The Arena

Belo Horizonte is expected to become, in the next decade, one of the most important centers of business tourism and events in Brazil. Today, though, the metropolis still lacks in spaces that widely, intelligently and flexibly meet to the demands of this growing and demanding market. The greatest challenge of this project was to develop a truly distinguished spectacles arena that would enable Belo Horizonte to be definitely put in script for national and international artists shows and tours. Currently, the city has two extreme and uncomfortable situations in terms of spaces of the gender, either offering spaces for limited audiences (under 5 thousand people) and with outdated infrastructure, or the huge space represented by the Mineiro stadium, which hosts exclusively gigantic events with costs that only become financially practicable when reaching audiences over 35 thousand people. With complete infrastructure (including a helipad), capacity for 20 thousand people and 2 thousand covered parking spaces, the ARENA was designed to receive most of the big events that today do not get to Belo Horizonte, meeting space and economic viability only in capitals such as So Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba. But in order to make the investment viable, it was necessary to think of a space flexible and multi-purpose, able to fit the demands of Belo Horizontes strong business tourism. Distinguished Solution To realize a proposal that would become a reference in Belo Horizonte, it was necessary to make it distinguished. With contemporary lines, the facades have elements of a live architecture, incorporating a specially developed LED system to translate the music or the show held inside the Arena. The project was primarily based on acoustic and flexibility of the building, which should be able to receive wide and varied events typology. Among the factors that were important when choosing the site are its location and ease of access.

SITE LOCATION

This project is the result of thorough studies of the events market in Belo Horizonte and the citys enormous potential, which will, in the upcoming decades, become one of the greatest business tourism and events centers in Brazil. It was necessary to find a site with prime location, able to house a large arena that represents a space that has as main characteristic the flexibility in the realization of several events to various audiences, considering factors such as mobility and proximity to services. After all, not only is it a big playhouse, but also a space designed for regional, national and international congresses and business event. Thus, besides hosting users who reside or stay in Belo Horizonte or the metropolitan area, the arena was designed to attract and meet users by land or air, either from nearby towns as well as from other states (mainly Rio de Janeiro, So Paulo and the Federal District). Therefore, it was necessary to identify a site that would allow not only to build a complete events space that stands out in the urban landscape of the state capital. The location of this land should offer easy links to the main access roads to the central region of Belo Horizonte and airports as well as proximity to access linking Belo Horizonte to other cities in Minas Gerais and other capitals. SCENARIO The strategic location of the project enabled arouse great interest from investors, but not only that. In the completion and approval of a project with striking architecture and live facades that communicate with the outside observer, it was taken into account the fact that the Arena dominates the city from its top, gaining prominence in the skyline of Belo Horizonte. The union of these location features makes of this a project that unites impactful and intelligent beauty, with great flexibility to use and care for a wide audience.

DISTINGUISHED DESIGN

Aluminium Composite Material (ACM)

Produced by continuously bonding two thin sheets of aluminum or metal on either side of an extruded thermoplastic or mineral-filled thermoplastic core. This core will be fire resistant avoiding the propagation of flames.

The design was one of the major constraints to the viability of the project, since the building could not visually assaulting the landscape but at the same time should call attention to the new venture and become a reference point for the region. The solution adopted was that of a denatured cube, as if this object had been impacted in one of its corners and so deforming itself. At the same time, to call attention to it at nighttime, a system with LED equalization was incorporated to the facades, which will follow the rhythm of the music being played inside the building. This lighting marks and describes the use of this architectural element while highlighting the landscape. For the financial viability of the lighting system, lightweight materials will be used for the composition of the facades, in this case glass skin and ACM with perforations for the LED. These materials ensure lightness to the structure and execution speed and efficiency.

LED Panels
The LED integrated to aluminum composite panels was designed to react according to the activity occurring on the inside of the building, so that people outside could capture the energy and intensity of the ongoing concert.

Glass Skin Curtain Wall

For give the most sunlight possible in interior work spaces, the curtain wall was the chosen system for the building. Combined with the right glass, it will be the perfect system to provide confort and quality for the buildings users.

Acessibility
The main venues in the city were created in times when accessibility was not seen as a major constraint on projects. People with special needs, at these times, were not considered an audience suitable for these spaces. Now, the BH Arena project has as its main concept the democratization of spaces of circulation spaces and areas of residence. Thus, offering the best experience to all its visitors. To make this possible, all access to the different levels are equipped with ramps or lifts. This way, people with physical disabilities can get around without any help. Moreover, the entire complex has directional tactile paths to guide and improve the quality of use of spaces for the visually impaired.

Innovative Technology
The design of the Arena, when it comes to its volume and its impact on users, was clearly thought out and tied to the technology to be used on the facades. The LED integrated to aluminum composite panels was designed to react according to the activity occurring on the inside of the building, so that people outside could capture the energy and intensity of the ongoing concert. On days with no events, a complementary system would be triggered and through studies of chromatic colors, vibrations would oscillate according to the temperature of the environment.

COMMERCIAL TEASER

ARCHICAD 17
Instalation of ArchiCAD 17
BIM technology is relatively new and there are not many software that provide this service. Here, at FarKasVlGyi Architecture, we have always tried to stay in tune with technological advances in the field and have, since 2011, incorporated the feature in our projects through the use of software ArchiCAD. With the arena it was not different. The use of the technology ensured great speed in designing, in addition to better analysis of the project as a whole: definitions of cut and fill on the site, volumetric analysis, preliminary structural design and drawing speed were some of the main points on which the software worked. Designing with plans, sections, facades and model at the same time provides a much thorough analysis of the project, preventing errors and reducing the need for rework. Knowing that, Graphisoft, the provider of software ArchiCAD, used images of the project for the promotion of version 17 of their product. The main image was highlighted during installation amid projects from other offices around the world. This is highlight was, for us, a great honor and opportunity to display the services offered by the office. To our client, it was a the best form of advertisement for the product in which it is being invested, since it was free and linked to a strong brand in the global construction market.
