CHARA DASHA A CASE STUDY IN JAIMINI ASTROLOGY WITH THE USE OF VARGAS

Terminologies used in Vedic astrology:

Aspects : the aspects of a sign and planets in them to the Ascendant play a significant role in determining the nature and abilities of the individual. Karta Any planet aspecting/joining Lagna in the Rasi, Drekhanna or Navamsa charts is known as Karta. i) In the rasi chart Sun, Moon, Jupiter and Ketus are Kartas. ii) In D-3 chart Jupiter, Venus and Mars are Kartas iii) In D/9 chart Ketu and Saturn are Kartas Kevala : If the subhapatii (lord of the Moon sign) aspects/joins the janma lagna or the Hora or Ghatika Lagna, it is termed as Kevala. If the Kevala aspects both Janma lagna and Hora lagna or Janma lagna and Ghatika lagna, it is called KEVALA YOGADI. If the Kevala aspects all the three lagnas Janma, Hora and Ghatika lagnas, it is called KEVALA M MAHA YOGADI. In the example chart: i) Moon is in Leo and the subhapati, the Sun. is in the Janma lagna, conjoins Hora lagna in Leo and aspects Ghatika lagna in Libra. ii) Therefore, the Sun is Kevala Mahayogada the native is born with a silver spoon and has plenty of everything. iii) Six planets qualify as Kartas in rasi chart. Rahu qualifies in Navamsa while Saturn and mars qualify in Drekhanna. iv) All 8 planets, except Saturn, qualify as SWAKARTA aspecting/joining Janma lagnain rasi, navamsa and drekhanna. v) Planets aspecting/joining Hora lagna become DHANA KARTA (giving wealth) and planets aspecting Ghatika lagna become RAJKARTA (giving power an authority). vi) YOGADA : Yoga = union. A planet aspecting/conjoining the Janma and Hora lagna or the Janma and Ghatika lagna become Yogada capable of giving the native prosperity and power. vii) If the native is to enjoy wealth and position himself, then the planet must aspect/conjoin the natal ascendant. viii) If the yogada aspects/joins only with the Hora and Ghatika lagna, wealthe and power will be with somebody he associates with

In the example chart : There are 6 yogada planets in the rasi chart and they are natural benefics and luminaries. Natural malefic Saturn, Mars and Rahu have stayed out. Five out of six yogada planets aspect all the three lagnas, Janma, Hora and Ghatika. The native was from the family of the longest reigning PM and involved with the topmost level of decision making.

VARNADA LAGNA 1. If janma lagna is in an odd sign count from Aries (Mesha) in regular order to Janma Lagna 2. If janma lagna is in an even sign count from Pisces (Meena) backwards to Janma Lagna 3. Similarly, apply the above procedure to Hora lagna. 4. If both the lagnas (janma lagna & hora lagna) are odd, then add their numbers or longitudes 5. If both the lagnas (janma lagna & hora lagna) are even, then subtract their numbers or longitudes subtract the smaller from the larger. 6. a) If it is odd count from Mesha directly. b)If it is even, count from Meena in reverse. 4.1.26 (SR) Profession is seen from the sign occupied by the lord of the Varnada Lagna. Varnada Bhede refers to the Varnada Lagna as well as the caste system based on profession inherited by the son from the father in the feudalistic society. In todays world of diversification, the influence of other planets and signs besides the dispositor of the Lord of Varnada Lagna should be considered. There are two methods of calculating Varada Lagna. One is based on degrees and the other is based on signs. Both methods follow the same steps, but can reveal different results if the combined result of the Lagna and Hora Lagna exceeds 30 degrees.

CHARA DASHA A CASE STUDY IN JAIMINI ASTROLOGY WITH THE USE OF VARGAS
CHARA DASHA

In Jaimini System, dasha implies dasha of sign like Aries, Taurus, Gemini Pisces. Chara Dasha begins from sign rising in the Lagna. Suppose Aries sign is rising in the Lagna, first Mahadasha will be of Aries. Likewise, the sequence of Antara, Pratyantara etc will be in the same manner. In a particular sign dasha first antaradasha, pratyantardasha etc will of that particular sign.

DIRECTIONS OF CHARA DASH

Following this information we are now able to divide the zodiacal signs into the following four quadrants of Savya (forward) and Apasavya (backward) counting: 1) Savya forward counting: Aries, Taurus and Gemini 2) Apasavya backward counting: Cancer, Leo and Virgo 3) Savya forward counting: Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius 4) Apasavya backward counting: Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces Six signs adopt direct direction when these are in Lagna: Aries, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius and Pisces. Six signs adopt indirect direction when these are in Lagna: Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn. (Adh. 2, Pada 3, sutra 28:) Panchamepadakramatprakpratyaktvam. "If the 9th from Lagna happens to be incorporated in an odd sign take the Rasi Dasas in the regular order. If it happens to be incorporated in an even sign, take the Rasi Dasas in the reverse order or backwards. The commencement of the Dasa should be from the Lagna. Kethu in these cases is considered as a benefic". Here we learn that the forward and backward countings of the Rasi-Dasas (read CharaDasas) is decided from the sign in the 9th house, and not from the Ascendant. We are however informed that the commencement of the Dasas is from the Ascendant - meaning the first Dasa will always be that of the Ascendant. Please observe that the rule about the 9th house should ONLY be applied in order to decide about the forwards or backwards countings of the Dasa-periods themselves - it should NOT be applied to neither the sub-periods nor to the calculation of the years of each Dasa-period. Counting the number of years In sutra 28 of Adh. 1, Pada 1 we are told: "Many of the writers are of the opinion, that the Rasi Dasa extent over such number of years which are counted from the Rasi to the place where its lord is located". This means that the number of years of each sign are found by counting from the sign in question up to the place of its lord. If the lord of a given house is in that very house itself we have to give 12 years. In case of the other house positions it will be the number of the house minus one.

