AS BILLED
iPAD AIR IS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED
22
The iPad Air has goten of to a fast start,
and that could mean that it may be an iPad
Christmas afer all.
Apple CEO Tim Cook made that bold statement
during an earnings call late last month, essentally
saying the company was expectng large sales
from its new iPad, and it seems he may be right.
Mobile app marketng tech frm Fiksu said that
apps that use its platorm are detectng nearly
fve tmes as many
iPad Air devices three
days afer the tablet went on
sale as they did when the fourth-
generaton iPad launched last year.
The iPad Air went on sale Nov. 1, and three
days later, it is making up 0.7% of the trafc
received by apps that use Fiksus technology,
which receives trafc from millions of iPad
tablets. By comparison, the fourth-generaton
iPAD AIR OFF TO FAST START, COULD BE
FAR MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN iPAD 4
6
iPad accounted for only 0.15% of trafc three
days afer it went on sale last year.
The new, ffh-generaton iPad Air is also
outpacing the iPad minis 2012 release. Three
days afer its release, the iPad mini accounted for
only 0.21% of iPad trafc.
This could mean large sales of the iPad Air for
Apple, said Craig Palli, Fiksus chief strategy
ofcer.
These numbers suggest that Apple hit their
audiences need perfectly, Palli said. And
as a result of that, youre seeing a far
faster uptake of this device than
previous iPads.
Currently, most iPad trafc
on Fiksus network comes
from the iPad 2, which was
released in 2011 and is stll
sold to this day. The iPad 2
accounts for nearly 38% of Fiksus
iPad trafc.
But the iPad Air is the frst version of the
iPad to feature a drastcally diferent design
than that of the iPad 2. If Apple can leverage
some of its original iPad 2 owners to upgrade
to the iPad Air, the company could see great
iPad sales numbers.

Holy crystal ball, Batman. The future is here
and helping our furry friends fnd their way
back home. Thanks to a new facial recogniton
technology-based iPhone app released on
November 5, lost pets can now be found with
a few clicks on a mobile phone.
Heres how PiP (which stands for Positve
Identfcaton of Pet) works: Human family
members upload a variety of photos of their
dog and or cat or both, supply a few details
of same, like breed, height, weight, and
distnguishing features, and then presto!
Youre on board should anyone go missing.
At this point the app, which has been
uploaded to your iPhone, will send out
a sort of Amber alert for pets to all PiP
subscribers in the immediate area as well
as to vets and to animal shelters. In no
time at all, (wo)man and beast will be
reunited.
All this is possible because of a computer-
based matching system. The sofware
identfes unique features of all kinds of
pets whose photos are then featured. This
system then cross-references those sweet
beasts to make the right match. The results
10
produced are said to come along a lot faster
than a microchip and as an added bonus,
they are not nearly as invasive.
With this miracle in mind, facial recogniton
-- while stll in its infancy stages -- is by no
means a brand new concept.
On a massive (and some say chilling and,
yes, even privacy-invading) scope, the FBI
has allegedly been using this tech inventon
for years. Meanwhile, on a smaller, more
intmate (and many say happy) scope,
digital cameras use the same technology to
determine how to focus on the human and
or animal in a picture that ofen consists of
many other elements.
That said, facial recogniton has been used
to fnd whales that have lost their way,
to help the law fnd the bad guys, and in
airports to be sure that the right people are
in the right place at the tme theyre pacing
around these public places.
Then theres Apples iPhoto with its Faces
sofware. This partcular product asks for
users to associate names to faces depicted
in their photographs. Like on Facebook
these days, the sofware then proposes
11
12
other matching faces from the photo library
and gradually refnes its recogniton,
according to the users acceptance, denial
or renaming of the proposed face.
Because of recently introduced
computer graphics and computer vision
techniques that take in such particulars
as lighting and different facial angles, a
more accurate use of facial recognition
technology has prevailed.
As a result, new uses for this magical kind
of technological recogniton will likely be
put into practce post haste. A lot of that
will have to do with security much as the
iPhone 5s uses touch sensors using your
unique fngerprints to keep anyone else but
you from using your mobile apparatus.
No doubt, the ATM market is ripe for this
kind of technology, too, since your facial
image can be the key to getng into your
bank accounts database. Indeed, not too
many criminals are going to go to ultra
great lengths of preposterous proportons
-- like, say, taking the tme and paying the
price to undergo plastc surgery -- in order
to try to confscate your funds. So, this
concept is likely sound as your face turns
into your password.
Another use for facial recogniton
technology could help those aficted
with prospagnosia -- or face blindness.
Some of these folks, like actor Brad Pit,
have trouble recognizing human faces of
people they otherwise know. A small unit
with the ability to assist would be greatly
appreciated when used to take over where
a persons brain has stopped functoning in
that capacity.
Other kinds of recognition efforts have
been useful for a long time in our world,
making it better for many people.
Whether it is speech or audio or motion
Photo: Dado Ruvic
13
or visual recognition that is needed, our
mobile phones and computers have come
to the rescue.
For instance, dont discount Siri. She
has been answering your questions for a
while now and is somewhat of a celebrity
in her own right. Then theres Evernote,
an app that simultaneously turns
handwriting into text. And, of course,
Shazams ability for song recognition has
saved plenty of us many a restless night
trying to figure out where we heard a
certain tune and how can we hear it again
if we dont know what its called.
With all this in mind, its back to the most
current use of recogniton technology, taken
at, well, face value. Actually, at this point
facial recogniton technology doesnt always
work as weve sadly seen last week in light
of the tragedy at Los Angeles Internatonal
Airport (LAX) when a security agent was
taken down.
However, perhaps the right implements
werent in place in this massive California
transportaton hub like they are in a more
equipped airport like Panamas Tocumen
Internatonal.
There an all-encompassing surveillance
system takes advantage of literally hundreds
of facial recogniton cameras and, in turn,
these cameras are used to identfy any
unsavory (read: not law abiding) persons
atemptng to make their way through
Panamas largest airport.
One a happier note, police have found facial
recogniton programs to be great as backup
members of their teams.
For instance, at the 2001 Super Bowl,
Tampa Bay police reportedly used this kind
of sofware on their devices to see if any
potental terrorists or other lawbreakers
14

