PS4 VS XBOX ONE
While a great deal of the conversation around
the launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
has been about the graphics and game quality,
there is a quiet but exciting development for
both consoles with their supporting apps. The
PlayStation App and SmartGlass app for Xbox
One ofer levels of interconnection, control
and access away from your TV screen that
has never been seen before. Your smartphone
and tablet can become important tools to
controlling your console or completing a game.
The SmartGlass app was originally
attempted for Xbox 360, but relaunched for
Xbox One and since the console itself was built
with this new functionality in mind, the two
work more seamlessly and faster with each
other. Whats more, some frst-party games
such as Dead Rising 3 and Ryse: Son Of Rome
ofer companion app experiences through the
SmartGlass app, giving you access to additional
missions or just an overview of your progress
compared to your friends.
On PlayStation, much of the second-screen
excitement is centred around Sonys own
PlayStation Vita handheld device, but the new
PlayStation App is no slouch. Once connected
to your PS4, you can use it as a second-screen
mirror and remote for your dashboard. Perhaps
more interesting is the way you can use it
away from your console as a messenger,
activity feed tracker and social tool. You can
purchase games through the app too, although
it launches the web browser to do this.

SOCIAL FEATURES
As a second-screen mirror, you can use SmartGlass
for a more immersive gaming experience, doubling
as both a remote control and a dashboard for
information. For instance, games like Dead Rising
3 can use SmartGlass as a second screen to display
maps and item location tools. You can also use
SmartGlass as a keyboard when using the Xbox Ones
built in Internet Explorer browser.
Whereas SmartGlass is targeted at gameplay, the
PlayStation App emphasises making navigation
of the PS4s broad and bold menu design a super
smooth experience. You can use either your
smartphone or tablet as a keyboard, to type out
messages and navigate the PS4 menu screen
instead of using the DualShock 4. However, it does
not ofer the same in-game support as the Xbox app.
With a dedicated section to the app for tracking your
friends and followers as well as sending out group
and single messages, the Xbox One SmartGlass app
is a great way to keep connected with your gaming
friends even when youre not on or even near your
console. On top of that, you can see the recent
achievements and game clips your friends have been
making by taking a look at their profles.
Staying connected is what the PlayStation App
excels at. By logging in with your PlayStation
Network (PSN) ID you can access your entire
trophies list, compare with friends, use the app as
a messenger service for free with anyone who also
has a PSN account, see an activity feed of your
friends latest escapades and watch live feeds they
may be broadcasting as they happen.
The SmartGlass app is pretty much a one-for-one
replication of the Xbox One dashboard, which in
turn is pretty close to the interfaces on Windows 8
PCs and Windows phones. If anything, the simplifed
design for Xbox works better. With regards to the
app, everything is colourful and bold, making it
easy to identify and it looks equally as good on a
smartphone as it does on a tablet.
An amazing extension of your Xbox One with some
really fun integration with games. The only downside
is that you cant directly access the store.
The basic app design here is a little plain, but
that means its not too complicated either. Its a
shame that the tablet and smartphone apps are
essentially identical and at present theres no native
iPad version available for iOS. That said, the PS4
menus work great on smart devices once you start
mirroring and controlling your console. It could be a
little more eye-catching though.
A proper mobile experience with access to your
full profle and queueing up downloads, but limited
interaction with games from the app.

Procreate has had a major
update, dubbed Procreate 2,
bringing a new visual design
and additional drawing,
layering, and transformation
tools. The app also includes
support for the 64-bit A7 processors found on
the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display, as
well as a new ultra high-defnition 4K canvas.
Procreates co-founder James Cuda explains the
features and answers the age-old question of
iPad art whether or not to use a stylus.
How diferent is Procreate 2 from the
original ofering?
Even though Procreate 2 feels familiar, its very
diferent from the original. The interface has
been completely redesigned to match the new
iOS 7 aesthetic. The update also has a heap of
new features like a completely new gesture-
driven gallery, 64-bit support and, of course,
graphics-accelerated flters and adjustments.
Its almost an entirely new app.
How does the new 64-bit performance
improve the user experience?
Generally 64-bit technology provides little
beneft to most apps. Where 64-bit benefts
users is in high-performance software which
is great news for us. 64-bit tech has improved
load times almost everywhere, decreased
delays when switching tools and reloading
documents. Weve actually seen improvements
to responsiveness across the entire app.
What are the benefts of the new real-time
flters and upgraded efects?
As artists, we need tools that not only keep
up with us, but have the ability to blend
seamlessly into our natural workfow. By
unlocking the power in the iPad GPU, we can
render efects like Gaussian blur as fast as
you can slide across the screen. Curves can
be manipulated directly on the screen, which
not only allow for precision adjustments, but
also foster moments of serendipity. Real-time
efects turn out to be a beautifully natural
and ef cient way to work.
Is Procreate 2 accessible to everyone or is it
just a specialist tool for professionals?
We designed Procreate frst and foremost for
the creative professional. But good design isnt
limited by demographic. When something is
well designed, almost anyone can pick it up.
We poured our heart and soul into Procreate
in the hope that it would be accessible to
both professionals and consumers, and I think
Procreate 2 is getting close to that goal.
Would you ever consider a version of
Procreate for iPhone or Android tablet?
The iPhone is interesting, but I question
the value of a high-performance creative
application on a phone. I think capturing
detailed ideas on phone is interesting though.
Android is also interesting, but device and OEM
fragmentation is a real barrier for us.
Given the extent of the update, were you
tempted to launch it as a separate app?
Procreate 2 was very close to being a paid
update. The traditional software market
dictates paid updates are necessary for
growth, which has a measure of truth to it. But
were not in a traditional software market. The
App Store is still young, and rather than try and
extract money from existing Procreate artists,
were interested in fnding compelling ways to
inspire new artists to experience Procreate.