Sub periods of Chara dasha :Adh. 1, Pada 1, sutra 34: Yavadwivekamavrittirbhanam. "Divide the Rasi Dasas by 12 and distribute the same to the 12 Rasis in proportion to the Rasi Dasas to get sub-periods. The counting should be direct in case of odd signs and vice

Notes for students of Jyotisha Bharati, by Prof. Anthony Writer, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai, India

CHARA DASHA A CASE STUDY IN JAIMINI ASTROLOGY WITH THE USE OF VARGAS versa if even". Chara Dasa means changeable time-periods, this type of dasas was actually divided into sub-periods by Jaimini. From this present sutra we learn that each dasa-period in Chara Dasa should be divided into 12 equal parts. This makes the calculation very easy and simple, since the number of months of each sub-period in a dasa will always be equal to the number of years of that particular dasa. Following this principle a dasa-period of, say, 8 years will get sub-periods of 8 months and a dasa-period of 4 years will get sub-periods of 4 months each. No 9th-house-rule for sub-periods: ) a) If the dasa in question belongs to the savya (forward) group then the first sub-period will be the 2nd house from the running dasa and the counting is direct. b)If it belongs to the apasavya (backward) group then it starts from the 12th house and the counting is backwards. In both cases the sign of the dasa in question will become the last (12th) sub-period. c)The number of months of each sub-period in a dasa will always be equal to the number of years of that particular dasa. This way a dasa-period of, say, 8 years will get sub-periods of 8 months each, and a dasa-period of 4 years will get sub-periods of 4 months each.

CHARA DASHA A CASE STUDY IN JAIMINI ASTROLOGY WITH THE USE OF VARGAS

For determining the length of Mahadasha, there is concept of counting in forward and backward order for particular sign. Once we determine the starting Chara Dasha of a Rashi, the duration is that Rashi dasha is assessed by counting in forward or backward as follows: LAGNA DURATION OF DASHA Aries Count Forward to Mars' location, then subtract 1 Taurus Forward to Venus' location, then subtract 1 Gemini Count forward to Mercury's location, then subtract 1 Cancer Count backward to the Moon's location, then subtract 1 Leo Count backward to the Sun's location, then subtract 1 Virgo Count backward to Mercury's position, then subtract 1 Libra Count forward to Venus' location, then subtract 1 Count forward to Mars' (or Ketu's) position, then subtract 1 Scorpio Sagittarius Count forward to Jupiter's position, then subtract 1 Capricorn Count backward to Saturn's position, then subtract 1 Aquarius Count backward to Saturn's (or Rahu's) position, then subtract 1* Pisces Count backward to Jupiter's position, then subtract 1

Counting the Dasha period: If a planet is in its own sign, it is assigned twelve years.
In Jaimini system Aquarius and Scorpio have two lords. - Aquarius: - Saturn and Rahu - Scorpio : - Mars and Ketu To solve this issue - whether to take Saturn or Rahu for lordship of Aquarius. Sage Jaimini discuss all the possible answer to find the actual lord. Different possibilities are: a) When both conjunct in the same sign. Subtract 1 from the distance; it will give you the period of that particular sign. b) If one placed in own sign and other in different then opt the second option. (If Mars is in

Scorpio, and Ketu is not, then, Ketu is selected. If Ketu is in Scorpio and Mars is not, then Mars is picked)- Dasha period is dependent on position of lord from its sign. Now if the sign is
savya then count the distance between the sign and its lord, in case of upsavya rashi count the distance but in reverse direction. c) If both are in different sign then choose the lord having more companion. d) If both are having same numbers of planets with themselves then choose the lord placed in dual sign. (Dual Sign - Fixed Sign - Movable Sign) e)Despite this, if still there is a problem of selecting among them, the planet at higher degree is the winner.

e) A similar method is to be used for Saturn and Rahu in the case of Aquarius.

Chara Dasha calculation for the above horoscope:

1. As the 9th house from Leo is Aries, it is a Savya rasi, hence counting is direct- in the clockwise direction from Leo:
Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer.

2. As the dasha is of Savya rashi, the sub period will be the second house from Leo, i.e., Virgo with the last sub period ending up with the Ascendant, i.e. Leo. 3. Rashi Dashas: Rasi from Asc. Leo Virgo Libra Scorpio Sagittarius Capricorn Aquarius Rasi lord placed in Sun in ascendant (own sign) count backward from virgo to Mercury Count forward to Venus Count forward to Ketu Count forward to Jupiter Count backwards to Saturn Count back to Saturn Dasha in years 12
