Thank you so much for purchasing Hair Romances frst ebook - 30 Days of Twist and Pin Hairstyles - and get ready
to have some fun with your hair!
At Hair Romance we want you to love your hair. We believe that the way to happy hair is to love the hair you
have.
Youll fnd this ebook full of hair-spiration and useful tips and tricks for you to create fabulous hairstyles at home.
If I can create these styles in my own hair, I know you can too. I am not a hairdresser, however I have spent a
lot of time in salons and learnt a lot of stylists tricks. My sister and her best friend were both hairdressers and ran
their own salon and my best friend is a hairdresser. We met over ten years ago in the same street that I met my
husband. Thats where my hair romance began.
I hope you enjoy the 30 hairstyles I have created in this book. They are all modelled in my own hair, but I have
also provided suggestions for variations if your hair is shorter, longer or different textures.
I believe your hair is your best accessory, and you should have fun with your hair.
I welcome your feedback and if you have any questions or queries please contact me via Twitter @hairromance

I have naturally curly hair which you may know from reading Hair Romance. For this 30 Day Hairstyle
challenge I have started by blowdrying my hair straight. Its not that these styles dont work with curls (some
look even better!) but that straight hair is a good consistent base to start with for styling hair.
A lot of updos require more texture for them to hold so they can be great second day hair. You get great
mileage out of your straight hair on day one, then after you sleep on it and wake up with a few kinks, pop it
up in one of these hairstyles and no-one will know...
If your hair is naturally straight or wavy, congratulations! You are in the perfect spot to start styling your hair.
If your hair is soft or fne, texturising products can add some weight to your hair to help keep these styles in
place.
However, if like me, you have hair that can be a bit confused am I curly, or straight, or frizzy or...? - well, I
recommend starting by blowdrying your hair straight. See page fve for blowdrying tips.
Good foundations
Recommended styling products
I often recommend second day hair for upstyles as freshly washed hair is very soft and can be harder to style into a specfc shape.
If you have just washed your hair, or your have soft or fne hair, these products can be a good foundation for creating upstyles that
will last all day.
Volumising mousse or thickening sprays - apply to towel dried hair and blowdry for added volume and texture. I recommend
Original & Mineral Atonic Thickening Spritz or Goldwell StyleSign Double Boost Root Lift Spray.
Sea Salt sprays - apply to towel dried hair and allow to air dry or blowdry. It can also be sprayed lightly on dry hair. Try Evo Salty Dog
Cocktail Beach Spray or KMS Hairplay Sea Salt Spray.
Dry Shampoo - More of a product than a shampoo - see my reviews here. I like to use Batiste, Klorane or KMS Makeover Spray.
Hairspray - One of the most useful products for your hair. I love Evo Helmet Finishing Spray or Redken Fashion Work 12.

Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles 5
Start with a good blowdryer I highly recommend Parlux. Parlux hairdryers are more expensive as
they are a professional dryer, but its why your hair looks so good after a blowdry from the salon. It will
also last. I have had mine for 10 years!
Use a nozzle on your dryer All good dryers come with a nozzle attachment. These are to direct the air fow so
you get a smoother blowdry. Always use it. Angle your dryer so the nozzle is pointing down towards the end of
your hair and always blowdry from root to tip.
Use a heat protectant very important to protect your hair from damage when heat styling there are lots of
these on the market, and depending on your hair type you may prefer a spray or a cream. I can recommend
Kerastase Paris Resistance Force Ciment Thermiq, KMS Flat Out Hot Press Spray, Redken Spray Starch and Evo
Icon Welder Hot Tool Shaper.
Use a good brush - good tools make the job easier. For a voluminous blowdry (good for Days 2, 8 & 15) use a round brush. If you
are also using irons to straighten your hair, try this fat wrap method using a paddle brush or styling brush.
Work in sections start by blowdrying your hair loosely with your fngers instead of a brush until its about 70% dry. Then section
your hair from ear to ear and clip up the top section. Blowdry your hair with holding a brush underneath and the dryer nozzle
pointing down the hair shaft so you get a smoother fnish. Working in small sections will take a bit longer but will give your more
control and get a better result.
Use the cool shot button Parlux call it the Cool Shot button but many hairdryers will have a button that will allow a blast of
cold air. Heat will make your hair straight and cold air will set it to keep its shape. Use the cool shot button as you go to set your
blowdry.
Finish with a serum to add gloss and shine, try Original & Mineral Frizzy Logic Shine Serum or Redken Glass 01. Finish with a spray of
medium weight hairspray to hold the style.
These tips will give you a great fnish when you blowdry your hair and a perfect base for styling your hair into these fabulous Twist &
Pin hairstyles!

