Through class discussion and intensive individual conference, instructors will guide student use of evidence to support topic sentences and theses. Transferability of this course is determined by the institution of transfer. A final grade of C or higher in this course is necessary for subsequent registration in COMP110. Prerequisites Writing sample score of 4 OR successful completion of COMP090: Basic Writing course with a grade of C or higher. Course Objectives The purpose of this course is to develop in the student the ability to write logical, coherent, thoughtful, well-developed paragraphs, paragraph units, and essays. Attention will be given to such matters as prose

style, grammatical correctness, language, and analytical thinking. The primary objectives of the class are to develop fluency in student writing and to prepare students for COMP110. By the end of the semester, students should be able to -1. use at least eight of the following expository strategies: narration and description, exemplification, comparison/contrast, definition, persuasion, and various methods of analysis: division, classification, process, and cause and effect; 2. compose a multi-paragraph essay (at least 500 words) which has a thoughtful thesis; is developed with concrete and specific details and examples that support the thesis; and is coherently organized, with a clear understanding of introductory, developmental, and concluding paragraphs; 3. write varied sentences, using appropriate standard American English, free of most errors in mechanics, usage, grammar, and spelling; 4. think and read critically, responding to ideas/materials from the readings in the assigned expository essays they write.

Tutoring Center: Room 003 (New Building, right off of cafeteria) 215-258-7721 th All students are expected to use the services of the Tutoring Center at least one time before the end of the 5 week of class (THAT IS FRIDAY, 09/27/13). Students who are referred to the Tutoring Center must attend within the specified time period and must submit a short summary of the tutorial. The Tutoring Center visit is a prerequisite for your graduation from this course. No tutoring center=no passing the class. Some students may be required to go to the Tutoring Center prior to the submission of a paper or papers.

Policy Concerning Rewrites/Revisions Students may replace two (2) grades, excluding in-class writings, essays, and late writings, by revising the paragraph/ paragraph unit according to the following criteria: 1. 2. 3. prior approval of the instructor work with a tutor in the Tutoring Center (exclusively). revision (with all drafts, the referral form, and the original paper) returned within a specific time period as specified.

Grading The final grade will be computed as follows: 20% 20% 30% 20% 10% Assignments #1-#4 Assignments #5-#8 Assignments #9-#11 Assignment #12: The Final Writing Exercises, quizzes, drafts, workshop evaluations, miscellaneous

Other matters will be considered in the determination of the final grade: attendance, class participation, further Tutoring Center visits, and commitment to improvement. All writing assignments must be completed in order for the student to receive a passing grade in the course. A student whose work is consistently late or who does not submit all writing assignments should not expect a passing grade in the class. There will be no extra credit work, and no quizzes or in-class work may be made up without documentation (approval at the instructors discretion). Incomplete grades will only be awarded in cases

3 COMP107 U02 Fall 2013/Afzal (Rogan de Ramrez)

of extreme hardship. In order to receive a grade of C or better, a student will be expected to demonstrate readiness for COMP 110: English Composition I (1) by writing strong, competent paragraphs, paragraph units, and essays; (2) by writing paragraphs, paragraph units, and essays in class that are consistent with out-of-class writing assignments, that demonstrate critical thinking, and that are of sufficient quality to demonstrate writing competence. A student must pass at least one of the in-class writing assignments and the in-class final writing in order to pass the course. The instructor will make a judgment about the students readiness for COMP 110 based on the above criteria. In-class Assignments There will be at least 2 in-class assignments. This means that you will only have the time of a single class session in order to compose a specific in-class writing and then hand in your paper. Writing well under the pressure of a specific, short time requirement is an important skill to have in your academic toolbox. Attendance Policy Students must attend class regularly. Students are responsible for all course work and for meeting the deadlines; absence from class will not release students from this responsibility. Students are expected to be present for announced in-class writing days. Students may make up this work only with a medical excuse or some other valid, documented excuse, and at the convenience of the instructor. The instructor will make a decision on the validity of medical and other verifiable excuses based on the seriousness of the problem or affliction. (The make-up writing will be penalized at the discretion of the instructor according to the documentation.) All documentation must be presented at the time of the students return to class. Medical excuses or court appearances do not automatically absolve students from poor attendance. Six absences are permitted, period. The six absences include illness, car accidents, court dates, etc. There are no excused absences. A student who is absent more than six (6) times will fail the course. Punctual arrival at class is essential; excessive lateness will be counted as absences. Late Writing Assignments Students are expected to meet the announced deadlines. All work will be due during class on the date listed on the syllabus. Work must be turned in to the instructor or checked in with the administrative assistant. One late assignment is permitted with the penalty of a reduction of one grade, provided the assignment is submitted within one week of the original due date. Beyond the one late writing permitted per student, the instructor will not accept any additional late writing assignments without an official medical excuse provided immediately upon the students return. Late writing assignments may not be revised and resubmitted for a grade change. Special Needs In compliance with the Bucks County Community College policy and equal access laws, appropriate academic accommodations can be made for students eligible for such support. Students are encouraged to register with the Disabilities Services Office (215-968-8463) to verify their eligibility for appropriate accommodations. Please speak to your instructor about any requests for academic accommodations or other concerns as early in the semester as possible. If you have any special needs or anticipate any problems with the class, please speak with me after class or during my office hours to arrange academic accommodations through the Student Disabilities Office. Statement on Student Responsibility Students are always responsible for retaining copies of their own work and/or correspondence, including that posted to a web course page. Student access to a Bucks County Community College web course space is available only during the stated semester/session as indicated by the Colleges academic calendar. All web course sites, including content, are routinely removed from the server at the conclusion of each semester/session.

