In the Options (e.g Word Options) go to "Resources". There you can run "Run Microsoft Office diagnostics". Maybe it can fix it.

Tutorial Tools
1. Open the Start Menu. 2. Click on the Computer button. 3. Right click on your hard drive and click on Properties. 4. Click on the Tools tab. 5. Click on Check Now under the Error checking section. (See circled in red below)
6. Click on Continue in the UAC prompt. 7. Make sure both options are checked. (See screenshot below) NOTE: The Automatically fix file system errors box will be checked by default . 8. Click on the Start button.
9. You will get a pop-up window saying, "Windows can't check this disk while it's use". (See screenshot below) 10. Click on the Schedule disk check button for chkdsk to run the next time you restart your computer.
2. To Run chkdsk from the Vista Installation DVD Recovery Console A) Place the Vista installation DVD into the DVD drive and restart the computer. B) Boot from the DVD into the System Recovery Options screen. NOTE: For how, see : How to Do a Startup Repair in Vista C) Select Command prompt. D) Go to step 4 below.
4. In the command prompt, type chkdsk or chkdsk C: followed by one or a combination of switches listed in steps 4A to 4D below and press Enter . See the screenshot below for all switch combinations. NOTE: If you want check disk to scan a drive other than the C: drive, then substitute the drive letter C: after chkdsk to the drive letter that you want. EX: chkdsk E:
B) /r = The /r switch tells chkdsk to attempt to recover any bad sectors of the hard drive if any are found. A bad sector is a spot on the hard drive that cannot hold saved data anymore. (See screenshot below) EX Type: chkdsk /r or chkdsk C: /r NOTE: Answer Y when chkdsk asks you if you want to check the drive next time Windows Vista boots.
C) /i = The /i switch tells chkdsk to perform a less detailed but faster disk check. (See screenshot below) EX Type: chkdsk /i or chkdsk C: /i NOTE: This will run immediately.
D) /c = The /c switch tells chkdsk to skip the checking of cycles within a folder structure which reduces the scan time. EX Type: chkdsk /c or chkdsk C: /c NOTE: This will run immediately.
5. Close the command prompt. 6. Restart the computer to run chkdsk at startup.
1. Open a elevated command prompt . 2. To Reset and Check All Drives and Run CHKDSK if a Drive is Dirty A) In the command prompt, type chkntfs /d and press Enter . (See screenshot below) NOTE: Restores the computer to the default behavior; all drives are checked at boot time and chkdsk is run on those that are marked dirty . B) Go to step 4.
3. To Check a Specific Drive and Run CHKDSK if the Drive is Dirty A) In the command prompt, type chkntfs /c C: and press Enter . (See screenshot below) NOTE: This will schedule the C: drive to be checked at boot time. If the drive is marked dirty, then chkdsk will run. If you want to schedule another drive letter to be checked, then substitute C: with the drive letter you want checked instead .
4. To Mark a Drive Dirty A) In the command prompt, type fsutil dirty set c: and press Enter . (See
screenshot below) NOTE: This marks the c: drive as dirty so chkdsk will run at startup. If you want to run chkdsk on another drive letter, then substitute c: for the drive letter you want instead . B) You will now get a Volume - c: is now marked dirty message.
5. Close the elevated command prompt. 6. Restart the computer. NOTE: Chkdsk will now run at startup. If chkdsk does not run at startup, then run chkntfs /d in step 5A again and see : How to Fix Chkdsk will Not Run at Startup in Vista

Code:
7. Clear the box, then right click on a empty area in the box and click on Paste to copy the
code above into it. (See screenshot below)

I tried Method 3, and that didn't work. I also tried chkdsk C: /f and chkntfs /c C: with no avail. When I tried sfc /scannow, the scan began and got to the point: Verification 66% complete. Windows Resorces Protection could not perform the requested operation. I also tried chkdsk /i. The scan began the verification. During the verification 117,504 file records were processed, 6 segments were indicated to be corrupt. 93 large files were processed. It then stated: Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.

Thanks for all your suggestions. My computer locked up in Safe Mode and I was not able to get back to Normal Mode. The only recourse I had was to reimage the hard drive. Everything is now back to normal. Fortunately I had a back-up of all my files. Thanks to all that offered suggestions.