6 Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
Styling Tools
Bobby Pins
I recommend Goriki pins. They are
available from hairdressing supply
stores, or ask your stylist.
Pins can be crossed over in an X
shape for a stronger hold.
Fringe pins
These pins are fantastic
for chignon and French
roll styles, and even
securing braids, especially
if your hair is thick.
How to use:
When securing bun: Gently hook a bit
of hair from your bun, then turn the pin
outwards and grab some hair outside the
bun, pivot the pin inwards and push under
the bun catching more hair underneath.
You can also weave them through
your hair, or squeeze them a little when
inserting them so they spring into place
with extra hold.

Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles 7
Paddle brush
Great for smoothing
hair. Use this brush to
blowdry with the wrap
method.
Round or Conical Brush
Used to create volume and
waves when blowdrying.
Wrap ends of your hair
around to create ficks, use
your cool shot button to set.
Hair Elastics
Use to secure your ponytails,
and hair sections under buns.
Find the right size and
strength to hold your hair. I
prefer snag-free elastics with
no metal connectors.
Comb
Use the wide
side to de-tangle
wet hair and the fne
side to backcomb for
added height and volume.
Tail comb
Use the tail to section
hair and create neat
part lines.
This fne comb is also
great to use with
straightening irons to
ensure there are no
knots.
This simple technique will help will many of the styles,
especially Day 3, Day 9, Day 10 and Day 20.
Take two small sections of hair and cross over and twist
together.
Use a bobby pin to secure, pushing up and twist the pin
to the side. This hides the bobby pin underneath your hair.
Used repeately, this forms a kind of twisted braid.
This technique is the basis of many of my hairstyles.
You take small sections of your hair and twist it around one
fnger. Then use your index fnger on the other hand to loop it.
Depending on how long your hair is, twist into a small bun or
a fgure-8 shape, coiling the hair around. Use a strong bobby
pin to pin in place, weaving the pin through to hold. Put
bobby pins through more than one twist to ensure they stay
in place.

8 Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
DAY 1
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
1. Part your hair to the side, or wherever your natural part falls.
2. Gently brush or pull your hair back into a ponytail off to the side and
secure with an elastic.
3. Have a few bobby pins at the ready and start by taking a small section
of your ponytail and twisting it.
4. Using the Twist & PIn technique from page 8, twist your hair into a little
knot shape at the base of your ponytail and secure it with bobby pins.
5. Continue with the rest of your ponytail, ensuring that you cover all
around the hair elastic.
6. Leave a section in the centre of the ponytail till last. Twist and pin this in
the centre of the ponytail, on top of the other sections.
I like to leave some hair loose at the front around my face, or you can twist
your fringe/bangs back for a different look.
Short hair variation:
Dont worry about too much twisting, instead try folding your hair and pin
small sections so that you cover your hair elastic.
Long hair variation:
Twist more, it will create tighter sections that will stay in place more easily.
Cross your bobby pins over for a secure fnish. You could also braid each
section before you twist it to create an intricate braided bun.

BACK TO
T O P
DAY 2
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This style works well with some curl in your hair. If your hair is straight you
may want to curl the ends with a curling iron before you begin.
1. Start by creating a deep side part.
2. Gently brush or pull your hair back into a low pontail at the nape of your
neck.
3. Twist your ponytail upwards from the nape of your neck, as for a French
twist, but angle it over to the left side.
4. Use a mix of bobby pins and fringe pins (especially if your hair is thick) to
secure the twist, pinning all along the twist.
5. Pin up any loose sections or layers around your face.
6. Leave the ends loose for that French casual chic feel.
Fine hair variation:
Use a foam insert to twist your hair around this will create the bulk in the
roll and still leave your hair free and loose at the top.
Short hair variation:
You will have less hair loose at the top - either make the ends of your hair
spiky or tuck them into the twist for a neat fnish.
Long hair variation:
If your hair is very long this style will be harder to achieve, and will need a
lot more pins. If your hair is fne and long you should tuck half the twist in
and this will allow you to keep the ends loose.