4 COMP107 U02 Fall 2013/Afzal (Rogan de Ramrez)

The Academic Environment In order to foster an environment conducive to learning, it is imperative that all members of the class treat each other with courtesy and respect. Students who are unprepared, unable to contribute to the discussion, or who are disruptive will be asked to leave the room and appropriately penalized with an absence. In addition, students should be aware of certain traditions or the protocol required in particular situations. For example, it is customary to ask permission of the instructor before a visitor is brought to class. Likewise, it is customary to follow a chain of command for problems or disputes with the instructor as the first link in that chain; the student should notify the instructor first. Students should turn off their cell phones and put them away. No calls are to be received or sent during class. Text-messaging is not allowed. Laptops are not allowed. General Policies and Procedures Format: Writing assignments must conform to the announced guidelines governing format and presentation: name in upper left hand corner, date, name of assignment, and title centered (no title page). The final draft should be on the top, clearly numbered drafts follow in reverse chronological order from latest to earliest. Papers that do not conform to the format and/or those without drafts will not be accepted. Thus, the paper will receive a grade of 0 or will receive a late penalty. All final drafts of writing assignments should be typed. Folders: All work must be kept in a folder and organized chronologically. This folder should be available during class periods and conferences. Tutoring Center: Students must do all of the writing themselves. Only the tutors in the Tutoring Center and the instructor may give specific help with writing assignments, not family, friends, or neighbors. Copied or shared answers for the homework assignments are not acceptable. Students must plan on visiting the Tutoring Center at least 1 time during the semester. Successful students make regular visits to the Tutoring Center. All students are expected to use the services of the Tutoring Center at least one time before the end of the fifth week (THAT IS FRIDAY, 09/27/12). Peer Reviews/Evaluations: Responding to the work of others is a critical part of the learning process, and writers benefit from having their work read and commented on. Therefore, students are required to exchange drafts with other student and to make an effort to discuss and assess the drafts of other students in a professional way. We will therefore have two or more peer reviews in class. Participation and Attendance: Students are expected to come to class with the appropriate materials and prepared to learn. Students can earn points with active contribution to the discussions, workshops, and peer evaluations. Showing-up does not constitute active participation. Readings and homework should be prepared in advance of the class and all work should be turned in on time. Late work will be penalized. Successful students attend consistently and make a sustained effort to improve their writing. They are also present in the class for instruction. Also, I reserve the right to count you absent for missing too much of any single class be it arriving late, vanishing in the middle, or leaving early. Submission of Work: All work is due at the beginning of class. Late writing assignments will be penalized one grade and must be turned in within one week of the original due date/time. No work will be accepted past this period. Only one late writing assignment will be accepted during the semester. There is no make-up for late homework assignments, class activities, and quizzes. All work is due as expected. Late work will not be accepted beyond one week from the original due date.

7. Plagiarism: There is zero tolerance for plagiarism, which includes claiming the work of others as your own, copied or shared answers, and use of the internet. Students should refer to the Academic Regulations section of the college catalog for important rules governing academic work, cheating, and plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious matter and will not be tolerated. Infractions will be filed with the Vice President and Academic Dean and will result in failure of the assignment and/or the course. Electronic Devices: All electronic devices including cell phones must be put turned off and put away. Text-messaging and phone calls are not permitted. Students who violate this policy may be asked to leave the class and are marked absent. Emergency situations will be considered on an individual basis. Computers and Computer Lab: There is no expectation of privacy in computer labs. Students are expected to remain on task and focused at all times. Checking email, exploring websites, checking Facebook, and playing games violate this policy, and this behavior is an extreme negative in terms of participation credit. You may be asked to leave the class and receive an absence.

9.

10. Jump Drives: All students must bring a device for saving their work. Always remember to save your work. 11. Agreement with General Policies: Students who elect to remain in the class after review of these policies shall be considered in agreement with these regulations, as with acceptance of a contract. Plagiarism: [From the College Catalog] The expectation at Bucks County Community College is that the principles of truth and honesty will be rigorously followed in all academic endeavors. This assumes that all work will be done by the person who purports to do the work without unauthorized aids. In addition, when making use of language, information, and some ideas not his or her own, whether quoting them directly or paraphrasing them into his or her own words, the student must attribute the source of the material in some standard form, such as naming the source in the text or offering a footnote. [Note that the assignments in COMP107 do not require outside research and such research is expressly forbidden.] 12. Course Syllabus: Please refer to the official course syllabus---