Steve Jobs said of tablet design: As soon as
you have a stylus, youre dead. Do you to
paint with your fngers or with a stylus?
Stylus unequivocally stylus. For the majority
of tasks he was right, a stylus is unnecessary.
When it comes to creative software however,
he was wrong. A stylus is an absolute necessity.

may need as well.
Final thought
No matter how much guidance apps can ofer
you, baking a good cake requires practice. Still,
the detailed recipe available in apps should help
as long as you avoid spilling cake mix on your
device! At the very least, theyll provide the
motivation to get you into the kitchen and start
baking, while the decorating app we used will
inspire you to be more creative.

HOW TO
Capture an
object in 3D
using just
the iPhone
camera
There are plenty of image-sharing apps around,
but Seene ofers a unique angle literally on
mobile photography. Using just the standard
camera on your iPhone (4S or later), this clever
software can capture 3D photos, known as seenes, that
can be viewed at various angles by tilting your device. These
images have a real wow factor, but are very simple to create.
To capture a subject, tap the Camera icon to view your
image superimposed with dots. Dots represent reference
points for the app to render the image, so the more there
are on screen the better. Tap the Record button once
youve found a subject with the most dots and a four-sector
graphic will appear on screen. It then requires a steady hand
as you move the camera smoothly and slowly up, down,
left and right around the subject to turn each sector green.
Move too suddenly and you will have to restart.
Once all four sectors have turned green, youve captured
all the required angles and the seene is saved. It can then
be shared via Seene itself (you need to create an account),
Facebook and Twitter. Each seene also has a URL that can
be pasted into an email or message and seenes can be
viewed via WebGL-enabled desktop browsers.
It does take a bit of practice to get really good results.
Textured or patterned items work best it doesnt work so
well with plain or refective surfaces and they need to be
kept very still during the capture process, which is probably
why the Seene users gallery has so many pictures of
sleeping pets! Also, its best if the subject is placed in front
of a plain background patterns tend to get distorted.
While only a very limited range of angles is captured
you cant see at all far around an object the 3D efect is
really quite impressive and youll fnd yourself compelled to
capture lots more seenes to share with others.

The improving camera lens on
each new iPhone has meant that
the device is being used more as
flming equipment more often. The
Hunting is a project that perfectly epitomises
this idea, its an interactive, frst-person zombie
movie that has been shot entirely on iPhone.
What this has created is an incredibly
engaging experience well backed up, like any
good horror movie, by a startling soundtrack.
The premise is that you awake to fnd that
the worlds population has succumbed to a
virus that has turned them into zombies. The
suspense here is generated by the fact that youre making the decisions and controlling
the outcome of the story. This is done by using
gestures to complete actions, and tapping to
choose between multiple routes and options.
Although this app is only part one designed
to be a taste of what to expect throughout the
story there is plenty of suspense and undead-
battling to keep you engaged.
The Hunting keeps things simple in terms of
the interactions, timing everything well so that
only the key decisions are left to you, rather
than messing up the pacing of the story by
having you complete every action yourself.
What The Hunting does is give a tantalising
taste of what this series could produce in the
future. The preview of the second chapter is
absolutely terrifying, showing a lot of promise.

