File.. Save Settings before exiting the program. Why is the Spectrum display smaller than expected? The A/D converter may be overloaded, particularly at lower frequencies. This will cause the displayed values to be reduced below the true values. Select the highest range available and then step down. Ensure the red warning block is not present. Why is the display static? The stop button may have been activated. If there is a green GO sign at the bottom of the display, click it to start. If Spectrum displays are shown, each Scope display will only be refreshed once after the spectral data has been updated. Measurements of low frequency spectra can take a considerable time. Why is the PicoScope signal amplitude much smaller than expected or at some DC level? The program may have been started before the Spectramag unit was connected and powered up or the supply to the Spectramag unit may have been interrupted. This may have changed the settings of the A/D converter. Close the program down and restart it.
