Before using the Printer, please read this manual carefully and operate it correctly.

SELF-IMPOSED CONTROL ON ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE CAUTION

The Printer is designated as Class A information technology equipment. If the Printer is operated in a home environment, it might cause electromagnetic interference. Therefore, the user might be requested to take necessary preventive action.

In this chapter, features, configuration, etc. of the Printer are described.

Features of the Printer

The Printer is a print system consisting of a basic model and optional devices such as MS, scanner and interface board. Major features include:

Installation CAUTION
For installation work of the Printer, be sure to employ the maintenance personnel trained by Shinko.

The Printer is installed normally by maintenance personnel, generally according to the following procedure. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) Unpack and take out the Printer. Remove transportation clamps. Attach the document guide. Connect the interface cable. Turn ON the power switch. Mount the ribbon cassette.

Carrying the Printer

When carrying the Printer, be sure to grasp grippers at both sides of the unit.

[Document guide is installed] When carrying the Printer, be careful not to drop it. During installation work, carefully follow the contents of this chapter. Once a problem occurs, refer to Help on Page 27.

CAUTION When carrying the Printer, do not grip any parts other than grippers. Otherwise, the Printer might fall or fail.

Installation conditions
Install the Printer at a site satisfying the following conditions, so as to operate the Printer in the optimum circumstances. AC power supply Use an AC power supply that satisfies the following conditions. Voltage: AC 85 V ~ 132 V or AC 170 V ~ 265 V Frequency: 49 Hz ~ 51 Hz or 59 Hz ~ 61 Hz Connect the power cable to an AC power receptacle regularly earthed. WARNING Be sure to use a single receptacle of the specified rating, and never use a common socket with any other device. If a branch receptacle is used jointly with another device, the receptacle might overheat or catch fire, or you might receive an electric shock.

PROHIBITION

Environmental conditions for installation Install the Printer at a site that satisfies the following conditions. Ambient temperature: 5C ~ 40C Ambient humidity: 20%~80% (No condensation) Well-ventilated site without heat build-up Installation site Install the Printer at a site that satisfies the following conditions. Mass of the Printer (approx. 14 kg) can be supported sufficiently, and installation area is larger than the bottom of the Printer. Flat, horizontal stable location Not subject to direct sunlight Away from heat dissipating equipment or heat source, such as a heater Where there are no rapid temperature variations Low humidity environment Not subject to water splashes Dust-free environment Where it will not receive impact or vibration CAUTION Do not place the Printer on a base that is either unstable, inclined, or subject to severe vibration or shocks. Otherwise, the equipment might fall over, and it might fail or you might be injured. Do not place the Printer under direct sunlight or near a heat source such as a heater. Otherwise, the internal temperature might rise, steam might condense, the cover might be deformed, or the sheath of the AC power cable might melt, causing the equipment to catch fire or fail. Do not place the Printer at a damp location, or where it would be exposed to steam or dust. Otherwise, the equipment might catch fire or fail, or you might receive an electric shock.

PROHIBITION

[Important information] Do not place the Printer at a location that is subject to severe vibration. Otherwise, an operation error might result.

Distance from rear surface of main unit to wall surface The Printer incorporates internal processing function(*2). Using this function, the distance from rear of the equipment to wall surface can be reduced. Recommended distance from the rear of the main unit to the wall surface is shown below.

Removing transportation clamps

Before connecting AC power cable, remove transportation clamps. Store removed clamps for any future transportation of the equipment. CAUTION When operating the top cover, opening or closing printing unit or operating internal parts of the equipment, be careful not to catch your fingers or strike anything.

1) Grasp the top cover with hands holding left and right sides, and fully open it. To close the cover, slowly push the cover down with both hands until it clicks.

2) Grasp the handle of the printing unit, and lift the unit until it clicks. To return the unit to its original state, lift the unit once to unlock it, and slowly push it down until it clicks.

3) Remove transport clamps (belt clamp, carriage clamp).

Installation of document guide

The Printer can be operated more efficiently with the document guide installed to the Printer. To install the guide, engage the two lugs of the guide with the two holes at bottom of the medium insertion slot of the main unit, and push the guide in until it clicks.

