SOFTSWITCHING
Dear Colleague, The decrease in revenue for traditional voice services in 2005 demonstrates the need to provide next generation voice services in a cost-efficient way. VoIP technology using softswitches brings about lower operation and maintenance costs and has reached a very mature status. Therefore its implementation is considered as a very promising way to go. However, open questions remain. Where will the softswitch architecture end up? How intelligent should a network be? And, is the deployment of IMS in the long run inevitable? This is why you cannot afford to miss our high-level international congress on

SOFTSWITCHING
INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP DAY Workshop Day | Friday, 27th October 2006

Workshop A | 9:00 - 17:00 From softswitching towards controlled provision of IP based multimedia services - Introduction to 3GPP IMS and TISPAN NGN service architectures
Softswitching is today denoting the technical core network evolution from circuit switching to all-IP networks. Whereas softswitching was mainly about PSTN replacement by VoIP in mostly vendor specific approaches, these days the ongoing network convergence and the associated service concepts such as fixed-mobile convergence and triple play are demanding for a more structured and globally standardized all-IP service provisioning architecture. This is today represented by the 3GPP IP Multimedia System (IMS) and the ETSI TISPAN Next Generation Network (NGN) releases. This tutorial starts with a review of the core network evolution towards an all-IP network and motivates the need for seamless service delivery platforms (SDPs). After introducing the IMS/NGN concept the related standard bodies will be briefly reflected. The major tutorial emphasis is on the 3GPP IMS Release 6 core and application layers. The tutorial reviews the key components and their interactions. Based on this knowledge the tutorial introduces the different subsystems defined within the ETSI TISPAN NGN Release 1. A dedicated session is devoted to the IMS market situation in terms of key players and operator introduction strategies. The tutorial ends with an overview of the FOKUS IMS play ground and practical service examples and demos. 1. Network convergence, NGN and SDPs I Service drivers: VoIP , FMC, triple play I Core network evolution towards NGN I Service delivery platforms for NGN / all-IP networks I IMS motivation: IN + Internet I NGN standards bodies: IETF, 3GPP , ETSI TISPAN, ITU-T, ATIS, OMA

2. 3GPP IMS core layer I Understanding IMS as overlay architecture I IMS Core components and interactions (P-CSCF, I-CSCSF, S-CSCF, Client, HSS, MRF, MG) I User registration and IMS security I IMS session control and QoS I IMS charging architecture 3. IMS application layer I IMS AL components and interactions (HSS, AS, MRF, IMS enablers, clients) I Application server operation modes and example call flows I Service provisioning within IMS I AS options (CAMEL, OSA, Servlets) I IMS enablers: Presence, XDMS, devise management, messaging, etc. I IMS applications: VoIP , IM & Presence, Push2Talk / PoC, FMC, Triple Play I IMS vs. SDP aspects 4. ETSI TISPAN NGN Release 1 I General TISPAN NGN requirements and system overview I TISPAN IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) functionality, components and interactions I TISPAN PSTN Emulation Subsystem (PES) functionality, components and interactions I Upcoming TISPAN Streaming Subsystem outlook 5. IMS market overview I IMS market figures - from softswitches to IMS I Key IMS players (operators, vendors) I IMS Introduction scenarios (PTT; FMC, NGN) I IMS business models and key challenges 6. FOKUS Open IMS Playground as an IMS/NGN testbed I IMS testbed concept and service offerings Prof. Dr. Thomas Magedanz, Head of 3G Beyond Division FRAUNHOFER INSTITUTE FOKUS, GERMANY

Workshop B | 9:00 - 12:30 Analysing the architecture of IMS - NGN service platforms and architecture evolution
This workshop will be focused on NGN based service platform and service stratum within NGN conception. We will compare differences between softswitch-based and IMS-based NGN architecture as well as architecture evolution towards all-IP NGN networks. Workshop will give to the participants a general overview about IMS based architecture, elements and related protocols. Significant part is concentrating to the NGN services and application layer interaction with control elements. Presentations will be finished with lesson learned from the real NGN deployment of T-Com/Slovak Telekom.

What the participants will learn: I Principles and concepts of NGN architecture I Differences between Softswitch-based and IMS-based NGN architectures I Overview of the important IMS elements and protocols I Functionalities of service stratum within NGN concept I Basic categorisation of NGN services and applications (with examples) I Real experience from NGN services deployments and product development I Future evolution of softswitching technologies and some remarks about technology trends Eugen Mikoczy, Product Development Specialist Juraj Matejka, Head of Voice Networks Service Team T-COM, SLOVAK TELEKOM, A.S. , SLOVAKIA
