201 Methods and Materials of Research

Homework no. 3 Dr. Soto

1. Predicting Academic success in Higher Education: Whats more important than being smart? Summary: This study is about as to what affects high grade in Higher Education. Through model and some combination of variables, it accurately predicts academic achievement that therefore introduces The Big Five Personality. It is composed of variables of self-descriptive statements that will help in determining how a person must excel. The findings support that personality is an important predictor of academic achievement in post-secondary school education. Intelligence still accounts but conscientiousness is the most consistent and strongest predictor of academic achievement. There were also the some other variables which were included in an exploratory basis but seemed to be necessary as part of it and through which these values may coincide relatively for the result they are aiming to materialize. Critique: As the study revealed that personality played an important factor in the success of many individual in post-secondary education, it did not specifically targeted a group of level of people that will make this model very effective. And if it does become effective, how can this model improved to be applicable to those whose personality do not excel? Does this mean that the reason for a large number of successful people belongs to those who have good personality and culture background? Therefore, we should explore and be challenged too on how to create a model that will benefit all. 2. Do honors students have more potential for excellence in their professional lives?

Summary: In this research, it is shown that grades alone do not sufficiently predict academic success. It is said that intelligence, motivation, and creativity are the most important predictors of academic success. More so, this was test to honors and non-honor students and how they differ with respect to the talent factor. It was found out that grades was only a predictive result of their stay in school but will not guarantee of a persons excellence in his field or competency at work. It was noted that honors students are significantly different from non-honors students in terms of the combined as well as separate variables with the exception of persistence. Also, some factors must be taken into consideration, like the non-honors student might not have himself included in

the honors program based on their lack of knowledge about the program or some other factors. Critique: As this research was done is a specific university, we cannot generalized the assumptions and validity of the model used in the research. Though the author was able to deliver his intentions for this study, it would be helpful not only for any institution but would have get ideas from such models that may help in predicting excellent professionals. Through this, students may be challenged and the academe can develop ways on how they can be of more help to those talents but lacks the persistence.

3. Qualities Honors Students Look For in Faculty and Courses, Revisited. Summary: The research is about the development of honors programs that would offer educational opportunities which are more challenging and demanding and would evoke excellence in talented students. It aims to create a learning context and assumes that these contexts are what honors students are looking for. The methods used were a pilot study and research that will explore differences that might exist for honors and non-honors. The overall study appeared that honors students are driven to achieve high grades not by career orientation but because they are interested in acquiring deeper, broader knowledge that will make them think critically not only academically but through mentoring relationship with their community of learning. Critique: Quality education will play its part in this kind of research. As the achievers seek what they want, it still will lead to the kinds of teachings and environment a school can offer. Schools can provide this as they work on their structures and the quality of the educators they have in their institution. But as they look for these factors that will help them, how will the school provide such demands?. Should it not be that the research must both seek the factors that students look for in their learning settings and influence? As well as what should be the qualifications of the faculty? I think to better address the needs of the honors students, there must also be a model that would guide for the selection of faculty and courses etc. 4. The Test Assessment of Questionnaire: A Tool for students self-assessment after the midterm exam. Summary: The paper is about students assessment through examinations to reflect their understanding of

material after their genuine attempt to learn it. A practical tool was introduced to students for benefits such as guiding students toward more self-awareness in their studies, as a part of assessment and assurance of learning efforts, requires minimal class time, and a no work burden on part of the instructor. The tool also tasked the students to scrutinize the questionnaire giving both the instructor and the students some time to briefly skim through the students answers. The content of the questionnaire were also discuss about targeting how the students prepare for the exams, how they analyze questions and why such questions were missed to encourage future research on the part of the students. In this way, they are given the chance to look at their performance in a critical way and improve their learning. Various self-awareness on type of questions were present on the test to distinguish their areas of difficulties. The test is concluded by asking the students about the grade they hope to earn and what strategies that should be used in reaching that goal. Critique: This type of assessment can be effective to honors student as they seek to know where they have gone wrong during the test. By providing such questionnaire, their critical mind may be triggered to analyze the test they took. The challenge here should be on how this kind of material be effective not only for the honors student but for the non-honors. How will they be motivated to be critical on the they they undertake.

5. The Benefits of Honors Education for All Students to College

Summary: It is about how the honors students infiltrate the general campus and the non-honors as they adapt themselves to the honors programs which are favorable to them. In this way, they become an influence to non-honors as they inspire, provoke or give curiosity that basically raises the intellectual stakes of all the students. Through the introduction of virtual education, honor students have been armed of diverse academic, methodological approaches and a variety of intellectual strategies which works with all the students. It was also stated that through this, education can exist beyond formal setting of classes, that students can own their education and set their stage of continuous learning.

Critique: Technology has been playing a big part in todays education. With this kind of trend, it can be

seen how the traditional education will be in the future. Though virtual education is good because of the access and numerous information it can provide, it should be taken into consideration how the future mind will work. As this can be a tool to help in learning, accuracy must be determined. Otherwise, how can be their learning gauged their competence if their interactions are limited in virtual education? Also, if honors may benefit others, how can this benefit them? If they can influence the non-honors, how can be this given to them in return? It will be an advantage as well as a disadvantage for both kinds of students.