The Star Wars juggernaut is
moving forward at light speed,
with new movies in the pipeline
and two Angry Birds games on iOS
and Android. Now a galaxy far, far away has
been given the Nimblebit treatment the team
behind Tiny Tower and Pocket Planes.
If youre familiar with these other games,
you will know what to expect. Taking orders
from Emperor Palpatine, you have to construct
your own space station, building foor after
foor of businesses to pay for it, hiring staf
and keeping products in stock as you go. But
because youre working for the Dark Side and
not Mall of America, you also manage basement
levels where you interrogate rebel spies.
If youre a fan of the movies, there are
endless in-jokes and cut-scenes starring
familiar faces rendered in 16-bit to enjoy, but
beyond that there is nothing here that you
wouldnt get from just playing Tiny Tower
instead. If you didnt like having to manually
operate an elevator or pay real money to speed
up how long restocking takes in Tiny Tower, this
game wont be for you either.
The one stand-out feature that is new to
Tiny Death Star is the Collectable feature, in
which you can unlock iconic characters from
the movies and view them in albums. This
makes for a fun side-quest to the main game
and might just help to win over users.

The British Film Institute is one of the flm
industrys most respected organisations and
here it presents 100 iconic movies, selected for
being interesting and infuential. Drawing on
the acclaimed book of the same name, with all of its insight
and discussion about the various included flms, 100 Cult
Films: BFI Screen Guides gives the original work a multimedia
twist by including flm trailers and video clips.
When watched through the app, some of the videos
lose their sound and picture quality, but luckily there is a
button that directs you to YouTube, where the reproduction
appears to be better (you also beneft from being able to
read comments from users too). Still, this isnt too much of
a problem since the videos serve mainly as additions to the
star attractions: the prose and the choice of flms.
Dirty Dancing and Dawn of the Dead sit alongside The
Big Lebowski and Fight Club. Tapping on one of these
entries shows you flm credits, fan sites and quotes and you
can view the year it was made and its running time.
Each entry can also be shared via email, Twitter and
Facebook and then be marked up as having been seen by
yourself or as something you want to watch another day. Its
strength lies in its searching abilities and the fact you can
not only view and edit flms youve seen and browse your
favourite ficks, but also search by director, year of release
and genre, jumping through the list using the alphabetical
menu that runs down the side of the screen.
There is no doubt that this is an impressive body of work
made even better by clear presentation. Other elements
of the app are present but do not overwhelm the central
message, instead enabling you to get more out of the
information that is presented to you. For flm fans, 100
Cult Films is an essential purchase and a guide that you will
return to again and again for reference and inspiration.

Unless youre already familiar
with Justin.tv, its details in the
App Store mentioning premium
broadcasters might lead you to
think it ofered professionally broadcast TV
channels from around the world. The reality is
that the video streams are all user-generated.
Not that all of their content is necessarily
original, however. For instance, browse the
Sports category and youll soon fnd live
streams of football matches being shown on
subscription TV channels such as Sky Sports
even though Justin.tv prohibits copyright
violations. It also supposedly bans pornography,
although we soon found Japanese erotica.
Even if youre not concerned about this,
you may well be bothered by the unreliable
nature of the service. Many of the live sports
feeds we tried resulted in a frozen picture or
error, while the ones that did work ofered a disappointingly low-res view. While there are
thousands of live streams available, arranged
into categories such as Entertainment,
Gaming and News & Events and flterable into
subcategories, quite a few channels we tried
came up with a message saying they werent
currently available on mobile devices.
The social aspect is interesting though; you
can type messages to chat with others during
broadcasts. There is even a Social category,
although this largely consists of people staring
at webcams. In short, the app needs tidying up.

Sound is a beautiful way to view
and listen to your music collection
both stored locally and on iCloud.
Upon launching, youre greeted with an
attractive wall of album covers. Just click on
one to start playing it if on iCloud, it may take
a few seconds to start streaming. Swipe the
album art of the current album to see a list of
the tracks and a shuf e option. You can then
swipe the playing window up to the top of the
screen for a better view of the wall.
The app ofers a diferent and appealing
way to access your music and we found that
it helped us to rediscover old tunes wed
forgotten about. By default, it shows all of your
music on the wall, which you can scroll around
to fnd more. Tapping the icon at the bottom-
right brings up a menu from which you can flter
the content by genre and playlist its possible
to tick multiple choices for each. In addition, you
can opt whether to include music from iCloud
and any without artwork (showing a musical
notes icon on the wall instead).
Theres also an option to include related
music previews the usual 30-second snippets
from the iTunes Store, although this seems to
be based on the genre rather than the artist or
playlist. Its a nice additional feature though and
gives the app another solid selling point.