DAY 2: THE LOOSE FRENCH TWIST & PIN
BACK TO
T O P
DAY 3
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This hairstyle looks best with a bit of curl so start by blowdrying your hair
with a round brush to create volume and ficks at the end, or use a curling
wand. If your hair is naturally curly head to step 2.
1. Using the same technique as for How to wear a headscarf like Blake
Lively, use the Twist & Pin technique described on page 8 to twist
sections of hair together.
2. Repeating this technique creates a look similar to braiding. Take
small sections of hair from each side, twist together and pin in place.
Continue down, pinning about 3-4 sections on the side.
3. To create the ponytail, take a section of hair from underneath, wind it
around the rest of your hair and pin in place, making a hair band for a
side ponytail.
4. Use bobby pins to secure it in place underneath.
Fine hair variation:
For added volume, backcomb your hair at the crown of your head to
create height at the top.
Long hair variation:
I recommend using a hair elastic to secure the ponytail and then cover
the band with a section of hair. This will be more secure.

DAY 4
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This is a great style for when you are growing out a fringe/bangs, or if you
love having your hair off your face. The front is a Dutch braid and follows
your hairline and then twists and pins into a chignon behind your ear.
1. Start by parting your hair, this is where the braid will start. Take a small
section from the front of your part, about one inch wide and split into
three.
2. Start the braid by weaving these together backwards, by crossing the
sections underneath. A Dutch braid is the reverse of a French braid,
where you bring the sections under instead of over.
3. Add sections of hair from your hairline into the braid as you follow your
hairline towards your ear.
4. Once you have braided to behind your ear, twist and pin the braid into
a little knot or bun and pin below your ear on your hairline.
5. Next take small sections of your hair and twist and pin around the frst
bun. You want to take sections equal to the braid so all the twists are
similar in size.
6. Use some fringe pins to secure the braid fat against your head as it can
tend to lift forward.
No braid variation:
If your hair is too layered to braid, or it is too diffcult, you can twist your hair
tightly away from your face and pin in place.
Long hair variation:
If your hair is very thick, you may want to secure it in a ponytail frst like in
Day 1. If your hair is mermaid length, you could make several small braids
out of the ponytail and then twist and pin these in place. Gorgeous!

DAY 5
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This simple bun hairstyle changes with the addition of a fower. It would
look so different with a diamonte brooch, or a scarf. What accessory
could you use in this hairstyle?
1. Brush all your hair back into a side ponytail and secure with an elastic.
2. Backcomb your ponytail to make it seem like your have more hair.
3. Gently twist and fold sections around your elastic into a bun.
4. Use a comb to gently smooth the top of the bun for a smooth fnish.
5. Clip in a fower and youre ready to go.
Short/Fine hair variation
Still not enough hair after backcombing? See page 8 for donut fllers or try
extensions.
Long hair variation
This is perfect for long hair just skip the backcombing if you already
have enough hair!

DAY 6
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This gorgeous do would be a beautiful upstyle for an
event, yet is relaxed enough for keeping your hair up on
hot days.
This is a combination of a Dutch braid from the right and a
braid from the left that crosses over and tucks in.
1. Part your hair to the right (or wherever your natural part
falls).
2. Take a section of your hair from your part to your left
ear and clip away. This will be your braid (plait).
3. Starting on the right, near your temple, take a section
of hair and split into three.
4. Braid from the right in a Dutch braid but only take
in new sections of hair from the bottom, along your
hairline.
5. Continue the braid along your hairline until you reach
your left ear. Finish the braid and secure the end with
a clear elastic. Stretch the braid to make it appear
thicker and more even.
6. Twist the end of the left braid back and tuck it under
and pin it. Dont worry if its not that neat as the right
braid will sit on top over it.
7. Unclip the right section of hair and loosely braid it.
8. Pin the left braid over the top of the right braid. Hide
the ends under the braid near your right ear and pin in
place.