15
16
17
were lurking around the festvites held in
Florida. More than a dozen citzens with
at least some kind of criminal record were
reportedly located through this source.
And then, again, there is the new PiP app
for iPhone, released today and ready to fnd
your furry family member should any of
these friendly beasts go missing. Now thats
a good thing, and something any dog or cat
owner should be happy to have on hand to
help in the case of an emergency.
So, in closing, know that when someone
is told to make a face, dont automatcally
expect that person to come out with a
funny expression in which he or she will,
say, be stcking out a tongue, Miley Cyrus
style. Rather, expect a more futuristc
vision that has something to do with facial
recogniton technology. Thats the future
and its here, so ... just face it!

Shares of Corning Inc. slid on Tuesday afer GT
Advanced Technologies Inc. announced that
it signed a deal with Apple Inc. for sapphire
material. The supply agreement worried investors
that the iPhone maker will replace Cornings
Gorilla Glass with sapphire for its gadget screens.
GT Advanceds shares soared. The company
said Monday that it signed a mult-year deal
supply with Cupertno, Calif.-based Apple for the
material, which it will produce at an Apple facility
in Arizona. GT expects revenue next year of $600
million and $800 million, with up to 80 percent of
sales coming from its sapphire segment.
Sterne Agee analyst Andrew Huang said the deal
increases the likelihood that Apple will replace
Gorilla Glass with sapphire, which would be a
marginal negatve for Corning. He noted that
Corning supplies Gorilla Glass for many other
phone, tablet and notebook computer makers
besides Apple.
Corning spokesman Daniel Collins declined to
comment on the Apple-GT deal, but he said
that we do not believe that sapphire will gain a
signifcant volume of the cover glass market.
Sapphire weighs more than Gorilla Glass,
about 1.6 tmes more and there are signifcant
questons if it can be produced at the thinness
necessary to compete with glass, Collins added
in an email. Our testng has shown that once
sapphire is damaged, it is much more susceptble
to breakage than Gorilla Glass.
Apple and GT declined to comment.

I think I have a fairly good system going.
Every year I get a new Apple device. Or at
least Im working into a good system. Last
year I ended up getng two new Apple
devices both the iPhone 5 and the third
generaton iPad. Who expected them to
release yet another one later in the year?
Now afer waitng a year, I have bought my
next device, the iPad Air. This means next
year Ill be open to getng the next iPhone
iPhone 6 or iPhone 5z, whatever they
determine in the next year. Who knows?
Maybe theyll start naming the phones afer
California water foul or something.
Luckily, I didnt have to brave the long lines
to get my new device. Not that I ever have
anyway. I always order online, but this
usually means everyone else has one before
me. I ordered online again, and this tme
there was no long lag tme. I ordered Friday
morning, and it was delivered by Monday
morning. Whatever Apple did to improve
their delivery tmes is appreciated.
While covering the event where the iPad
Air was announced, I notced, as did many
other journalists, that there really wasnt
much new about the iPad Air other than
... the weight, size, and speed. Once I
unpacked the iPad Air and started using it,
I found the same thing. Thats really the
only new things to the iPad, other than the
name. But really, what else do we need?
I dont need a bunch of fancy bells and
whistles. I just want it to work, work well,
and work quickly, and that it does.
Well start out with the size of the iPad Air.
Dimension-wise, its just a litle smaller
than the third generaton iPad. I can tell
this by how it fts in the collecton of iPad
covers and cases that I have. Yes, it stll fts,
but its not a cozy ft. I want my iPad to
be more secure in its cover or case. I want
to know that its safe. The iPad Air fts, but
24
25
theres a litle extra room, meaning part of
the viewing area falls slightly below some
covers, and it slips and slides just a litle bit.
It looks like Ill be needing an iPad Air cover.
However, when I frst glanced at the iPad
Air, the slimness of the device, as well as the
larger viewing area thanks to a bezel that is
much decreased in size, made it seem as if it
was a much smaller device. Its not. Its just
an illusion thanks to the other changes.
Do you notce the smaller bezel outright?
Not really. Its a big change that you dont
really notce untl you combine it with
all the other changes. Watching videos
or viewing pictures on Facebook and
Instagram doesnt have me thanking Apple
for decreasing the size of the bezel. Its just
notceable to that point.
The same cannot be said for the weight and
thinness. These are defnitely notceable.
It is very light and thin. I wouldnt go as far
as to say it feels like air, but its defnitely
a notceable weight and thickness level
from the third generaton. Its defnitely
something you can hold in one hand. Then
again, if youre big on typing and use a
26
separate keyboard, that doesnt mater as
much. But if youre like my sister and use
your iPad as a camera, its light and thin
enough to be held up for this type of use.
I didnt notce much of a diference when I
had it packed up and carried it in my tote,
but thats because the weight of the bag
isnt the iPad; its all the other items Im
carrying around.
And the other great change is in the
speed. This, too, is very notceable. My
third generaton iPad seemed really quick;
although I dont remember it being that
much faster than my second generaton. But
for the past six months or so, Ive notced
that the third generaton has been slowing
down. The queston was if it was truly
slowing down itself or whether it just wasnt
handling the tasks with the same amount of
speed. I assumed it was the later.
There is no more lag tme. None. I havent
found any at all using the iPad Air. One of
the biggest annoyances using the third
generaton iPad was YouTube videos. Quite
ofen they would stall out on me. It would
sometmes be because of bufering, but
27
ofen it would be because the viewing
tme was faster than the download speed.
Id have to keep waitng and waitng and
waitng. This is no longer the case with the
iPad Air. It doesnt stall out at all.
Web pages load much faster on Safari as
well. There is no more waitng, no mater
what type of site I am opening up. I dont
feel like Im getng ahead anymore. And
this is true for browsers or apps that can
browse, such as Facebook or Knowtes.
These apps now browse just as fast as you
do. The only thing holding you back now is
the speed of your WiFi.
Where Im really notcing the diference is
with email atachments. Instead of them
downloading with the speed of 1.1, 1.3, 1.4,
1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.1, etc., it now loads like 1.4,
2.6, 3.3, 4.2, 5.4, 6.7, etc. Using the A7 chip
inside the device makes a huge diference,
and its so much appreciated to not have to
sit and wait for it to download.
28
29
30
31
32
Sure, Im on this yearly buying cycle, so I
would have bought a new iPad regardless
of the new features. But the one solitary
diference that makes my $599 (I bought
the 32 GB) worth it is the speed. I always
say, Patence isnt my virtue. That old
expression for patence just doesnt hold
true in my case. I do not like to wait and
start to go crazy when I do. With the iPad
Air, I dont have to wait.
Apples tagline for the iPad Air is Power of
Lightness. Thats defnitely everything you
need to know about the device, although
I would replace the of with and. It has
power, and it has lightness, and thats what
makes it worth the $499 minimum price.

