Strategic Planning Progress and Space Challenges by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister
If you were able to attend to the congregational breakfast on Saturday, February 1st, then you got to hear the results of the Strategic Planning Survey. You also got to hear many ideas and dreams shared by Woodmont members as to what the future has in store for our church. Among them, there was a strong acknowledgement that we need to enhance the front entrance, lobby, and reception area of our preschool. We are moving forward with that. Some money has already been raised through last years Auction and this years Auction is happening this Friday at the home of John and Joan Rich. Woodmont Christian Preschool has been an integral outreach of our church for many years and it has been a key entry point for many families in coming to Woodmont. I believe it will continue to be an entry point in the years to come. We want to do everything we can to sustain its strong reputation and that includes making sure that the facilities are updated and not neglected. The Strategic Planning survey also showed some other challenges on our property. The most notable is the ongoing crunch for space at South Hall, which is the white house we own on the south end of the property. The Nashville Food Project which is housed in South Hall has grown substantially in recent years with both staff and volunteers, working to feed the homeless and working poor of our community. The growth and impact of this ministry under Tallus leadership is truly a great success story. Our AA meeting that is held each Tuesday and Thursday night is one of the largest and most widely known in town. Many nights, we are told there can be well over 100 people at the AA gathering. Lives are saved, changed, and put back together. Room In the Inn continues to be a vital outreach ministry housing the homeless during the cold winter months. South Hall is doing exactly what we want it to do serving as a hub for mission and outreach in our community, but the space is tight. In many ways, this is a nice problem to have, but a problem nonetheless. At the breakfast, there were other thoughts and concerns raised pertaining to parking challenges, the need to strengthen existing programs, learning lessons from past building campaigns and not getting back into significant debt, looking into the possibility of before and after care for our preschool to serve working parents, serving as a non-profit incubator (as we have done for TNFP) and a host of other things. Whats exciting is that there is a lot happening at Woodmont right now and a lot of energy behind all of our ministries. There are so many ideas and possibilities as we look to the future. We want to keep this spirit alive and continue to live our mission statement: Growing disciples of Christ by Seeking, God, Sharing Love, and Serving Others. Our youth wing renovation is

well underway and should be completed by the later part of March. This will be a tremendous improvement and a space that our youth can enjoy and be very proud of. Thom Schuyler, our staff member liaison for mission and outreach, has been working with a committee to address some of the immediate challenges that we face at South Hall. There are multiple ideas and solutions being offered. As we continue our strategic planning process, I hope we will remember why the church exists and what it is called to do. I hope we will work hard to maintain all of our ministries that have a profound impact on the lives of so many people inside and outside of our walls. I hope that we will give thanks to God that ours is a busy, active, and vibrant church in an age where many churches struggle and cannot claim that as the case. Most importantly, I hope we will not stop looking to the future, building on our rich history, and prayerfully discerning what God is calling us to be and do next. Simply maintaining the status quo is not enough. We must continue to challenge ourselves to think and pray about what God is calling us to do on this corner. Thank you for your prayers and input into this important process. It will be exciting to see what the future holds! Let us remember the powerful and challenging words of Jesus: Go and make Disciples. Love God and love your neighbor as yourself. Just as you do for the least of these, you do for me. Deny self and follow me.
Blessings,

Thin Places by Dr. C. Roy Stauffer, Minister of Church Life

(Sharlande Sledge, "Thin Places") A Thin Place (or moment) is when God breaks through our worldly living. A "holy worldliness" Dietrich Bonhoeffer called it. It comes from developing a spiritual life which sees God in everything and gives you a feeling of "oneness" with God and all creation. Some have called it "space for grace" meaning a daily discipline of quietness, meditation, prayer and solitude when you feel God's presence (peace and joy) more than ever. "Thin Places" have traditionally been identified with sacred physical locations like Jerusalem, Rome, or Mecca, or anywhere else our hearts are opened. Others find "thin places" through nature (mountain tops, beaches, wilderness areas), the arts (music, poetry, dance) or any other place or activity in which the boundary between one's self and the world momentarily disappear. I've often felt such a "thin place" when I was skiing and standing all alone on a mountain peak, looking out at the grandeur of God's creation. A way to find it regularly is to have a daily "quiet time" with God. Mother Teresa was once asked by a reporter what she said to God when she prayed. "Oh, I don't say anything," she replied. "I just listen." "Ah," said the reporter, "and what does God say to you when you listen?" "Nothing," she said. "He listens too." Thin Place. John Killinger also writes recently about evangelist Bill Graham and how he says for years, when he was younger and was traveling the world as a preacher, his prayers were for his revival campaigns, for the workers who prepared them, for the people he believed needed to be saved, for himself and the singers and others who were most responsible for the success of his revivals. But when he became old and infirm and no longer able to go out on campaigns, and especially as his wife was dying and he himself was feeling the debilitations of age, he spent more time just being with God. He said he'd just sit on the front porch of his cabin near Montreat, North Carolina, and experience a completely different kind of prayer - prayer in which he rested in God and surrendered everything to God's will. There was no more anxiety to do well or make a difference in the world. Now it was time to turn everything over to God, to relax, to merely be there with God. (John Killinger, Outgrowing Church, p. 76-77)