DAY 7
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
What a difference an accessory makes!
I love this idea for a bride, and think adding something blue to your hair is a fun
twist on tradition.
These fowers are actually a necklace. If you love the look, you could also pin
a row of silk fowers over this style. What do you already own that could be
repurposed into a hair accessory? Necklaces can be used as headbands or
ribbons could be added into braids. Perhaps a brooch that can be pinned into
your hair?
Even a scarf can be tied into a bow or twisted into a fower to adorn your hair.
Have fun with your hair and try something new with your hair.
See Day 6 for the full how to.
Long hair variation
If your hair is beautiful and long, why not continue the braids to form a ring braid?
This is where you keep braiding your hair all around your head. You can make a
crown of hair with these braids. Simply gorgeous.

DAY 8
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This style is all about volume, but it should look soft and not stiff. The trick is to
backcomb and add texture inside the style, but leave a thin layer of hair that sits
over the top to give it a smooth and soft fnish.
1. Wash your hair with a volumising shampoo and blowdry for as much volume
as your can get!
2. Lift up the top section and backcomb from the crown of your head forward.
Remember to leave a layer of hair from your hairline that will cover the fnished
beehive.
3. Take a section from ear to ear down and pull into a low ponytail.
4. Twist down and then twist it up, similar to a French roll, and pin in place.
5. Take your backcombed hair on your crown and start to shape it into the
beehive. You may need to tease some more to get a rounder shape. Spritz
with hairspray for extra hold.
6. Gently brush the top layer of hair to smooth it. Secure this section in a very
loose ponytail.
7. Tuck the end of the ponytail under and pin this in place. This will create the
rounder shape at the back.
8. Finish with a mist of medium hold hairspray and pin in any loose pieces.
Short/Fine hair variation
Still not enough hair after backcombing? Refer to Page 75 - More styling tricks for
donut fllers or try extensions.
Long hair variation
If your hair is thick and long, your beehive may end up looking more like Marge
Simpson! Why not try the beehive top on a half-up half-down hairstyle?
24
DAY 8: THE LOOSE BEEHIVE
BACK TO
T O P
DAY 9
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
1. Add some extra height on your crown by gently teasing and
backcombing.
2. To hold the height, take small sections of hair above your ears, twist
together and pin in place off to the left side.
3. Continue down, and Twist & Pin another section on the side.
4. Pull your hair into a side ponytail and secure with an elastic.
5. Cover the elastic by wrapping a section of hair around it and bobby pin
it in place.
6. Pop a giant fower on top and youre done!
Short/longer hair variation
This easy style will work for all lengths, your ponytail will just be shorter or
longer.
If you want to use a ponytail extension, the fower is a great cover.

BACK TO
T O P
DAY 10
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This hairstyle is as easy as tying a knot!
1. Take a small section from each side, twist them together and tie in a
knot.
2. The trick is getting it to stay in place try a texturising product if your hair
is slipping out of place.
3. Use a bobby pin underneath to keep the knot in place too. See page 8
for a closer look at how to pin this.

