P RO C LA I M G O O D N E W S !
A Year Accep ptable to the Lord!

We take our focus for this NPM Convention from Jesus description of his own ministry (Luke 4:18). Called by the Spirit, using the talents we possess, we proclaim Good News to the poor, liberty to the captives, sight to the blind, freedom to the oppressed, and a year acceptable to the Lord. We do this through the gifts we have received and developed: our love for the Churchs liturgy and the communities that gather to sing Gods praise, skills in music and pastoral preparation for worship, talents in music education, and service in preaching and presiding. We come to St. Louis in the thirty-seventh year of such gatherings to celebrate, to learn, and to re-dedicate ourselves to our shared ministry so that the coming yearand every ye ar in wh ic h we m inist e r in the power of the Sp irit m a y be acceptable to the Lord.

PLENUM S CLAIM YOUR ART, PROCLAIM GOOD NEWS

PAUL WESTERMEYER

9:00 - 10:00 AM

Pastoral musicians are artists and preachers. Our lives are transformed through the art of music and liturgy, and we become sacraments of the encounter with Jesus Christ. As artists, we need passion: We need to lose ourselves in our art. What kind of time and energy does that require? For if we are to minister, we must claim our art and feed our artists soul. Dr. Paul Westermeyer is professor of Church Music at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he also serves as Cantor for the Seminary community and administers the Master of Sacred Music Program. A musician and pastor, he is the 2014 recipient of NPMs Jubilate Deo Award.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 16 Wednesday, July 16 . . . . is Deacon Day!

The ministr y of deacons, especially permanent deacons, has grown throughout the past three decades. The day includes the plenum talk, two workshops designed for you and led by Deacon William Ditewig, prayer, evening events, and attendance in the exhibit hall. While we hope high school and college age youth will choose to attend the entire St. Louis Convention, Wednesday is designed especially for those who can only join us on one day. With youth only workshops and evening events that include a performance by a choir made up of students from St. Louis Catholic high schools and a contemporary concert led by Ed Bolduc, this day is an opportunity to join other young people involved in liturgical music ministry. Come and bring a friend!

Wednesday, July 16 . . . . is T-Shirt Day!

Proclaim Good News is the invitation from this years Convention not only to NPM members but from us to the whole world. T-Shirt Day at the convention gives us a chance to proclaim that message in a unified way to each other and to those who might see us at the hotels and on our way to the evening events. Be sure to order your T-shirt in advance by checking the proper box on the registration form.

PLENUM S EMBRACING GOOD NEWS: THE CALL TO CONVERSION

ANN GARRIDO

9:00 - 10:00 AM

For forty years, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults has taught us what conversion means, and it has shown us that if we are to foster conversion in others, we must experience and live it ourselves. Authentic conversion requires that we become disciples rst and then ministers; discipleship requires conversion of heart. Out of our own experience, how do we invite others to discover the Mystery at the center of life? Hear what Dr. Ann Garridocatechist, theologian, and associate professor of homiletics at Aquinas Institutehas to say.

PLENUM S VATICAN II AND THE CHURCH AS BEARER OF GOOD NEWS

10:45 - 11:45 AM

HONORA WERNER, OP

9:00 - 10:00 AM

Vatican II gave us an image and a mandate for being Church. Original excitement over that vision has given way in recent years to tension over interpreting what Vatican II means. With advanced degrees in music, scripture, theology, and preaching, Sister Honora Werner, op takes a clear-eyed look at what the Council says about who we are as a Christian people and as leaders of worship, especially in the documents Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes. How does the unfolding of the Councils mandate call us to be bearers of the Good News of the Gospel?

At the heart of the convention is our gathering for a festive and solemn celebration of the Eucharist. Join the convention community as we gather around the Tables of Word and Sacrament under the leadership of Archbishop Robert J. Carlson. We gather as Pope Francis reminds us in Evangelii Gaudium: In union with Jesus, we seek what he seeks, and we love what he loves. In the end, what we are seeking is the glory of the Father; we live and act for the praise of his glorious grace (Ephesians 1:6). Nourished by this union, we go forth to Proclaim Good News to a hungry and thirsty world.

FRIDAY CONVENTION CLOSING

Plenum Closing Event

GO AND PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD
MSGR. RAY EAST
Saint Augustine said that liturgy makes the Church, and the Church makes liturgy. The document Sing to the Lord tells us that liturgy and its music shape a Church where charity, justice, and evangelization are the normal consequences of liturgical celebration, a Church that leads men and women to the faith, freedom, and peace of Christ by the example of its life and teaching. Liturgical ministry is pastoral: It shapes the community. The texts we sing are subversive of the worlds expectations. Pastoral musicians, then, are preachers and spiritual directors. Go and challenge the Church to proclaim the Gospel.

11:15 am

Msgr. Ray East is pastor of St. Therese of Avila Parish in Southwest Washington, DC. Preacher, musician and NPM member, Fr. Ray has worked in Liturgy, Youth Ministry, and Evangelization ministries.

CONVENTION CLOSING AND RE-COMMISSIONING

We go forth rededicated to ministry, singing Gods Spirit, to preach Gospel hope by our presence in the world.

If you...
...are a pastoral musician who wants to gather with other people who share your ministry, come to St. Louis. ...are a director of music ministries and you want to deepen your own understanding of the seasons while nding tools to pull everything together for the glory of God, come to St. Louis. ...are a psalmist and cantor who wants to deepen your understanding of the Scriptures and polish your proclamation skills, come to St. Louis. ...are a bishop, priest, deacon, or seminarian who wants to enrich your understanding and practice of the ars celebrandi, come to St. Louis. ...are a choir director or ensemble leader who wants to improve the blending of voices to support the congregation and enrich the celebration, come to St. Louis. ...are an organist or keyboardist or guitarist, or if you play another instrument looking for ways to add variety and colorful dimensions to the song of the assembly, come to St. Louis. ...are a young pastoral musician who needs to learn basic skills, or to develop advanced skills, and you want to do it in a friendly and trusted environment with other young musicians, come to St. Louis. ...are a music educator who recognizes that all music ministry is music education, but good music ministry needs a solid grounding in musical training, come to St. Louis. ...are any of these people who needs time away in a retreat environment lled with prayer, lled with music, lled with the support of other ministers, come to St. Louis. ...believe, as the bishops teach us in Sing to the Lord, that God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song and that music is a way for God to lead us to the realm of higher things; if you believe that the Paschal hymn...leads us through the church doors to the whole world, with its joys and hopes, griefs and anxieties, come to St. Louis.

Well look for you in St. Louis!
