ABSTRACT Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are increasingly used in data-intensive applications such as micro-climate monitoring, precision agriculture,

and audio/video surveillance. A key challenge aced !y data-intensive WSNs is to transmit all the data generated within an application"s li etime to the !ase station despite the act that sensor nodes have limited power supplies. We propose using low-cost disposa!le mo!ile relays to reduce the energy consumption o data-intensive WSNs. #ur approach di ers rom previous work in two main aspects. $irst, it does not re%uire comple& motion planning o mo!ile nodes, so it can !e implemented on a num!er o low-cost mo!ile sensor plat orms. Second, we integrate the energy consumption due to !oth mo!ility and wireless transmissions into a holistic optimi'ation ramework. We present e icient distri!uted implementations or each algorithm that re%uire only limited, locali'ed synchroni'ation. (ecause we do not necessarily compute an optimal topology, our inal routing tree is not necessarily optimal. )owever, our simulation results show that our algorithms signi icantly outper orm the !est e&isting solutions. EXISTING SYSTEM Wireless *ultimedia Sensor Networks (W*SNs) has many challenges such as nature o wireless media and multimedia in ormation transmission. +onse%uently traditional mechanisms or network layers are no longer accepta!le or applica!le or these networks. PROPOSED SYSTEM We use low-cost disposa!le mo!ile relays to reduce the total energy consumption o data intensive WSNs. ,i erent rom mo!ile !ase station or data mules, mo!ile relays do not transport data- instead, they move to di erent locations and then remain stationary to orward data along the paths rom the sources to the !ase station. .hus, the communication delays can !e signi icantly reduced compared with using mo!ile sinks or data mules. *oreover, each mo!ile node per orms a single relocation unlike other approaches which re%uire repeated relocations.

Module Description: Mobile Rel !s: .he network consists o mo!ile relay nodes along with static !ase station and data sources. /elay nodes do not transport data- instead, they move to di erent locations to decrease the transmission costs. We use the mo!ile relay approach in this work. 0olden!erg et al. 1234 showed that an iterative mo!ility algorithm where each relay node moves to the midpoint o its neigh!ors converges on the optimal solution or a single routing path. )owever, they do not account or the cost o moving the relay nodes. 5n mo!ile nodes decide to move only when moving is !ene icial, !ut the only position considered is the midpoint o neigh!ors. Sin": .he sink is the point o contact or users o the sensor network. 6ach time the sink receives a %uestion rom a user, it irst translates the %uestion into multiple %ueries and then disseminates the %ueries to the corresponding mo!ile relay, which process the %ueries !ased on their data and return the %uery results to the sink. .he sink uni ies the %uery results rom multiple storage nodes into the inal answer and sends it !ack to the user. Source Nodes: .he source nodes in our pro!lem ormulation serve as storage points which cache the data gathered !y other nodes and periodically transmit to the sink, in response to user %ueries. Such a network architecture is consistent with the design o storagecentric sensor networks 1374. #ur pro!lem ormulation also considers the initial positions o nodes and the amount o data that needs to !e transmitted rom each storage node to the sink.

Tree Opti#i$ tion: We consider the su!pro!lem o inding the optimal positions o relay nodes or a routing tree given that the topology is i&ed. We assume the topology is a directed tree in which the leaves are sources and the root is the sink. We also assume that separate messages cannot !e compressed or merged- that is, i two distinct messages o lengths m2 and m8 use the same link (si, s9 ) on the path rom a source to a sink, the total num!er o !its that must traverse link (si, s9 ) is m2 : m8.
