horizontal shear reinforcement strain. Displacements at the midspan were measured. Two linear variable differential transducers were set up at the specimen ends to measure the slippage between the precast concrete I-girder and the concrete joint. Test results confirmed the validity of the design theory in flexure, shear, and composite action. Loov and Patnaiks 1994 equation produced values closest to actual failure loads compared with the more-conservative results of the LRFD equation, as shown in Table 6 and Fig. 14. The critical section for flexural capacity was at midspan. Horizontal shear failure occurred about 5 ft (1.5 m) from the support (Fig. 15), a result consistent with the theoretical critical section at 5.15 ft (1.57 m) from the support.

I-girder (Fig. 13). The corresponding haunch was precast in the lab and, unlike that in an actual bridge, was located above, rather than below, the I-girder. The specimen was simply supported at both ends, was loaded at its midpoint, and was designed to fail in horizontal shear. A total of 20 strain gauges were in-

stalled on the reinforcing steel and 4 strain gauges were installed on the concrete to measure the concrete strain at the compression block. Of the 20 strain gauges, 5 were installed to measure the bottom-flange longitudinal reinforcement strain, 6 were installed to measure the vertical shear reinforcement strain, and 9 were installed to measure the