From the seventh grade to twelfth growing up, my favorite week of the summer was the week at church camp or Conference. And my favorite part of church camp, at least spiritually, was what we called "Morning Watch." I don't know if they still do it at Bethany Hills or not, but we would get up and the first thing we did was to go out somewhere on the Conference grounds and spend thirty minute alone with God. You might use the time reading Scripture, praying, listening, or just watching nature and feeling part of God's world. Somehow it made you feel so peaceful and close to God and all's right with the world.
Today such moments are called "Thin Places." In Celtic Spirituality they say that heaven and earth are only three feet apart, but in the thin places that distance is even smaller. A Thin Place is where the veil that separates heaven and earth is lifted and one is able to receive a glimpse of the glory of God. As one person put it, "It's where I can touch the edge of heaven." "Thin places," the Celts call this space Both seen and unseen, Where the door between this world And the next is cracked open for a moment And the light is not all on the other side. God shaped space. Holy.

How different our lives would be if we would learn to do this earlier in our lives. ~Roy

Priesthood of All Believers by Andra Moran, Creative Director for "The Bridge"
I love our Church! I love Woodmont, and I love our denomination, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The approach to theology of the Disciples Church rings true in my heart. I love the Disciples emphasis on understanding that all people have a gift of ministry to share. In doctrinal language, this is called the "priesthood of all believers," meaning, of course, that we all are ministers in the world. One of my favorite songs says it well: Some will be the teachers of life, some the preachers of love, some the fathers, some the mothers; Some will be the ones who will care, some will listen and share, serving God as they serve each other. Many gifts, One Spirit of Love. This week, a dear friend of mine has been in the hospital for heart surgery. Chris and I were roommates in college, and long standing band mates. Chris has played guitar at The Bridge many times, and is a familiar face to Woodmont. For me and Stephen, he is family, so this has been a worrisome time. Chris stayed with me and Stephen for several nights before the surgery, and all of us have been back and forth to the hospital and felt the anxiety that can accompany medical problems. On the day of Chris' surgery, I spent the day at the hospital. On hour six in the waiting room, I was feeling antsy and frustrated. I went for a walk in the hall, only to run into Ann Luther in her crisp, white lab coat. She was happy to see me; warm and welcoming, and wonderful to help me navigate the maze of the hospital. If you know Ann, you won't be

surprised to hear that she was kindly offering encouragement to all of us gathered there for the surgery. When I got home, there were a few messages on my phone from people I have the joy of worshiping and working alongside at The Bridge each Sunday! I had Facebook messages and notes of prayers, asking if things were going well and even an offer to meet a Woodmont

friend for dinner after a long day. For me, care like this is of the ways we see the Priesthood of All Believers at work. Woodmont, your people have ministered to me! Sometimes churches wrestle with the frustration of how there will be 'ministry to the minister.' I can tell you first hand that ministry is alive and joyous at Woodmont-- and it moves freely between the congregation and the ministerial staff. This week, and many

times since we have come to Woodmont, people in our congregation have given me comfort. You have been the preachers of love, the ones who care and share and serve God through both your actions and your words. Thank you! ~Andra

Mission & Outreach

Room In the Inn
We've had an outpouring of support from members as we scrambled to provide emergency shelter for 14 homeless men per night during these past weeks of frigid weather. While we all hope that kind of cold weather is behind us, we want to be prepared to serve our neighbors in need in the future. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE ADDED TO OUR LIST OF VOLUNTEERS TO HELP ON AN EMERGENCY BASIS DURING THE WEEK, please email Christine Reed at contactingchristine@gmail.com or call her at 794-1054. Dinner hosting, overnight hosting, dropping off breakfast foods or lunch sacks are the ways you can help. You can tag team with friends and family members. We are the body of Christ and it takes many hands and feet working together to make this ministry possible. Thanks to all of you who have jumped in and answered the call to serve already.

Stewardship Thought

We give in response to Gods love. God first gave to us; love responds in return. Giving is living, the angel said, Go feed the hungry sweet charitys bread. And must I keep giving and giving again My selfish and querulous answer ran? Ah, no, said the angel, her eye pierced me through Just give til the Master stops giving to you.

Woodmont Friends, You have blessed me in so many ways during my recent surgery and recovery. Your cards, calls, flowers, visits, grocery shopping, driving for PT, delicious meals, and most importantly your prayers have been so meaningful for me. All of you are special to me and I do so appreciate your thoughtfulness and caring for me during this time. Hugs and Blessings, Pat Malone
