Mat4002 - Coursework Summary Reverse Engineering Brief: Week 3, Activity: Week 10, Submitted: Week 11

Overview
Reverse Engineering is about the ability to deconstruct a product to understanding the function of its various components, how each is made, of what and why. This coursework will see you do exactly that. You will be allocated groups (of up to 5 people) in week 3. As a group you need to source a product to take apart. This product should not be larger than a bread bin and should have some mechanical function i.e. not a mobile phone! It is also important that it has at least 5 different parts for subsequent individual analysis. You need to have sourced this object by Week 10. Then in groups you will have 1 hour in G27 to deconstruct (take apart) your product. As you do this you need to document the deconstruction. This is an important part of the reverse engineering process, for example, imagine trying to remember where every part went if you were deconstructing an engine. During the deconstruction process each person selects a part to investigate. Each person must select a different part and write a one page report using the template provided below. This report will include: 1. Images of the deconstruction process that provide a step-by-step sequence eventually showing the part that is being reported on. 2. Top (Plan), Front (Elevation) and Side views of the part. 3. A statement explaining what the part is and its function. 4. A statement on the manufacturing process, or processes, used to make it. 5. A statement regarding the material you believe the part is made from. 6. A summary explaining why the part, with its function, has been made using that/those process/processes and material(s)

Submission Marking

A hard copy of your one-page report needs to be submitted, with a cover sheet, by 3:30pm on Friday March 30 .

th

The report carries 15% of the total coursework mark. Reports will be judged on their professionalism and how accurately, clearly and concisely they convey the information regarding the part.

Schedule
Each group will be given a 1hr slot in G27, during week 10, to take their artefact apart and document it. Staff will be on hand to advise on deconstruction and also discuss possible materials and processes. The timetabling of this will be arranged for one of the times listed: Tuesday, Mar 20th, 2-4pm Thursday, Mar 22th, 11-1pm Friday, Mar 23th, 10-11am

Note: Initially I accidentally missed the labs which was set for my group to do this coursework due to illness, and my group forgot to set aside a piece of the product for me to evaluate, thus I decided to use and reverse engineer my own object.

Statement:
I decided to investigate an old, fully functional hairdrier. From this, I selected to examine the nose (top end) of the item in more detail, of which the primary function is to channel hot air in a precise manner for the most efficient result.

Manufacturing & Materials

I believe that this particular part is made from a type of thermoset polymer. Its primary function being to insulate the heat so it is contained within the hairdrier preventing the user from being harmed.

Reasoning
The reason that X is made using Y process(es) and Z material(s) is.