Avril Lavigne
Avril Lavigne
Despite this being Canadian Aril Lavignes
ffth studio album, its the frst to bear her
name as the title. In the process of creating
the record, she explained that while her
previous album, Goodbye Lullaby, was
more mellow, the next one will be pop
and more fun again. The frst two singles
released for the album, Heres to Never
Growing Up and Rock n Roll defnitely
take fans back to the early days, reminiscent
of Girlfriend and Complicated.
FIVE FACTS:
1. Lavigne at one time considered
releasing two albums back-to-back
because of the number of songs she had
written.
2. Chad Kroeger, the lead vocalist for
Nickelback and Lavignes husband,
collaborated with her as a writer and producer
and also recorded Let Me Go with her.
3. The track 17 is a continuation of
Lavignes debut single Let Go.
4. Lavigne wrote Bad Girl and thought
Marilyn Mansons voice would be perfect
on it, so she approached him about
recording together, and he agreed.
5. Lavigne also has an acting career and is a
successful fashion designer under her label
Abbey Dawn.

The Marshall
Mathers LP 2
Eminem
Although released thirteen years later,
this album is meant to be the followup
to The Marshall Mathers LP. It has
already seen the release of four singles
Berzerk,Survival,Rap God, and The
Monster. Eminem counts on the vocal talents
of Skylar Grey, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, and
Nate Ruess to help out on four separate songs.
The question remaining is if there will be a
part three and if well have to wait another
thirteen years to see its release.
FIVE FACTS:
1. Eminem realized there would be
certain expectations with the album
title, but for him its not necessarily a
sequel as much as it is a revisitation.
2. The rapper believes he worked harder than
Ive ever worked in my life on this album.
3. The album has been included on many
Most Anticipated Albums of 2013 lists.
4. The Rap God instrumental had been
ofered to other rappers such as T.I., but
it wasnt where the producer heard this
record going.
5. After recording The Monster, writer
Bebe Rexha stood in the booth and said,
This is an Eminem record, yall.

Kelly Clarkson
Newly-married Kelly Clarkson releases her
sixth studio album, a Christmas-themed
compilation that consists of a mix of
classics and original music. The originals
in the release are right up there with the
rest of the pop stars hits, while the classics
are reminiscent of the original American
Idols repertoire during her stint on the
frst season of the iconic reality show. She
collaborates on Silent Night with Trisha
Yearwood and Reba, her stepmother-in-law.
FIVE FACTS:
1. Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooneys
soundtrack for the flm White Christmas
and the 2003 flm Love Actually are
Clarksons inspirations for the album.
2. The music on the album represents an
exploration of diferent genres of pop music
jazz, country, and Memphis soul, as well as an
overall lyrical theme of the color red.
3. Clarkson enjoyed not being pigeon-
holed as country, pop, or rock, as with
a Christmas album there are not
limitations.
4. The pop star provided all her own
background vocals on the album.
5. To promote the album, Clarkson has flmed
a Christmas television special at The Venetian
in Las Vegas, Kelly Clarksons (Cautionary)
Christmas Tale, to be aired on December 11.