EVERYDAY
In a world where people Instagram their
breakfast, adding efects to photos is now
commonplace. Applying those efects to
videos, however, is a fairly recent invention for
consumer devices and Cine Lumi is hoping to jump on that
bandwagon by ofering one of the simplest solutions yet.
Included in the app are two sets of eight efects, named
static and dynamic, which are designed to add a diferent
look to your creations. All you need to do is tap one of the
icons on the main screen to start capturing a new video, or
to select one that has already been recorded and you are
then ready to start adding efects.
The two strips at the bottom of the screen let you
select from static or dynamic efects, but we have to say
that the quality of the efects is not great. Most are very
simplistic, almost childish in their design, and simply add
some icons or patterns above the videos. This has the
dual efect of cheapening the quality of the videos and at
times completely getting in the way of the subjects you are
watching. Add to this the fact that the icons do not really
add all that much relevance to the subject matter and we
struggle to see what benefts this solution can ofer for the
vast majority of video content users produce.
The way it all works is impressive because it is extremely
quick and never skipped a beat in our tests, but that only
makes up part of the story. The interface is very good,
almost artistic, which leads the purchaser to believe that
this is a quality solution, which it is in some areas.
If the efects could be enhanced and the dynamic icons,
which move and do little else above the video content, could
be made truly dynamic then this could be a solution worthy
of your time and efort. Until then, Cine Lumi is more of a
novelty that fails in the core area of bringing added vibrancy
and personality to your videos.

Aimed at children with an
autism spectrum disorder, Down
Syndrome, special needs or those
who are very young, Turn Taker
aims to teach the basics of sharing.
A large hand points in the direction of the
person whose turn it is and then, after a period
of time, the app states Finished and displays
another hand in the opposite direction.
With two participants, this makes
it clear whose turn it is, which
teaches children that
turn-taking is the
fairly rapid handover
from one person to
another. The time
limits can be adjusted so that the app can be
tailored to suit whatever physical game is being
played at the time.
But there are some misgivings. Although the
presentation is bright and colourful and there is
a lovely story which explains exactly why turn-
taking is important as a social skill, there are
spelling mistakes (your instead of youre being
a notable one), it only allows two people to
take part at any one time. Additionally, the app
doesnt seem overly complicated to develop, so
we do question the price tag.
And yet for children with learning
disabilities and those who are having trouble
understanding the concept of taking turns,
it will be an invaluable help, being efective
in teaching both turn-
taking and patience.

JOHN LENNON: THE
BERMUDA TAPES
There is an undeniable enduring
quality about the music of The
Beatles but, more than that, a
continuing fascination with John
Lennon, someone who continues to inspire
entire generations and countless musicians.
This historical app charts his journey in the
summer of 1980 to Bermuda. It was to be his
fnal creative period, for months later he would
be shot dead. There is no mention of that here;
instead its about the merging of art and audio
into a compelling narrative that explores his
infuences. It shows how he drew on the most
inspiring fgure in his life, Yoko Ono, as they
penned the music of Double Fantasy.
The app has it all: newly discovered photos,
interviews and handwritten lyric sheets. The
audio is crisp, and, with the beneft of hindsight,
often haunting. There is plenty of it too.
But the music is just as important. The app
places the music and story onto tapes which
play in a retro-style deck, making it feel quite
nostalgic. Sometimes there are interruptions to
the music but its a minor distraction.
The main story is interactive and much can
be gained from tilting and dragging the little
ship around the screen. There is a lot to be
learned here, and fans in particular will love it.

Its hard not to
appreciate the

with the imagination. It is tactile
as well and you can zoom in and
spin the world around but it is in
the sheer amount of data included

simpler to just log in automatically.
Knock aims to make unlocking your Mac easier while
keeping it secure. Pairing the two together with low-energy
Bluetooth technology, the app runs in the background on
your phone and, when you come to unlock your Mac, will
respond to a knock to remove the need for a password.
Because you almost always have your iPhone with you,
it seems like the perfect tool to help you unlock your Mac
quickly. Setup is incredibly simple; youll need to download a
free receiver app on the Mac in order for the two devices to
recognise each other, but once youve got it, the two will link
instantly. Prompts on the screen make everything simple to
set up, and once its done youre ready to go.
On occasion the app took a little while to recognise that
the Mac was ready and waiting to be unlocked, meaning
we might as well have typed in our password. However,
for the most part, the app connected instantly and a quick
double-tap on the screen immediately unlocked the Mac.
The responsiveness turned out to be very impressive, with a
knock very rarely failing to register.
The interface is nice too. Once youve set it up, the app
shows when your computer is ready to be unlocked. There are
no menus or buttons; the only function is unlinking your Mac,
which isnt clearly denoted, so can be a confusing prospect.
While its only compatible with a few Macs, Knock is a
great way to save time and show of to your friends. Its well
worth a try for saving time and having a bit of fun.

