WELD IDENTIFICATION

12/31/06

HIS SECTION PROVIDES RECOMMENDED PRACTICES FOR IDENTIFYING welds for future reference and tracking in pipeline recordkeeping.

GENERAL

A welders identification number will be documented for each weld performed and placed in the project work order packet for future reference. When completing the entire weld, the welder identification number will be marked on the pipe beside the weld. When multiple welders complete a weld (brother-in-law technique), the pipe will be marked as shown in Figure 3.14.1, with each side of the pipe and each pass identifying the welder making that particular portion of the weld. As an alternative to marking the pipe, when only one welder is utilized on the entire project the welder identification shall be indicated in the notes included in the project packet. When multiple welders are utilized, documentation indicating the position of the weld may be referenced by the weld number and its GPS coordinates (see Documenting with Coordinate Locations in this procedure).
WELDER IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM FOR MULTIPLE WELDERS PIPE MARKING

A yellow paint marker should be used to print the welders identification number as shown.

If two welders complete the welding process on each weld, only one set of identification numbers is Figure 3.14.1: Welder Identification required. However, if the welders make different passes, more than one set of identification numbers is required. The markings will show the root pass on the lines closest to the weld, with remaining passes in order away from the weld. The top number will indicate the welder on that side of the pipe, with the bottom number referencing the opposite side of the pipe.

In this case, two welders were utilized for each pass on the weld. The number on the left identifies the welder on the ditch side of the easement; the second identifies the welder on the right-of-way side of the easement. For convenience, the welding inspector may identify the welder with a legend, indicating welder A, B, or C.
