ROOFS
Insulation is typically used between and over joists. If using the loft for storage or living purposes it may be better to look at insulating the rafters. APPLICATIONS:

1 2 3
12

LOFT
Loft insulation is traditionally laid at the ceiling joist level with the attic space above a cold zone. Building Regulations suggests a minimum installed thickness of 270mm laid in between and across the ceiling joists. This is usually 100mm between and 170mm across. Fitting 2 layers in this way removes the cold bridging of the ceiling joists and ensures there are no gaps in the insulation layer and preventing the escape of warm air into the cold attic space above.

RAFTER
Rafter insulation is normally installed between, between and under or between and over the rafters to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations. This will create a warm zone below the roof which can be used as a room, hence the term Room-in-Roof.

FLAT
Flat roof insulation normally requires a high degree of compression resistance to allow foot trafc for maintenance.

MATERIALS:

Glass Mineral WOOl

Glass mineral wool is made from sand and recycled glass, limestone and soda ash. These are the same ingredients that are used to make familiar glass objects such as window panes or glass bottles. The glass is spun to form millions of ne bres. A resin is used to bind the bres together to form a mat of material. The density of the product determines whether the insulation is a lightweight quilt supplied in rolls, a exible slab or a rigid slab, and its thermal insulation value. Non combustible and achieves the highest A+ Euroclass rating.

ROcK Mineral WOOl

Rock mineral wool is made mainly from volcanic rock, typically basalt and/or dolomite. An increasing proportion is now recycled material from slag, a waste product from blast furnaces. The materials are melted and then spun into ne bres. A resin is used to bind the bres together to form a mat of insulation. Non combustible and achieves the highest A+ Euroclass rating.

PIR
PIR provides premium thermal performance and is more effective than most other traditional insulation types. PIR is made by blending together materials to form a rigid foam insulation product. The heat generated during the reaction enable gases to evaporate and become trapped within cells delivering premium thermal performance characteristics. Offering superior thermal performance to most products commonly available, PIR is available in an extensive range of thicknesses suitable for a wide range of applications.

SHeeps WOOl
Sheeps wool insulation provides a high performance and sustainable solution to both consumption of energy and the effects of climate change. Wool actually generates heat when it absorbs moisture.

PHenOlic FOam
Phenolic foams have a high strength / density relationship as they are lightweight but strong, supplied as rigid foam boards and have the highest density of rigid board products. It has the advantage of being a very thin board.

MUlTi-laYereD FOils
These consist of multiple sheets of aluminised polyester separated by thin sheets of polyethylene foam. They are lightweight and exible membranes, to be effective the outer faces must face an unventilated cavity in the construction.

RigiD POlYUreTHane (PUR)

Polyurethane (PUR) insulations are manufactured by chemical reaction between polyalcohols and isocyanates. The mixed components give off heat when they react and form a rigid thermosetting polymer. The heat given off evaporates a volatile liquid blowing agent contained in the mixture which produces a network of small bubbles in the material. The gas from the blowing agent remains in the cells and serves to improve the thermal performance of the material.

Rockwool Roll is a medium density multi-application insulation mat. This versatile Roll is suitable for thermal insulation of roof spaces in domestic, commercial and industrial buildings. It is also useful for improving the acoustic performance of suspended ceilings. Roll is produced in 1200mm width. The packaging provides cutting guidelines should the product be required in 400mm or 600mm widths. By cutting through the product with a long serrated blade, this will ensure the material can be cut to the desired widths. Alternatively, Rollbatt is supplied pre-cut to 400mm (x3) or 600mm (x2) widths.

Fire Rockwool RW slabs are certied by Lloyds Register of Shipping as non-combustible materials for use on: Fixed offshore installations M ED classed ships DTLR MCA Approval Rockwool RW slabs are rated non-combustible in accordance with ISO 1182 and IMO A. 799. Water resistance Rockwool RW slabs are highly water repellent. Where it is necessary to maintain water repellency subsequent to heating at elevated temperatures, the use of WRG grade slabs is recommended. Acoustics Rockwool stone wool works in two distinct ways to reduce noise, either by impeding the transmission of sound through an element of the structure or by absorption of sound at the surface. Noise absorption is expressed as a factor between 0 and 1.0. The more sound that a surface absorbs, the higher its absorption coefcient.

Knauf Insulations Earthwool Loft Roll may not look like any insulation youre used to, but thats because its earthy brown colour represents a level of sustainability unlike any other insulation. Its unmatched eco-friendly credentials are thanks to the incorporation of revolutionary ECOSE Technology, a new bio-based, formaldehyde-free binder technology creating the next generation of insulation products. The result of ve years of intensive research, it uses rapidly renewable materials instead of petro-based chemicals and gives products like Earthwool Loft Roll their distinctive natural brown colour. Once again, Knauf Insulation is way out in front when it comes to insulating... naturally.