BACK TO
T O P
DAY 11
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
1. Start by parting your hair, this is where the braid will start. Leave a 1-2
inch section from your part to your ear out and clip the rest of your hair
back out of the way.
2. Take a small piece from the front of your part, about one inch wide and
split into three.
3. Start to French braid along your hairline, weaving the right section over
the middle, and the left over the right.
4. Add in sections of hair from your hairline into the braid as you follow your
hairline towards your ear. Continue to where you want your ponytail to
sit.
5. Gather the rest of your hair around to make the ponytail and secure with
an elastic.
6. Take a small piece of hair to wrap around to cover your elastic and
secure with a bobby pin underneath.
7. You may need to place a few fringe pins to secure the braid fat to your
head.
Short/Fine hair variation
Gently backcomb the ponytail for more volume.
Long hair variation
This is perfect for long hair you could even swap the ponytail for a braid.
30
DAY 11: THE FRENCH BRAID PONYTAIL
BACK TO
T O P
DAY 12
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
I have included the French Roll with a Twist tutorial on page 72 which is the
same technique, though this style has more volume and a bit more punk.
1. Pin back your fringe, or the front section of your hair. I like a little bit of
height, so you can backcomb a little to add extra volume.
2. Take a section from each side of your hairline and bring together into a
twist at the back of your head.
3. Twist the section around your fnger and pin in place.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 until all your hair is twisted and pinned into a line.
Short hair variation
You can always backcomb your hair to make the twists stand out more.
Long hair variation
You can secure the sections with hair elastics before twisting them to make
it stronger ie. Have 4-5 smaller ponytails in a line that you then twist and
pin. This will be more stable and will make this style easier to do.
32
DAY 12: THE TWIST & PIN BUN-HAWK
BACK TO
T O P
DAY 13
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This is a little more advanced, but it is worth the effort. If youre not very
good at braiding, get someone to help you.
1. Clip up the top section of your hair out of the way.
2. Brush your hair and put your head upside down.
3. Take a section of hair from the nape of your neck and split into three.
4. To do a Dutch (reverse) braid, baid the sections underneath each other.
Add hair in from both sides, always bringing it underneath.
5. Continue to the top of your crown and then gather all your hair into a
high ponytail and secure with an elastic.
6. Take a section of hair and wrap it around to hide the elastic and pin it in
place with a bobby pin.
7. Flip your ponytail forward and pin on top of your head. You can also use
a curling iron to create more shape and curl in your ponytail.
Variations
This braid would also look great with a messy top knot or a donut bun.
34
DAY 13: THE REVERSE BRAIDED PONYTAIL
BACK TO
T O P
DAY 14
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
Have lots of bobby pins and fringe pins handy for this style! Depending on
your hair texture you may need a foam roller to wrap your hair around and
pin inside the curl.
1. Start by gently twisting your hair round on the left from your temple. I
have left my fringe (bangs) out, but you can also twist your layers back.
2. Twist it around following your hairline to the nape of your neck. Pop a
few fringe pins in to keep it in place.
3. Heres where it can be a little fddly as you need to roll all your hair up
like sausage. I start by wrapping some hair around my index fnger and
to create the centre and then rolling it up like a ribbon. Depending on
your hair texture you may need a foam roller to wrap your hair around
and pin inside the curl.
4. Once its in a fair sausage roll shape start pinning! As I said, keep those
pins handy as you wont have a free hand to look for them.
5. To get that neat fnish on the side I open the curl up so you can the roll
and pin it in the centre.
Short/Fine hair variation
You may need to backcomb to create volume and shape in your roll.
Long hair variation
Unless your hair is fne, you wont get such a neat and small silhouette, but
you could make a beautiful 1940s style roll.

DAY 15
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
1. Wash your hair with a volumising shampoo and blowdry for as much
volume as you can get!
2. Lift up the top section and backcomb from the crown of your head
forward. Remember to leave a layer of hair from your hairline that will
cover the fnished beehive.
3. Take a section from ear to ear down and pull into a low pony.
4. Twist this up, similar to a French roll and pin in place.
5. Take your backcombed hair on your crown and start to shape it. You
may need to tease some more to get a rounder shape. Hairspray this
section for maximum hold. Pin this in place.
6. Next take the top layer of hair you didnt tease and smooth this over the
beehive shape.
7. Pull all the loose hair together at the back, gently twist and tuck the
ends into the beehive and pin in place.
8. Finish with a mist of medium hold hairspray and pin in any loose pieces.
9. Tie a headband, ribbon or scarf around to fnish the look.
Short/Fine hair variation
Still not enough hair after backcombing? See page 8 for donut fllers or try

DAY 16
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This is so simple, just make sure you have some pins handy for when you get
the chignon in the right spot.
1. Start by twisting your hair up and along your neck from the right.
2. Twist all your hair together (almost in a side ponytail) then twist up and
around into a chignon.
3. Bobby pins will keep this bun in place, or use fringe pins if your hair is
thicker.
Variation
You could make this into a larger side bun by using a padded donut fller as
on page 75.