Drinks After Work
Toby Keith
Whats it gonna hurt to have a little drink
after work? Thats what Toby Keith asks
in the title track of his seventeenth studio
album. The lyrics are fairly vague, leaving
it up to us whether were imagining a
man and a woman meeting up after
work instead of going home to their
better halves. While this song is a bit of a
departure for the country artist, the rest of
the album, other than a Sammy Hagar duet
to Margaritaville, is flled with what weve
come to expect from Keith, including the
patriotic Call a Marine.
FIVE FACTS:
1. Keiths debut single, Shouldve Been a
Cowboy, is the most played county song
of the 1990s.
2. Toby Keith-written songs have been played
on the radio more than ffty million times.
3. Drinks After Work became the lead
single of the album when Keith was
rushed to put something out after the
Oklahoma tornadoes.
4. The Sammy Hagar duet is also on the
rockers new album, Sammy Hagar & Friends.
5. The album is dedicated to Chuck Gof,
the bass player for Keith who died last
February and is also immortalized in the song,
Chuckies Gone.

9 STEPS TO INSTAGRAM YOUR BUSINESS
68
From social media start-up to coveted Facebook
acquisiton, photo-sharing app Instagram
celebrates its third birthday this month. Some
of the worlds largest brands count themselves
among its 130 million users. Now its tme for
smaller businesses to get snapping. Fleres how to
make it work...
isual marketng is the trenddu-jour for 2013.
This is because pictures appeal to emotons and
strike a chord with consumers across diferent
languages and cultures (on Facebook, photo
posts are thought to increase interacton rates
by 39 per cent). So, unless your products are, by
their nature, visually striking - bespoke wedding
dresses, for example, or perhaps highly elaborate
celebraton cakes - simple product shots making
up an online catalogue wont sufce. You must
make users-come-customers feel something.
How? Read on to fnd out what our experts
think...
1 EXPLOIT THE TRIEDAND-TESTED
Theres nothing wrong with using new technology
to execute old tricks - one of those old tricks
being the classic before-and-afer ruse. If your
business has anything to do with improvement
or renovaton - landscape gardening, beauty
therapy, car restoraton, interior design and so
on - then this is a truly efectve way to showcase
your work.
2 GET YOUR CUSTOMERS INVOLVED
Your company Instagram page needs to grow
organically and interacton is the key. Spanish
hotel chain NH Hoteles uses the hashtag
#wakeuppic to curate photos taken by users of
their hotel-room views in beautful locatons as
soon as they wake up - an efectve way to str
the travel bug in anyone. Meanwhile, luxury
69
fashion retailer Bergdorf Goodman, using the
tag #bgshoes, aggregates its Manhatan-based
customers Instagram photos of their favourite
footwear on an interactve map, under the Shoes
About Town campaign. In both these examples,
the companies beneft from the fact that social
media users like to show of online.
3 DONT BE SCARED OF BEING UNSEXY
Its only a lucky few businesses that ooze cool
factor, so dont be shy about the quotdian nature
of your enterprise. Take the Copenhagen-based
shipping company Maersk Line, for example.
It shares images of its freight ships in exotc
locatons and ports all over the globe, as well
as archive photos that showcase the brand
heritage. Because we are a classic B2B brand,
some people just thought of us as another
boring, big company, says Jonathan Wichmann,
who manages the frms Instagram account.
[Instagram] has allowed us to transform our
image into something much more interestng.
Maersk now has 22,500 followers, all of whom
are encouraged to submit their own sightngs of
the shipping lines vessels.
4 DONT STICK TO STATIC
Instagram has recently become a multmedia
platorm, with users now able to upload
15second video clips (which is over twice the
length allowed on Twiters equivalent, Vine).
Burberry has seized on this facility by uploading
highlights of fashion shows featuring its latest
collectons. You can also consider uploading
customer testmonials or behind-the-scene peeks
at your business actvites or product demos,
which help your customers overcome tricky
problems. They could even ask you for specifc
demos or explanatons via your other social-
networking sites.
70
5 USE HASHTAGS EFFECTIVELY
Prefxing your username with the now
ubiquitous will lead relevant users, interested
in your material, straight to it with a single
photo search. Meanwhile, hashtagging key
words - Our latest #bridalwear range #oxford,
for example - will draw users with specifc
subject interests, or those in specifc places.
Hashtag tools such as TagsForLikes will give
you a wealth of potental theme tags to choose
from and increase your reach.
6 GO CROSSPLATFORM
The programmers at Instagram have clearly
worked hard to make integratng your campaigns
on Facebook, Twiter, Tumblr, Google+ and the
like extremely intuitve and easy. You want to
reach your entre online community, and the
majority of them havent got around to Instagram
- at least, not yet.
7 EMBRACE THE THREE PS
Thats pilfer, pinch and plagiarise. How
Instagram can be used efectvely for marketng
purposes is not intellectual property. Take a
look at the brand page Instagram has provided
(business.instagram.com/blog), partcularly at the
endeavours of businesses similar to yours, and try
out approaches that you think will work for your
enterprise.
8 ANALYSE, ANALYSE, ANALYSE
Naturally you will want to track how
your brand is performing on the platorm
and how it resonates with existng and
potental customers. Tracking an accounts
Instagram stats is the best way to know
that its sharing the right content and that
its reaching and engaging with the right
audience. With that in mind, knowing more
71
about an accounts followers is the frst
step to efectve communicaton through
Instagram, Gabriel Hubert, co-founder and
chief executve at Nitrogram, told media
agency Our Social Times.
Nitrogram is an Instagram analytcs and
marketng platorm. It allows its customers to
track specifc accounts and hashtags through
a browser-based dashboard. Followers
stats should be coupled with analysing the
interactons generated by the accounts shared
photos. Brands can use a trial-and-error
approach to their sharing on Instagram, aiming
to post more engaging photos while avoiding
72
posts that followers would judge to be dull,
Hubert contnued.
9 MEASURE UP
In order to measure their communitys actvity,
brands can track Instagram hashtags: the volume
of photos shared, and the number of likes and
comments they generated, says Hubert. The
same principle is used to track campaign actvity
and provide informaton on how many users
entered a competton and their locaton.

