Proposedthesiswork:ElectromagneticModelingofComplex&ElectricallyLargeStructures

Description The proposed work for the doctoral programme is on Computational Electromagnetics in the area of EMI/EMC. The work aims in modelling andestimation ofelectromagneticbehaviourassociatedwithlarge and complex structures. A lot of techniquesandcommercialtoolsareavailableforsolvingelectromagnetic problems. These tools and techniques are usefulinpredictingtheEMIissuesassociatedwithsystems. The electromagnetic simulationmainlyimpliesthenumericalsolutionofMaxwellsequationsforelectromagnetic fields for a given structure and specified environment.Severalmethodsareavailable(FDTD,FEM,TLM, PEEC, ) and each of them are known to be difficult to use because of limitationseitherwithrespectto frequency, details representation etc. Typically the problem solving involves models with millions of unknowns. Even though recent computer system have increased the efficiency of solving these EM problems, when it comes to large problems typically associated with EMI/EMC problems, as in the case of modellingradarcrosssectionofaircraft, orinterferencebetweentheantennaeonaship, orfieldsdueto harness wires inside automobiles, or the field inside a shielded chamber for EMI/EMC testsetc.,thetime and memory requirement for is still ahandicap.Ageneralruleisthataproblem involvingNunknowns, the memory requirement is proportional to N 2 and the CPU time is proportional to N 3. Lot of hybrid numerical methods such as those utilising combinations of Boundary Element Methods and Geometrical Theory ofDiffractionarealsobeingdeveloped. Undertheproposedprogramme, itisplannedtocarryout work in the area of developing techniques for increasing the efficiency in analysis and estimation of electromagnetic fields associated with EMI/EMC problems involving complex structures. The work planned is proposed to utilise the existing modelling tools available as well as to use the mathematical modellingbasedonexistingcodesandoptimisethesame.