I have tried all of these methods, and none of them have worked. The one that I thought would be best was the last one, it found a lot of errors but then I couldn't use the program. I found however it I attempt to uninstall it the company offers me a trial 30 day activation key. It might be nice to add that, however right now I still have not fixed my corrupt file which happens to be my C: Users / my_name I have tried doing all methods, and when I tried to do it with my Vista DVD it gave me an error saying the files were unwritable or something and would not allow me to run the chkdsk. Any suggestions? EDIT: The final method actually worked thanks =). I would suggest adding how to get the activation code, because some of us are kinda stupid and don't notice the obvious.

I'm glad to hear that you resolved your problem. What program are your referring to when you mention uninstall and a 30 day activation key?

I've done that (after Vista was crashed all my user folders, and then when it was almost killed my laptop by automated update), no result... what can i do? sometimes vista says on startup, that one more folder is corrupt and unreadable, the only way to repair is to copy that folder from previously saved backup copy, but yesterday i've lost email database - with all passwords etc.... how can i repair the disk?

madmonkey, I guess that Vista would use the same Aurora boot screen as it would from the resume from sleep. Did you already change your boot screen and still see the Aurora at resume from sleep? Do you have your sleep option set for resume display at logon screen? Shawn

( 9 mins later) Editing post, becasue I attempted to do the same thing to the winresume.exe.mui file by using a copy of the boot screen ive got working only renamed to match, closed lid, resumed, same thing, got the Aura screen saying "resuming windows" with the green bar on the bottom

NOTE Check Disk uses the file autochk.exe to run chkdsk. If you still cannot run chkdsk at startup after this, then you might consider performing a System Restore , Repair Installation, or Clean Installation to fix the problem. See related links below. If you had changed your default boot screen , then you will need to temporarily uncheck the No GUI boot to be able to see what is happening when chkdsk is running at boot up. HP Laptop Vista Ultimate 64 Hit F8 once every second right after starting the PC This gets you into the DOS looking screen with safe mode and other options, select Repair Recovery manager starts
Select Advanced Options Select computer checkup Select command prompt CMD prompt starts in X: Enter C: to change to the C drive Enter chkdsk /f When asked to force a dismount select Y Check disk should now start automatically. Exit then boot

Hello, I've followed all the steps here up to and including taking ownership of the file autochk. When I cick properties > Details, it does not give me a file version of autochk. It is just blank. Is there anyway to figure out what version I have or am I missing a step somewhere?
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. Any help would be appreciated, and if you need more information, than I can try to get as much as you need. Thank you! Robyn

When the File version is blank, then use step 6 if you have SP1 installed or step 7 if you do not. I updated the tutorial for this. Hope this helps you, Shawn

This is my second time having to go through replacing disk check since I had to re-install vista because when I installed (sp1) it seriously messed up my system. These forums have been an amazing source of help...which is why I would like to add that "the 6.0.6001.18000 Version of autochk.exe" might not work whether you have the (sp1) installed or not. Quote from this forum, "This is for the 32 bit and 64 bit Vista with SP1 installed ." If "6.0.6000.16386 Version of autochk.exe" is one that you used before, regardless of whether you have (sp1) installed or not, it will still work. Quote from this forum, "This is for the 32 bit and 64 bit Vista without SP1 installed ." I hope this is helpful.

This did not work for me. I'm on a Gateway P-6831FX with Vista Home Premium x64 SP1. I followed everything exactly, but it still won't run CHKDSK at startup. I noticed when I run SFC /SCANNOW it says there are files it could not fix. I briefly skimmed through the log but didn't notice anywhere where it mentioned errors. I will have to check it more thoroughly later Also the AUTOCHK.EXE file gets corrupted after every reboot. Any ideas? I have ran the CHKDSK through the recovery console after booting from the DVD of Vista, and it reports no errors.