Amid all of the hubbub about the latest
ffh-generaton iPad, this tme given the
ttle of iPad Air, another product move
didnt go unnotced by many industry
observers: Apples decision to contnue
selling the iPad 2 alongside it.
This isnt necessarily a massive shock to
anyone with even the most cursory familiarity
with Apples sales strategy. It is very much the
custom for it to ofer the older generaton
version of each of its mobile devices. What
was long the case for the iPhone, and then
the iPad, has now become the case with the
iPad Mini and the iPad Air.
In theory, the business case for doing this
is all very simple. Apples compettors have
brought out a slew of 10-inch tablets to
compete with the iPad since the original
iteraton blew the tablet world apart on its
release in 2010. By stll ofering the iPad 2
for $399, Apple is giving customers unable
to aford the $500 iPad Air a route into the
full-sized tablet iOS experience.
WHY THE iPAD 2 IS THE BUDGET
OPTION
But why is it the iPad 2, in partcular, that
the company has chosen as its lower-cost
ofering? This, afer all, is an antquated
device by the standards of the California
frms current product range, having been
launched in March 2011. Even compared
to the new iPad Mini with Retna Display,
which is available for the same price, its
specifcatons are anaemic.
Plus, those really determined to cut costs
for a new iPad always have the opton of
the $299 previous generaton iPad Mini. So,
how is Apple making the business case for
the iPad 2 remaining on sale - especially for
that price?
77
One might have thought, afer all, that the
immediate previous generaton iPad to
the iPad Air would have made more sense.
However, one has to consider the factors of
cost and consistency as well as the kind of
people who might actually buy an iPad 2 now.
TEMPTINGTHOSE NEW
CUSTOMERS... AND KEEPING THEM
Lets face it... not everyone is as well-versed
in the world of tablets as the average
AppleMagazine reader. For many people,
tablets are prety scary - and for those
people, older means simpler, as well as
cheaper. The lower cost iPad 2 is likely to
draw in those punters who might have
never owned an Apple device before - and
Apples betng onthem staying with the
Cupertno frms ecosystem once they dip
their toes in the water.
For these newcomers, all of the features
of iPad 2 are barely any less atractve than
they were to us Apple veterans on launch
78
day. It even runs the latest iOS 7 platorm,
even if its A5 chip does struggle slightly on
that front. But when a person is buying a
tablet for the frst tme, very ofen they just
want something that browses the web and
accesses email relatvely quickly, in additon
to playing a few games and videos.
Apply the 80/20 rule on the tasks that your
tablet can perform, and the iPad 2 stll has
litle problem with that 80 percent. Its a
comfortable, reassuring entrance into the
world of tablets. But more than that, its
pricing is a great way to tempt customers
into paying for the higher-specifcaton
models. They might be tempted to shell
out the same amount of money for that
aforementoned iPad Mini with a smart
cover or more memory, or the latest iPad
Mini with Retna Display. For a mere extra
$100, they could have an iPad Air.
So temptng are these price margins, that
many of those initally considering an iPad
2 may not ever make that purchase, instead
optng for a higher-specifcaton model -
79
80
even if it was the older 10-inch tablet that
had tempted them in.
THERES STILL MONEY TO BE MADE
ON THE iPAD 2
Even if said customer stll opts for the iPad
2, Apple can contnue enjoying healthy
margins from the device with it priced at
$399. The iPad 2 is always going to be much
cheaper to produce these days than the
iPad 4, given that it has a less expensive A5
chip, cheaper cameras, half as much RAM,
no LTE and no Retna Display. The batery
isnt as big as that of the iPad 3 or 4, the
recharge tmes are shorter, and the body
isnt as thick.
Theres another factor, though; the iPad
2 stll sells fairly well. Thats the discovery
of new research by Consumer Intelligence
Research Partners which found that in the
September quarter, some 22 percent of
iPads sold were stll iPad 2s. Thats not much
compared to the 35 percent recorded for the
second quarter of 2013 or the 33 percent
sold during the frst quarter. Nonetheless,
demand for this full-size iPad at a cheaper
price remains steady, partcularly among the
educatonal sector, which may stll need a
device with the older 30-pin connector.
CIRP Partner and Co-Founder Josh Lowitz
commented, Despite this quarter
including back-to-school sales, the iPad 2,
which accounted for a third of sales for the
prior six months, seems to have started
to show some age, afer several strong
quarters. Yet, the iPad Mini contnued its
relatve share in the past few quarters, as
customers seem to contnue to like it as a
low-price tablet alternatve.
81
82
83
ITS HARD TO RESIST THOSE NEWER
MODELS
But of course, the big sales in that quarter
were stll reserved for the then range-
topping fourth generaton iPad which
made up some 46 percent of total US sales,
leaving 32 percent of sales to be scooped
up by the iPad Mini. It shows that while
Apple wants to make an iPad 2 a temptng
purchase, it would ultmately prefer that
you buy its newer products. With a price
that falls just short of making it a superior
choice to the latest version in most cases,
would you really want an iPad 2?
For many, the iPad Airs extra performance
and features, for not that much more
money, make it difcult to respond to that
queston with a yes.Buy an iPad 2 and
you have to accept going back in tme a
litle which is difcult to do when a brand
new iPad Mini with Retna Display and A7
chip can be yours for the same price. The
iPad 2s A5 processor only has about half of
the speed of the fourth generaton iPads
A6X chip, so you can probably imagine how
much slicker the new A7 feels.
Choosing a new iPad 2 also means going
without Siri, which features on the iPad
Mini, and there is also no support for
AirDrop, which enables the easy sharing
of images and videos with other nearby
iDevices. For many people, thats probably
too far back in tme to tread, given the
iPad 2s price, and one can probably
imagine a steep fall in iPad 2 sales over the
coming quarters.
Could those sales maintain their
surprisingly longstanding stability? That
remains to be seen, but one things for
sure: a $399 iPad 2 defnitely stll makes
business sense for Apple.