To-do apps are perhaps the most
common of all productivity apps
available today, but Gneo attempts
to take a diferent view on how
you should keep yourself organised by bringing
your tasks and calendars together. The ultra-
minimalist interface may appear to be too
simple for some, but it focuses the eye on the
tasks more than any other app we have seen
plus the healthy balance between gestures and
taps works very nicely. It feels natural from the
frst use and if you take the time to understand
exactly how it works, you may become more
organised than before in short order.
Gneo actually looks like a calendar in some
views, which is a positive when it comes to
overviewing what you need to get done. The
priority view also places your tasks into logical
sections, which works particularly well on
the iPad. If you are also an Evernote user, the
integration here could bring all of your most
important information together with a full set
of data from your calendars, tasks and Evernote
it could easily replace other apps straight away.
There are some quirks in the way it works
that may not suit everyone and the minimalism
is very sharp, perhaps taking away the visual
enjoyment. Still, for its power and fexibility,
Gneo ofers users plenty of innovative benefts.

every day. The interface, which is always vital

It could not be simpler and neither
could creating a new event. As you type a
description, the software will attempt to work
out what you are doing, which is a brilliant
innovation. For example, typing Meet John at
12pm tomorrow will create an entry for midday
with Meet John as the description. You can
avoid this feature if required for maximum
fexibility, and even use the Reminders app to
ensure every base is covered. The features in
Fantastical 2 are the only ones youll ever need.

bad thing. It is a tried-and-tested formula and one that
works extremely well on a smartphone or tablet thanks to
the simplistic controls and the way everything has been
designed to allow for simple taps to control the character.
As you progress, the levels become visually more
pleasing and there are many more challenges to complete,
but it remains a genre that requires thinking quickly and
timing each jump to perfection to gain the most points. With
more than 75 levels to play, you should be playing for some
time, but repetition is also a factor that becomes apparent
if you play for long stints. To a point this is unavoidable,
but there is still a sense of adding to the franchise by only
changing the aesthetics and background music.
Still, it would be too critical to not highlight the quality of
the graphics and the way the game plays, and for those who
are new to the Rayman legend there is a lot to enjoy here.
One aspect that is not often mentioned is how enjoyable
the game can be for younger children and adults alike
thanks to the simplicity of the controls and the cuteness of
the main character. With so many rewards on ofer, there is
enough to keep most people coming back for more.
There is some lag on low-end devices, which is worth
being aware of, but at the higher end of the hardware
spectrum, everything ran smoothly. Aside from this its still a
largely positive experience with much to enjoy.

The story behind Boson X involves
a scientist searching for subatomic
particles in an Large Hadron
Collider-style accelerator. It is
fimsy, shallow and hardly realistic, but no story
is actually needed. This is a variation of the
popular endless-runner games in which you run
into the screen jumping left and right to avoid
obstacles. The gameplay has been stripped
down to the bare minimum, yet it works
brilliantly and it is very addictive. Once you start
playing you cant put it down and it has that
elusive Just one more go quality that many
games strive to achieve, but few do. Imagine running down a tunnel that is
foating in space, so there is nothing outside
of the walls. As you run down it, there are
missing pieces, so you have to dodge them by
moving left or right. There are gaps that must
be jumped and sometimes the walls almost
completely disappear, leaving just the odd block
here and there. You must jump from one to
another. Blue ones give you extra speed and
power, while red ones fall away.
You will quickly be hooked on this game, but
apart from changing colour schemes, there is
little variation in gameplay. The longevity must
be questioned and its hard to say whether you
will still be playing it a month from now, but you
certainly will for a while at least. Its great fun.

Designed for two to four players, Pandemic
is unlike other games in that you work co-
operatively as a team to beat the game, rather
than compete to beat other players. This means
that it works as a single-player game too, with
you taking the other players turns.
The game is played on a world
map on which the major cities
are highlighted. There are four
virulent diseases infecting certain
cities and you are part of a team
of people trying to eradicate the
contagions. Each member has
diferent abilities and four actions
can be taken per turn. They could
travel to a city, cure the infection
there, and so on. Cards are dealt on
each turn and collecting the right
ones enables a cure to be found for
a disease. The aim is to cure all four
of the diseases to beat the game.
If you have played the board game youll be
right at home with the iPad app in no time at all.
Newcomers could well struggle with the games
complex rules, however, and with a multi-page
manual that is essential reading, the frst hour
isnt much fun. Dont give up, this is actually a
great game that will keep you engaged.