It may be beyond simple repair. You might try doing a System Restore with a restore point dated before this problem started to see if it can help. Shawn

How to Repair and Verify the Integrity of Vista System Files with System File Checker
Information System File Checker (SFC) checks that all Vista system files are where they should be as they were by default and not corrupted, changed, or damaged. This will show you how to verify and repair the integrity of Vista system files with the System File Checker (SFC) command codes. Tip NOTE: This is for when after you run the SFC scan below, it cannot finish or repair a file . There is no guarantee that SFC can repair the system files if they are corrupted or damaged to much. If SFC still cannot repair them after this, then you might try running Check Disk (chkdsk) , System Restore , a Repair Installation, or a clean reinstall of Vista.

NOTE: When SFC runs, it logs it's actions to the C:\WINDOWS\LOGS\CBS\CBS.LOG. You can find the specific SFC entries by searching for the [SR] tags in the log .
Applies to
A) For how,to see only the SFC scan details in the CBS.LOG: Open a elevated command prompt . In the elevated command prompt, type findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt and press Enter . Close the elevated command prompt. Click on the sfcdetails.txt file that was just placed on your desktop to see the SFC scan details (ones with the [SR] tags) in the CBS.LOG. You can safely delete the sfcdetails.txt file afterwards if you like.
NOTE: If SFC cannot fix a file, it will be listed in the CBS.LOG above. Read the CBS.LOG to find out what file it is so you can replace it with a good copy . A) For how, see: Microsoft Help and Support: KB929833 and Access Vista Install DVD Files

A) sfc /scannow - Scans the integrity of all protected system files and repairs the system files if needed. (See screenshot below) NOTE: Restores Vista's original setup of system files. (EX: Fonts, wallpapers, System32 files, etc.)
B) sfc /verifyonly - Scans and only verifies the integrity of all proteced system files only. (See screenshot below) NOTE: If it finds anything like in the screenshot below boxed in red at the bottom, you should run step A to see if it can fix it. See how to read the CBS log above for details on the SFC scan results.
C) sfc /scanfile=(full path of file) - Scans the integrity of the chosen system file and repairs it if needed. EX: sfc /scanfile=C:\Windows\System32\kernal32.dll D) sfc /verifyfile=(full path of file) - Scans and only verifies the integrity of the chosen system file. i followed your guide as i keep getting all kinds of alerts telling me that processes are shutting down. I did the scannow and the result said that there were errors but these could not be fixed. the results were saved in the log files.
So i at least now know there are errors but still can't fix them. Does this now mean i need to do a repair install? Many Thanks Sean

For method 2, how could one do that if the computer came with Vista already installed? Also, I have a CD that came with the computer that says: Operating System Already installed on Your Computer on the top of the disc.

So I'm having the dreaded chkdsk issue (which I would LOVE to know how it even started!), and Vista refuses to allow the disk to be checked for errors. I've tried EVERYTHING. So, I went to do a system restore. Sadly, it won't let me do that because my drive has errors and I need to check the disk. This is an endless circle. What can I do?

Hi VMLENZA, I do not know which log it will be in, but you can look around in Event Viewer (C:\Windows\System32\eventvwr.msc) to see if there is a log of it. Hopefully someone may know the exact log it will be in and post it for you. If it was recent, you could look in Windows Udpates View update history to help narrow it down.

Hi,

Dwarf
You can also perform a system restore from the command prompt version of Safe Mode. Reboot into 'Safe Mode with Command Prompt'. You will need to log on. At the prompt, enter 'rstrui' and provide administrative credentials when prompted. You should be able to use System Restore as normal when it appears.