to learn about users interests so it can provide
helpful tps without promptng.
Helpouts is meant to fll the gaps in Googles
search engine, which sometmes delivers
unsatsfactory results because the answers
being sought arent available on a website, said
Udi Manber, a Google executve overseeing the
new service.
Sometmes, you need someone to look over
your shoulder. Sometmes you need someone to
show you the way, Manber said.
For starters, Helpouts is ofering to connect
people with experts in eight diferent
categories: art and music; computers and
87
88
electronics; cooking; educaton and careers;
fashion and beauty; ftness and nutriton;
health; and home and garden.
The fees will be set by each expert, with 20
percent of the revenue going to Google for most
video chats. For now, the Mountain View, Calif.,
company isnt collectng a commission for health
advice. Experts can charge a fat-fee per session
or by the minute. If the advice is unsatsfactory,
Google is promising to refund the money.
A Helpouts applicaton is being ofered for
smartphones running on Googles Android
sofware. The service isnt yet available for Apple
Inc.s iPhone or other mobile devices running on
diferent sofware.
Besides opening up a source of new revenue
for Google, Helpouts could give more people
a reason to set up a profle on the companys
social network, Google Plus. Thats because a
Google Plus account is required to seek advice
on Helpouts. The company says it currently has
about 540 million actve Google Plus users.
Helpouts is similar to several other online services
that already provide connectons to experts in
various felds. Pearl.com, a San Francisco startup
formerly known as JustAnswer.com, also sells
one-on-one online sessions on a wide variety of
subjects. HealthTap dispenses medical advice
and RocketLawyer specializes in legal maters.
Googles new service also may end up competng
with the companys own YouTube video site,
which ofers a wide array of how-to clips for free.
This isnt the frst tme that Google has tried to
supplement its search engine with the knowledge
of human experts. The company also once ran a
service that hired researchers to feld questons
about homework and other subjects. That
service, which charged anywhere from $2 to
$200 per queston, closed down seven years ago.

Target is ofering at least $200 in store credit to
customers who trade in any undamaged iPad, no
mater how old, an atenton-getng promoton
that coincides with Apple Inc.s release of a new
full-sized iPad and an iPad price cut by rival Wal-
Mart Stores Inc.
The ofer was disclosed on the Minneapolis-
based retailers website and in advertsing
circulars this week.
At Target stores that sell mobile devices,
employees will appraise the value of
individual iPads and issue a $200 minimum
promotonal credit on a Target gif card that
can be redeemed at any Target store. To be
eligible for trade in, the iPad must power on
and the screen must not be scratched, Target
said on its website.
The ofer extends to the frst-generaton iPad,
which went on sale in 2010, and typically nets
a consumer about $65 in a trade-in at other
electronics websites and resellers.
A person who applies the $200 to the newest
entry-level iPad, the iPad Air Wi-Fi model with
16 gigabytes of storage, could buy the device for
$279, down from its listed price of $479.
Both Target and Apple were forced to match Wal-
Marts decision to sell the entry-level iPad at $479
on Friday, the day it was released. Apple had set
the list price at $499.
Wal-Mart on Friday also pulled forward
by several weeks discounts on other
tablets and TVs and tablets that were
originally reserved for the day afer
Thanksgiving and early December, the
Associated Press reported.
The move was seen as another sign that
retailers are moving aggressively to get the
atenton of holiday shoppers early, partly
because there are six fewer shopping days
between Thanksgiving and Christmas than
there were last year.
Meanwhile, Apple has been uncharacteristcally
silent about sales of a new product. The
company typically releases sales fgures on the
frst Monday afer a product launch, but tech
analysts speculate that it hasnt released data
about the iPad Air because it is waitng for the
release of a new iPad Mini later this month.
The only early reading on the iPad Airs popularity
has come from phone carriers that also distribute
it, though none have presented unit sales fgures.
AT&T said Monday that its actvatons of new
iPads from Friday to Sunday was more than three
tmes higher than it was when Apple launched
new iPads a year ago. However, cellular iPads
didnt appear all at once last year as they did
this year. T-Mobile on Tuesday that it sold more
iPads on Friday than it did in the entre July-to-
September quarter.

