The Three Fundamental Principles as explained by Shaykh

First Matter – Knowledge


♦ The base rule for ‘ebaadah…
o no form of worship is permissible unless it there is textual
proof to support this
o textual proof is the Qur’aan, the Sunnah and the ijmaa
(complete consensus) of the Salafus-Salih
o ex// Someone says “tell me why I should not celebrate the
Prophet’s birthday” rather it should be said to them “no,
prove why you should celebrate the Prophet’s birthday”.
♦ Devoutness, worship, drawing nearer to Allah azza wa jal must be
based on text (Q&S) or ijmaa of Salafus-Salih
♦ Cannot bring ijitihad (interpretation of the scholars) cannot be used
in this area

♦ There is ijmaa among the scholars that the deen (religion i.e. Islam)
is built upon proof
♦ All speech weighed upon two scales Text (Q&S) & Ijmaa
♦ Whoever accepts these will have his speech accepted and whoever
rejects these will have his speech rejected
♦ Al-Mutaba’a: this is the term for following the Prophet salla allahu
alayhi wa sallam
♦ For any act of worship to be accepted it must have the two following
things:
o Ikhlaas (sincerity) & Mutaba’a (following the Prophet)
♦ HADITH: Narrated A’aisha: The Messenger of Allaah (peace
and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever
invents something in this matter of ours will have it
rejected.” Another narration: “Whoever innovates anything
in this matter of ours (Islam) that is not a part of it, will
have it rejected”
(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2550; Muslim, 1718).
♦ Knowledge (3lm) is obligatory on all of us
♦ There are types of 3lm
♦ The first is wajib – that is obligatory
♦ The second is mustahabb – highly recommended but not wajib
♦ The third is known as fard kifayah which is a communal obligation
o i.e. studying medicine, when someone in the community
learns this then the obligation upon the rest of that
community is lifted.
o The same applies to other worldly sciences like engineering,
etc.
♦ The last is 3lm that is haram i.e. magic
♦ Imam Ahmad said that obligatory 3lm is 3lm that a person is not
allowed to be ignorant of.  i.e. pillars of Islaam & eeman, wu’du,
tawheed, etc…

Second Matter – Acting upon 3lm


♦ The second fundamental is acting upon the deen of Allah
♦ The fruit of 3lm is action (3ml)
♦ 3lm without 3ml is like a tree without fruit
♦ HADITH: Ibn Mas’ud said: We would learn ten verses directly
from the mouth of the Prophet salla allahu alayhi wa sallam,
and we would not exceed that until we had learnt their
meaning and acted upon them. He said: We learnt
knowledge and actions (together).
♦ 3lm along with sound actions that have met the obligatory
conditions (Ikhlaas wal-Mutaba’a) will be a proof in your favour with
your Lord
♦ Al-Qur’aan will be a proof either for you or against you
♦ So… 3lm without 3ml is a proof against the slave
♦ The salaf would say that a person who has 3lm does not cease to be
ignorant until he acts upon his 3lm
♦ One does not become a scholar until one acts upon what one has
learned
♦ The Salaf would memorise ahadeeth (pl. of hadeeth) by acting upon
them
♦ Hadith that if you do not act upon your 3lm then you will lose it
o This is a da’eef statement and Al-Albanee included it in his
Da’eefa
o This is a statement of ahlus-sihr (the people of magic)
♦ QUR’AAN: Surat al-Muhammad 47:17 – While as for those
who accept guidance, He increases their guidance, and
bestows on them their piety.
♦ These are the people guided to the path of goodness and righteous
actions
♦ Allah increases them in eeman (faith), 3lm and understanding
♦ HADITH: The two feet of the servant will not cease (from
standing before Allah)/the servant will not proceed on the
Day of Judgement until he is asked about four things: On his
life and how he spent it; On his knowledge and what he did
with it; on his wealth and where he earned it and how he
spent it; and on his body and how he used it.

Third Matter – Calling to what you know


♦ Call to Allah
o Not to madhab
o Not to ahlul-bidah/groups of deviation
♦ Call to Allah upon 3lm
♦ Dawatus-Salafiyyah (Salafi Da’wah) is an all-inclusive and
comprehensive call
♦ So comprehensive that it even encourages removal of objects from
the path