If you have a Anytime Upgrade Vista installation DVD, then you will not be able to do this. The Vista installation DVD that you use to do the repair (upgrade) install must be the same or newer version of Vista with the Windows Updates and SP level than what you currently have installed. If the DVD is a older version, then you cannot do a repair (upgrade) install with it.
This will not work if you have SP1 and SP2 installed unless your Vista installation DVD includes SP2. Be sure to backup any important data you have, just in case something goes wrong during installation. You may need to reinstall some of your drivers. You do not want to do this if you are dual booting with XP and Vista was not installed as the primary boot drive. It can cause XP to not startup anymore.
This will not work if you have SP1 installed unless your Vista installation DVD includes the SP1, or you create a Vista SP1 slipstream installation DVD (See below). When the SP1 is installed, it will give Vista a newer version number than what is on the original Vista installation DVD. You can only do a Upgrade install if the currently installed Vista is the same or older version than what is on the Vista installation DVD. To create a Vista SP1 slipstream installation DVD to use to do a Repair (upgrade) install, see: How to Create a Vista SP1 Slipstream Installation DVD . Note that this does not always work to use for a Repair install. Another option is to uninstall the Vista SP1 , then run the Repair install and install the SP1 again afterwards. To uninstall the SP1, see: Microsoft Help and Support: How to uninstall Windows Vista SP1 as a troubleshooting step
Tip If you are have installation error problems, then see: Windows Help and Support: KB935806 Troubleshooting Stop error messages that may occur when you try to install Windows Vista Windows Help and Support: KB929777 Error message when you try to install Windows Vista on a computer that uses more than 3 GB of RAM: "STOP 0x0000000A"

Here's How:
NOTE If Vista is still not working properly afterwards, then a Clean Install would be recommended. You may need to reinstall some of your drivers after the Repair (upgrade) install. You will not be able to do a upgrade install in Safe Mode.
1. Insert the Vista DVD into the DVD drive while your current Vista is running. WARNING: Do not boot the computer and run the Vista installation DVD from boot. A upgrade install will not work this way. 2. Click on Install Now to start the upgrade. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: If AutoPlay does not load the Vista setup screen, then open your DVD drive in Computer and click on the Setup file.
3. If you want Vista to check for updates during the installation, then click on that to select it. (See screenshot below) NOTE: It will install faster if you select Do not get the latest updates for installation . You can install them later through Windows Update.
4. Do not type in a product key. (See screenshot below) WARNING: If you do type in the same activated product key that you already have installed, then you can end up in Reduced Functionality Mode. See: How to Get Out of Reduced Functionality Mode in Vista 5. Leave the Automatically activate Windows when I'm online box unchecked. 6. Click on Next .
7. Click on the No button for the Do you want to enter your product key now? prompt. (See screenshot below)
8. Select which edition of Vista you have. (See screenshot below) 9. Check the I have selected the edition of Windows that I purchased box and click on Next . (See screenshot below)
11. Follow any instructions left until Vista is through installing and has rebooted to the final welcome screen on the Vista desktop. 12. Remove the Vista installation DVD. 13. Check to see if any files are missing. If so look in the bolded files shown in step 14 below to see if they are in there. You can then just copy them back. 14. Run Disk Cleanup. NOTE: For how, see : How to Use Disk Cleanup in Vista
A) If listed, check Files discarded by Windows upgrade . (See screenshot below) NOTE: These will be the leftover upgrade files, C:\Windows.old , C:\$INPLACE.~TR and C:\$WINDOWS.~Q , that did not get copied over. If any personal username files are missing, it would be in these folders . B) Click on OK to delete it.
15. Now all you need to do is to activate Vista. NOTE: For how, see : How to Activate Vista Normally and by Phone Activation
A) Right click on Computer (Start Menu) and click on Properties, or open the Control Panel (Classic View) and click on the System icon. B) Scroll down a bit and click on: Activate Windows Now. (See screenshot below)

i have followed your guide as before in another post on system files, and was advised to do the repair install. Unfortunatley i cannot do that either, i get to copying files (50%) and then it stops and i receive a message saying that there are corrupt files and to ensure the correct files are available before trying again. Error code: 0x80070241. Now, if i can't repair off of the installation disc then i must have a serious problem which i would presume requires a clean install. Forgive me for asking but what is the best way for doing a clean install with vista already installed?

Hi Sean, That error may be a sign that your Vista installation DVD or hard drive may be bad or corrupted. It means that the files were not able to copy to the hard drive. Try booting from your Vista installation DVD and format the hard drive, then install Vista. If you have a Upgrade or Full version of Vista, this will show you how to do a clean install. Just an update, I removed 2 GB of RAM and manged to perform a repair install from within windows, took almost 4 hrs though, possibly would have been quicker to do a clean install and reload the software, I may still do a clean install as my system is very slow at the moment