Samsung Electronics Co. has a new goal afer
overtaking Apple in smartphones: it wants to be
world No. 1 in tablet computers too.
A top executve, Shin Jong-kyun, told analysts
on Wednesday that Samsungs tablet business
is growing rapidly and the company will become
the biggest maker of tablet computers. He didnt
give a tmeframe.
Shin said Samsungs tablet sales will exceed 40
million units this year, more than double sales in
2012.
Samsung tablet shipments started to grow
remarkably since the second half of last year, he
said.
Research group IDC estmates that Samsung sold
16.6 million tablets in 2012, lagging far behind
Apple Inc. which sold 65.7 million iPads.
But Samsung is on the rise, capturing 20 percent
market share in the July-September quarter while
Apple, which led the commercializaton of tablet
computng, fell to 30 percent.
Apple previously had more than half of the global
tablet market but its dominance has eroded as
Samsung boosted sales with cheaper Galaxy Tab
computers that ofer many diferent screen sizes.
The same trend has already played out in
smartphones. Apple transformed the mobile
phone industry when it started selling the iPhone
in 2007 but its success was quickly imitated and
Samsungs smartphone shipments surpassed
Apples iPhone sales in 2011. The following year,
the South Korean company became the largest
supplier of mobile handsets overall, surpassing
Nokia.
Shins speech was part of Samsungs frst event
tailored for analysts and investors since 2005 as
the South Korean company tries to boost its share
price, which has fagged despite a string of record
profts.
SAMSUNG AIMS TO TOPPLE APPLE
AS NO. 1 IN TABLETS

Responding to pressure to increase returns to
investors, Chief Financial Ofcer Lee Sang-hoon
said Samsung plans to double its dividend this
year to the equivalent of 1 percent of the average
price of its common shares.
Samsung also said it plans to adopt outside
technologies and hire talent through aggressive
acquisitons.
Kwon Oh-hyun, the companys vice chairman,
said Samsung wants to be the top medical
device maker through acquiring companies
and developing its own technologies. In the last
three years, Samsung spent $1 billion to buy
14 companies in medical equipment, mobile
sofware and services.
The event failed to boost investor confdence
immediately. Shares of Samsung closed 2.3
percent lower in Seoul.

It looks as though the introducton of Apple Inc.s
new streaming music service hasnt thrown
Pandora Media Inc.s rhythm of.
Oakland-based Pandora said people spent 1.47
billion hours listening to its Internet radio ofering
in October, an increase of 8% compared with the
previous month and up 18% over last year.
Also, Pandoras share of the total radio listening
in the United States has increased to 8.06%,
compared with 6.61% a year ago.
This comes afer the September launch of Apples
iTunes Radio, which the Cupertno, Calif.-based
tech giant recently said has drawn about 20
million users.
Shares of Pandora rose by more than 7% to
$27.59 in midday trading Tuesday in New York.
October audience metrics have been a
major focus for investors as they refect
the frst full month since Apples release of
iTunes Radio, said JPMorgan analyst Doug
Anmuth in a note to clients. Overall, we
believe the metrics suggest Pandora has held
up well during the launch.
Its worth notng that Pandoras uptck in
listener hours was partly driven by the
eliminaton of its 40-hour-a-month cap on
mobile listening shortly before iTunes Radio
went live.
Also, its number of actve listeners fell from
September to 70.9 million, suggestng that
some of the less dedicated listeners tried out
Apples new service, according to Anmuth.

Apple seems to have trimmed the bill for making
its latest iPad along with the tablet computers
width and weight.
The iPad Air that sells for $499 costs Apple
$274 to make, based on an analysis released
Tuesday by the research frm IHS Inc. Thats a 13
percent decrease from the estmated $316 that
it cost Apple to make the third-generaton iPad
introduced last year.
The iPad Air went on sale last week. IHS buys
various devices and then takes them apart to
assess how much the parts cost.
While the iPad Air slims down in size, the
proft margins are getng fater, said Andrew
Rassweiler, IHSs senior director of cost
benchmarking services, in a statement.

Apple Inc. declined to comment Tuesday. But
Chief Financial Ofcer Peter Oppenheimer
assured analysts in a conference call last month
that Apple is going to work really hard to get
down the cost curves of its products.
The gap between Apples costs and the iPad Airs
selling price is even wider on models that ofer
more storage. For instance, IHS estmates the
32-gigabyte version of the iPad Air only costs
Apple an additonal $8.40 to make yet sells for
$100 more than the 16-gigabyte model.
Lowering the bill for making the iPad Air could
help Apple reverse a recent slump in its profts
that has contributed to a 25 percent drop from
the companys peak stock price in September
2012. The stock dipped $1.25 Tuesday to close at
$525.45.
Apples earnings have fallen from the previous
year in each of the last three quarters as more
people buy devices selling for less than the
Cupertno, California, companys latest iPads
and iPhones.
Besides snapping up cheaper products that
compete against Apple, more consumers have
been setling for older iPhones and smaller iPads
with lower price tags, too.
The phenomenon is causing Apples average
selling prices to fall. For instance, iPads sold for an
average of $439 in Apples latest quarter ending
in late September, a 14 percent decline from $508
at the same tme last year.
The iPad Mini, Apples frst tablet with a
screen smaller than the standard 10-inch
(25-centmeter) display, is the main reason
prices came down. The prices for the iPad
Mini, which debuted late year, initally started
at $329. That model is now selling for as low
as $299 as Apple prepares to release a more
sophistcated version of the Mini featuring a
high-defniton screen later this month. The
top-of-the-line Mini will sell for $399 to help
cover the costs for a more vibrant display.