DAY 16: THE TWISTED BUN
BACK TO
T O P
DAY 17
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This is a fun braided twist on a high bun.
1. Brush all your hair into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic.
2. Leave a piece of hair from your ponytail free to cover the elastic, but
wait to do that at the end.
3. Split your ponytail into three sections and braid it. Secure the end with a
small clear elastic.
4. Roll the end of the braid under and pin into a bun.
5. Take that last section of hair and wrap it around your hair elastic to give
this hairstyle a neat fnish.
Long hair variation
Make sure you have hair elastics that are strong enough to hold your hair
up in a high pony. If your hair drops, youre using the wrong elastics. Or try
hair bungees.
You could even do three braids, then combine them in one braid to make
this bun.

DAY 18
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This is such a simple style. I have added a headband to the front but this is
optional.
1. Brush your hair and if using a headband, place this in front.
2. Make a very loose and large braid, starting approximately level with
your ears in the middle of your hair.
3. Add in very large sections as you braid - you should aim to add in all
your hair in only three sections.
4. Finish the braid and secure with an elastic.
5. Tuck the braid underneath and use bobby pins to secure it. Make sure
you place a pin through your elastic for added hold.
6. Gently stretch out the braid to soften the fnish.

DAY 19
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
Another great Twist & Pin variation!
1. Take a section of hair and Twist & Pin into a little bun in the middle of
your head.
2. Do the left, then right buns at the top. Then with the remaining hair do
two buns underneath.
3. This can be pinned neatly but I like it a little messy so leave some ends
poking out.
Variations
There are fve messy Twist & Pin buns in this style, but you can do as many
or as few suit your hair texture.

DAY 20
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
1. Brush your hair and leave your fringe (bangs) loose (if you have a fringe,
that is).
2. Take a small section of hair above your left ear, split into three and make
a basic braid. Secure the end with an elastic or clip.
3. Repeat with a section above your right ear, hold the end of that braid
with an elastic or clip.
4. Take the section above the left braid and make a third braid.
5. Pull all three braids together and twist them together at the back of
your head.
6. Use a bobby pin to secure them together and pin to your hair
underneath.
7. Remove the clips/elastics at the end of the plaits and soften the ends
into the rest of your hair.
Variations
If you hair is too short to reach around, you can pin the plaits at the side
instead.
For long-haired girls this is perfect. It is quick and will keep your hair off your
face but still has a beautiful bohemian feel.

DAY 21
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
1. Gather the top third of your hair, split into three and braid. Secure the
end with an elastic.
2. Repeat with the middle section.
3. For the bottom section, gather your hair at the nape of your neck. Braid
backwards, crossing the sections underneath each other.
4. Back to the frst braid roll this up and pin in underneath.
5. Repeat with the second braid.
6. For the bottom section, roll the braid upwards and pin in place (this is
why we did a backwards braid). This way all the braid look the same.
Variations
Depending on how short your hair is, you may be able to do shorter braids.
Longer hair you may do more braids or make larger rolls. Either would be
lovely.

DAY 22
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
1. Add in volume on the crown by gently backcombing your hair.
2. Brush your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck.
3. Twist the ponytail and fip it up creating a French roll.
4. Leave the ends free at the top and pin the twist in place. The fnish
should be relaxed and leave it slightly messy.
Short/Fine hair variation
You can backcomb your hair underneath to create some more volume.
Fold your hair at the back to create a pleat if you dont have enough hair
to twist up.
Long hair variation
One idea for very long hair is to create a messy bun at the top of the twist.
You can also tuck some of your hair inside the twist but keep the ends
loose for that relaxed feel.
52
DAY 22: THE MESSY TWIST
BACK TO
T O P
DAY 23
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
To do a Dutch (reverse or backwards) braid you cross the sections
underneath each other, rather than over each other. For this braid, only
add in extra hair from underneath.
1. Start on the right side, above your ear. Take a section of hair, split into
three and braid crossing the sections underneath each other.
2. Continue across to your left ear, adding in hair only from the bottom as
you go.
3. Once you reach your left ear, twist the ends around and pin just behind
your ear.
You can watch a video tutorial for this braid in Hair Romance TV Episode 4.
Variations
If you have shorter hair, you can do two braids, one from each side, and
pin them where they meet in the middle.
If you have long hair, you can continue this braid all around your head in a
halo. Ah, I wish my hair was longer!
54
DAY 23: THE SIDE BRAIDED TWIST
BACK TO
T O P
DAY 24
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This is a way to step up your ponytail a notch, but its so easy, anyone can
do it.
1. If adding a headband, put this in place frst. I like to hide the ends of the
headband so leave some hair in front that will be pulled back to cover
the band.
2. Take a small section of hair from each side, from just above your ears,
then twist together and pin in place at the back (see page 8).
3. Gather all your hair into a side ponytail and secure with an elastic.
4. Wrap a piece of hair around the elastic to hide it and give it a perfect
fnish.
Variations
If your hair is too short for a ponytail, you can pin your hair into a mini-
chignon.
If your hair is long, you can either leave it in a long side pony or you could
braid it.

