Bearing Fits Page 1 of 1

Bearing Fits
Bearings are usually fitted with an interference fit on one race and a sliding fit on the other. Normally, if
the load direction is stationary relative to the housing then the sliding fit is between the outer race and
the housing. If the load is rotating with the shaft then the sliding fit is between the shaft and the inner
race. In other words the load direction should be stationary relative to the sliding race. This is to reduce
creep and subsequent wear of the sliding race. Cylindrical roller bearings often use a transitional fit
instead of a sliding fit when axial movement of the race is not required.
The table gives fits used between bearings and their housings.

Rolling Element Bearing Assemblies
load direction = Constant direction or rotating
rotation = shaft or housing rotating
load type = roller bearing supports heavier radial load; ball bearing supports axial and radial load
LH bearing = ball locates shaft in both directions
RH bearing = roller accommodates axial thermal expansions
seating = the inner and outer rings may be made interference fits to suit any combination of load and
rotation
o Arranged Taper Roller Bearings
load direction = constant direction
rotation = shaft or housing rotating
load type = radial and axial capacity
RH bearing = bearings in 0 arrangement for wider bearing spread
LH bearing = adjusted against RH bearing on inner ring to required preload
seating = Push fit on shaft to allow for correct adjustment