As the BlackBerry buyout deal crumbles under its
own lack of promise, fans of the Canadian handset
maker can only sit back and wonder what might
have been.
The deadline to take the failing smartphone
outit private passed as Fairfax Financial Holdings,
BlackBerrys largest investor, balked on its $4.7
billion bid afer failing to raise the necessary
capital to close the deal. Instead, Fairfax decided
to sack CEO Thorsten Heins and temporarily hand
over the reins to former Sybase CEO John Chen,
who will become executve chairman. More
important, Fairfax will help pump $1 billion into
the company via a debt deal.
The $1 billion infusion should provide the money-
losing company some breathing room to consider
other suitors or ponder the prospects of breaking
up the company and selling its parts.
No doubt, BlackBerry and its shareholders fnd
themselves on the short end of the spectrum
when it comes to taking advantage of the next
stage of the mobile wireless boom. BlackBerry
would be lucky to survive, much less thrive, in the
Post-Boom smartphone Market, as ISI Group
technology analyst Bill Whyman likes to call it.
Of course, BlackBerry, Nokia, Motorola and
others have lost out to Samsung and Apple.

IS HEADED
TOWARD
BLACKOUT

Samsung is No. 1 in total wireless handset unit
market share, with 24.7%, and is the leader in
smartphones, with 31.4% market share, according
to IDC. Samsungs Galaxy brand is well known and
highly regarded, and the companys stellar supply
chain allows it to ofer various popular models at
atractve prices.
In the clubhouse as your leader at the high-
end of the market is Apple. Samsung passed
Apple in total smartphone market share in
the fall of 2011 and leapfrogged Nokia, which
was the global smartphone leader not that
long ago, in total handset market share in the
winter of 2012.
Apple has made some concessions to broadening
its reach and moving slightly down market with
the iPhone 5c and dropping prices on some older
models. It also trimmed the price of the original
iPad Mini tablet to $299 from $329, but the 10-
inch iPad is stll expensive with a price startng at
$499, points out ISIs Whyman.
Thus, Apple contnues to stake the high ground,
especially in the wake of luring Burberry CEO
Angela Ahrendts to honcho the retail store
operatons. That clearly is an indicaton that Apple
intends to remain a luxury brand.
But, with smartphone sales approaching nearly
60% of the total handset market, the smartphone
boom is startng to mature, and handsets are
becoming commoditzed, not unlike laptops. How
Apple plans to navigate the shoals of a maturing
smartphone market is a mystery. In a previous
column, we pondered the wisdom or likelihood
that Apple could possibly introduce more
moderately priced handsets at the expense of
proft margin erosion.
But if Apple CEO Tim Cook is intent on staying
on High Street, perhaps the CEO should
consider focusing on ofering more value-added
applicatons and services.
Apple has all of the pieces, such as data centers,
iTunes, the AppStore, iAd, iCloud, and a huge
developer community to make this happen,
Whyman points out. Stll, Apple seems strangely
106
107
ambivalent about what could be an incremental
source of high-value revenue.
As smartphone growth contnues to cool in
2014, handset makers will need to start looking
to apps and services for future proft growth,
Whyman says.
Samsung held its frst developers conference
here last week, where the South Korean
electronics giant revealed it was atemptng to
create its own app ecosystem and investng in
sofware and services.
There are other examples. Twiter released a new
Android operatng system app on the Samsung
platorm in October. Non-Microsof Nokia (the
remaining non-handset entty) plans to concentrate
on its mapping and locaton-based services. EBays
PayPal unit is rumored to be shopping for a mobile
commerce company, and the federal government
recently revealed that some 1,000 or so new
medical sofware products are being sold each
month for smartphones -- showing the appette for
mobile wireless services in health care.
Meantme, there are a number of once-mighty
wireless handset outits that arent going to make
it to the next round and fourish in the post-
smartphone boom bonanza.
Of course, Nokia is selling its handset operatons
to Microsof. HTC, which was once a major
partner of Microsof and Windows Phone, is in the
midst of reorganizaton while rumors of outside
investment swirl, including word that China
Mobile has kicked its tres.
On top of that, the once go-go wireless tower
industry is undergoing consolidaton, providing yet
another sign that the mobile infrastructure market
is also maturing.
And then there is BlackBerry, burning through
cash while its board casts about for a new chief
executve. Indeed, the odds are longer than ever
that the Canadian outit will be around to partake
in the post-boom party.

Apple CEO Tim Cook penned an op-ed artcle in
Mondays Wall Street Journal to urge the passage
of a federal law that would protect lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender employees from
discriminaton in the workplace.
For too long, too many people have had to hide
that part of their identty in the workplace, he
wrote. Those who have sufered discriminaton
have paid the greatest price for this lack of legal
protecton. But ultmately we all pay a price.
If our co-workers cannot be themselves in the
workplace, they certainly cannot be their best
selves.
The Employment Non-Discriminaton Act faces a
key vote in the Senate on Monday -- supported
by all 55 Democratc senators and at least a
handful of Republicans, CNN Money reported.
Its atypical for Mr. Cook to speak publicly about
issues not directly afectng Apples operatons,
CNN said.
While 29 states stll allow employers to fre
workers based on sexual orientaton, more
than 90 percent of the Fortune 500 companies
have adopted writen nondiscriminaton
policies explicitly prohibitng harassment and
discriminaton on the basis of sexual orientaton,
the report said.