DAY 25
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
1. Part your hair on the right, or wherever your natural part falls.
2. Take a small section from your part at the front and braid it. Pin the
braid across the back of your head horizontally. Secure the end with a
pin.
3. Take a second section beneath the frst and braid it. Pin the braid
across horizontally. Secure the end with a pin.
4. Take a third section below that and braid it. Pin the braid across
horizontally. Secure the end with a pin.
5. Gather the top third of your hair from the left. Twist together and pin
into a mini-bun over the frst braid.
6. Repeat with the second and third braids so you have three buns in a
line.
Variations
You could make this more detailed by adding more braids and buns.
For a differnt look, you could also add braids from both sides to the mini
buns at the back.

DAY 26
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
1. Gently brush or pull your hair back into a high ponytail and secure with
an elastic.
2. Have a few bobby pins at the ready and start by taking a small section
of your ponytail and twisting it.
3. Using the Twist & PIn technique, twist it into a little knot shape at the
base of your ponytail and secure it with bobby pins.
4. Continue with the rest of your ponytail, ensuring that you cover all
around the hair elastic.
5. Leave a section in the centre of the ponytail till last. Twist & Pin this in
the centre of the ponytail, on top of the other sections.
6. I like to leave some hair loose at the front, or you can twist your fringe /
bangs back for a different look.
Short / fne hair variation
Dont worry about too much twisting, just pin small sections so you cover
the hair elastic. Fold small sections of hair and pin them in place.
Long hair variation
Twist more, it will create tighter sections that will stay in place more easily.
Cross your bobby pins over for a secure fnish.

DAY 27
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
Use my classic Twist & Pin technique to create a chignon-style hairstyle to
the side.
1. I start by twisting and pinning a small section from the top left on the
side behind my ear.
2. Next twist and pin a small section from the right, and make a twisted
bun next to the frst section.
3. Keep taking small sections, twist tight around your index fnger, then twist
around your other index fnger and pin in place.
4. It looks great when you overlap sections. Weave your bobby pins
through more than one twist to create a hairstyle that will hold.
Variations
This style is infnitely varied, and if your hair is long, twist more and create
double buns.
For shorter hair, you can twist and fold your hair into a messy chignon. You
can pin hair that is only two inches long.

DAY 28
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
1. Twist your hair back from your hairline on the left side, and keep adding
in to the twist. Use bobby pins or fringe pins to hold in place.
2. Holding the twist in your left hand at your neck, use your right hand to
sweep all your hair over.
3. Whilst holding all your hair in your left hand, take the ends with your right
hand and wind your hair around your left index fnger to form a roll.
4. Gently remove your left hand, hold the roll in place with your right and
start to pin in place. Use a combination of bobby pins and fringe pins,
crossing the bobby pins for added strength.
5. Take a small section from the right hand side and smooth it over the roll
to give a sweeping fnish.
6. Mist with hairspray for added hold.
Variations
If your hair is shorter or fne, try a foam insert to give the roll added shape.
This style best suits medium length hair. For very long or thick hair, it will be
more diffcult to hold your hair in this style but it can look amazing.

