PRESIDENT S MESSAGE

KOOKMIN UNIVERSITY: Change, Chance, Challenge

KMU will dream with you! Your dream might stay a dream, but it can come true when it is shared with other people. KMU will go through changes, create opportunities, and face challenges with you. Welcome to Kookmin University! Kookmin University, the first private university after Koreas independence, was established by Mr. Shin, Ik Hee and other main members of the Shanghai interim government of Korea. Deeply rooted in the four founding principles, humanism, nationalism, culturalism, and industrialism that Mr. Kim, Sung Gon emphasized, Kookmin University has grown into a fixture of the academia of Korea with 23,000 students enrolled. In the midst of the ever changing academic climate and social changes, with selfless dedication from all members of KMU, we strive to become a globally recognized institute by making a world of academia unique to none other than KMU as well as being bold to the changes and challenges ahead. The brand of development KMU thrives for starts from change; a change is a chance and a chance is a challenge. We need to actively deal with changes that we must go through in the process of growth by renovating and challenging ourselves to be prepared for any crises. Now universities of a knowledge base society have entered into a competition that is more severe than ever before. KMU is trying to solidify its educational foundation to maintain its role as a leading player by employing three operative goals such as attracting outside funding, establishing the standards of reasonable distribution of resources, and building an efficient structural system. Your dream does not have to stay a dream because your dream can turn into a reality when it is shared with others. KMU will dream with you. KMU will go through changes, create opportunities, and face challenges with you. There is nothing impossible if you are with KMU. We will make KMU a type of university people want to be part of, graduates are proud of, and that values hard work and quality education rather than what is just shown on the surface. Today I urge you to be part of supporting KMU as she goes through each new challenge and turns it into an opportunity! Thank you!

President Ji Soo Yu

INTRODUCTION to KMU

RECOGNITION

INTRODUCTION to KOOKMIN UNIVERSITY

As soon as Korea gained its independence from Japanese imperialism in 1945, the cabinet members of the Shanghai Provisional Government established Kookmin University in 1946 with the aim of training leaders to rebuild the nation. Meeting that need has been the longstanding vision of Kookmin University. Mr. Shin, Ik Hee, who was one of the founding members of the University, became the the first President of Kookmin. He later went on to serve as the first House Speaker of the National Assembly. In 1959, Mr. Kim, Sung Gon, founder of the Ssangyong Corporation, took over the Kookmin Foundation and led remarkable developments of the university. His educational philosophy was to bring up leaders who can contribute to the modernization of Korea. Since then, Kookmin University has endeavored to achieve this goal. Surrounded by the Bukhansan National Park, Kookmin University boasts a clean and green environment complimented by the most up-to-date educational facilities. Currently, Kookmin University consists of 24,000 students, 700 faculty, and 300 staff members with 13 colleges and 13 graduate schools. While preserving the traditional values that have yielded success, Kookmin University strives to educate its students to be creative, open-minded, and principled professionals who can serve not only our nation but also the global community.

Through our educating process, students are prepared for modeling abilities, artistic sensibility, imaginative and expressive power throughout the fields of industrial, transformational, environmental, interior and exterior designs.

While other university design programs remained under their colleges of Fine Arts, our professors stressed the importance of design in choosing the department name Faculty of Design in 1975 and then College of Design in 1980. This set Kookmin University's design program apart from all others. Our determined design educators built a college with a new curriculum and teaching method based upon student experience and motivation. Today, too, we support each student's creative ideas and experimental concepts with open minds. Consequently, we are especially known for our teaching know-how. All of these efforts have formed the strong identity the College of Design has today. Department of Interior Design
The department of Interior Design at Kookmin University realizes the challenges that our living space will face in the coming years and has created an educational format that prepares students for the prospects of the future. One such method is to isolate the various design elements that permeate our living space and focus on each element. For example, interior elements may focus on colors, materials and textures, electronics, and lighting, while architectural elements would focus on commercial, recreational, and cultural spaces. The end result prepares future professionals capable of solving design problems in any given circumstance with clarity, understanding, and expertise.

Department of Visual Communication Design

The Department of Visual Communication Design fosters the growth of students' aesthetic abilities and intellectual insights needed to design information. From visualizing information, and to its production and distribution, the department oversees processes of creative thinking to achieve pragmatic solutions. The curriculum is structured dynamically in order for students to be exposed simultaneously to diverse medium and to gain in-depth specialized knowledge. Courses can be channeled into two different tracks: the Graphic track and the Film/Video and Media track. By balancing studio and theoretical courses, students are intensively trained to expand their professional skills as well as developing themselves as thoughtful, cultural producers.

Department of Entertainment Design

The objective of the Department of Entertainment Design is to nurture creative new talent to reinforce social responsibility and ethics in the field of design while also leading the way in a high-value entertainment culture by integrating culture, technology, and design. As the heart of the cultural industry, the field of entertainment is playing a more valuable role in modern society. As it is known that Korea has a long tradition of elegant, highly dignified entertainment, the Department of Entertainment Design aspires to seamlessly combine our cultural historicity with design and technology to mold an integrated modernity and accomplish a more involved and touching human communication. The Department of Entertainment Design offers a systemic and professional education in the following: The image contents industry, such as special effects in digital images, visual advertisements, music videos, motion graphics, and 3D animation; New-form entertainment, a newly born and evolving field that blends fine arts, performance arts, architecture, gaming, communications, IT, and engineering; Event design, which consists of both tangible and intangible cultural service contents. The Department of Entertainment Design is differentiated from other medium-centered design education institutions, as it offers an integrated and generative educational paradigm centered on concepts. We strive to contribute to the establishment of a high-quality global entertainment culture that transcends the boundary between academe and culture.