DAY 29
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
This is freeform Twist & Pin using the technique explained on page 8.
1. Start at the top and start twisting sections, twist around your fnger and
pin in place.
2. Continue down until all your hair is twisted in place.
3. Weave your bobby pins through more than one twist for added hold.
Variations
There are infnite variations. Start twisting and see what you come up with!
This is a great style for wet hair as you end up with great curls and waves
once your hair is dry.
Long hair variation
See the frst picture -
If your hair is thick or long, try putting half your hair back into a high
ponytail, then pull the rest of your hair back into a mid-height ponytail. This
way, the weight of your hair is supported by the two ponytails, which gives
you more freedom to twist and pin.
66

DAY 30
Hair Romance - 30 Days of Twist & Pin Hairstyles
How to:
1. Start with a voluminous blow dry, ficking out the ends, or use a curling
wand.
2. Gently backcomb your hair at the crown for added height. Clip up the
top half of your hair.
3. Leaving two sections loose on each side, pull the rest of your hair into a
ponytail on the left side.
4. Fold the ponytail up and pin it above the hair elastic, about halfway on
the ponytail. Let the ends of your ponytail hang loose.
5. Take the side sections and pin them around the half ponytail.
6. Its quite a freeform chignon so once you have the underneath pinned,
you have a good foundation to shape the rest of the style. Unclip the
top section, and pin the top layers loosely around the chignon.
7. Use a mirror to check it from different angles until you are happy with
the look.
8. Mist with a medium weight hairspray to fnish.
Variations
As this is a freeform style, you can easily change this to suit your hair length
and texture.
Just keep a mirror to hand to check the shape and customise to your hair
length.

2. Shape the section over and up into a giant twist!
3. Use lots of pins and more hairspray to keep the quiff in place.
4. Take a small section of hair from each side, at the front above your

French Roll with a Twist
1. Pin back your fringe, or the front section of your hair. I like a little bit of height but not too much of a bump.
2. Taking a section from each side of your hairline and bring together into a twist at the back of your head.
3. Twist the section around your fnger and pin into a small bun.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 until all your hair is twisted and pinned into a line.

How to wear a headscarf like Blake Lively
The key to this look is that the headscarf is purely a hair accessory. Its not holding any hair, its just placed around the fnished style.
1. Tease your hair at the crown of your head by gently back-combing.
2. Leaving some hair loose around your hairline, take a small section from each side and pin at the back to keep some volume in
your hair. I did this twice, twisting the sections together and hiding the pin underneath. (see page seven for how-to)
3. Take your headscarf and tie in place between two sections of your hair. Leave some hair loose underneath.
4. Tuck the top of your ears under the scarf and play with your fringe until you are happy and youre done!
I used a square scarf folded on the diagonal but almost any size scarf will do as long at it fts around your head.

Easy braid hairstyle
1. Part your hair I did mine on the
side but this style is also cute with a
centre part.
2. Take a section at the front and split
into three.
3. Plait together in a French braid,
bringing the sections in from
underneath.
4. Braid in sections from the top only,
leaving the rest of your hair to
hang down under the braid.
5. Finish the frst side in a plait and
secure with an elastic.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 on the other side.
7. Tie the two sides together with an
elastic. Hide the elastic by wrapping
a section of hair around it and
pinning it underneath with a bobby pin.
8. Loosen up the braid to give it a messier fnish and youre ready to
go!

More styling tricks
How often do you think stylists add extensions to hairstyles and updos?
The answer is all the time! Not only are extensions for added length, they are mainly used for adding
volume.
If there is a particular style you want to recreate but your hair is too fne or short, consider clip-in
extensions. Synthetic clip-in extensions are not expensive and can really make an updo.
Human hair extensions are more expensive but are more versatile. They can be coloured to match your
hair exactly and can be heat styled to match your hair texture.
If you are creating a special updo for a prom, wedding or special occasion, you should
consider extensions to add that something extra.
Tips for a perfect French roll:
Did you know that to achieve that perfect French roll you can buy foam rolls
to wrap inside your hair?
You can also buy donut shaped fllers to make that perfect top knot or side
chignon. They are available in a few shades, pick one to suit your hair colour.
How to smooth fyaways:
Heres a quick tip I learnt at fashion week. Spray hairspray onto your brush and then gently
brush your hair. You can use an old blush brush in the same way to catch tiny fyaways.
By spraying onto your brush, you dont overapply the product to your hair and end up with
a crispy fnish. Theres just enough hold to catch all the small fyaways and smooth your hair
giving a perfect fnish.