Turning ON power switch

WARNING Do not use a damaged, flawed, or cut power cable. If the cable is bent, pulled, or twisted, or if something heavy is placed on the cable, or if the cable is pushed into a narrow space with force, the cable might be damaged, catch fire, or give an electric shock.
PROHIBITION

Do not remove or insert the power plug with wet hands. Otherwise, you might receive an electric shock.

WARNING Do not use a damaged AC power cable or power plug (such as exposed conductor or open circuit.). If used in a state of disrepair, it might catch fire or you might receive an electric shock. Request your distributor to replace the cable with a new cable.

Confirm that the top cover is closed completely. Connect interface cable to interface connector at the rear. Connect AC power cable to AC power connector at the rear.

4) Securely insert the plug of the AC power cable into the AC receptacle that satisfies the installation conditions on Page 3. 5) Press power switch. (Repressing the switch turns it OFF.)

Mounting ribbon cassette

CAUTION When operating inner parts of equipment, be careful not to catch your fingers or strike anything.

DO NOT CATCH HAND

The ribbon cassette of the Printer is a dedicated material. Be sure to use the specified ribbon. Otherwise, the Printer might not normally perform, or in the extreme, the equipment might fail or malfunction. If a failure or fault occurs because unspecified ribbon cassette was used, SHINKO shall not be liable for responsibility or warrant the equipment. At this time, the equipment might be repaired on a chargeable basis. Install a ribbon cassette according to the following procedure. 1) If top cover is open, close the cover. 2) When power switch is OFF, turn it ON. 3) Continuously press STOP button at the control unit until the display shows RIBBON CHANGE (about 1.5 seconds).

4) Grip left and right sides of the top cover with both hands, and fully open t he cover.

5) Grasp the handle of printing unit, and lift the unit until it clicks.

6) Take ribbon cassette out of the box, and set it onto the main unit. [Important information] Do not remove the ribbon guide from the ribbon cassette.

7) Pull the ribbon guide toward you, and remove the guide from the cassette. [Important information] Be careful not to twist the ribbon.

8) Set the ribbon guide onto carriage. [Important information] If the ribbon is twisted, untwist it and set the ribbon onto the carriage.

9) Rotate knob in the direction of arrow mark and tighten the ribbon.

10) To return the printing unit back in place, lift up once and unlock it, slowly lower the unit until it clicks.

4.

Operating methods
This Chapter describes the methods of operating the Printer.

Medium inserting methods

The Printer is provided with an AIF (Auto Insertion Facility) function whereby a skewed medium can be corrected automatically when it is inserted; maximum correctable angle of a medium by the AIF function is 15, however, depending on size, thickness, and weight of the medium, the correctable angle may be less than 15. If a skewed medium cannot be corrected or the medium cannot be transported normally, it is automatically discharged. Therefore, manually correct skewing, or deform of the medium (if any) and insert it again. Insert a medium as follows. Thin medium such as single slip or copier paper 1) Place a normal medium (see Medium on Page 12) with the printing surface up on the document guide, put a hand on it as shown below, and insert the medium as slowly and gently as possible.

2) As soon as the medium begins to be pulled in, release it. Passbook 1) With a new passbook, open it once at its center page and flatten the opened medium.

2) Turn over pages of a normal passbook (see Media on Page 12) to the page to be entered, and flatten the opened medium. Front cover

Shows the error status when there is an error in the communication system linking Printer and host. Shows the error status when the error is physical (jam etc.). Shows the error status when a mechanical failure occurs. Shows the error status when the error is in the Printers firmware. Shows the error status when an unspecified medium is inserted into Printer. Shows the error status when the error is in the CPU or the flash memory of the Printer.

Abnormality display (Optional mechanism) ~ If any of the following messages appear, see Troubleshooting on Page 29.
MS R/W ERROR MS VIRGIN STRIPE SCAN OVER

Shows the error status, if any, in MS control mode. Shows the error status if no data have been detected in the magnetic stripe in MS reading control mode. Shows scanned medium that is over-sized or not left-justified.

Opening and closing top cover

Open top cover to change ribbon cassette or to remove a jam. CAUTION When opening or closing the top cover, be careful not to catch your fingers or strike anything.

DO NOT CATCH HAND

Open the top cover by grasping the protrusions on its side surfaces. The open angle of the top cover is about 100. It cannot be locked intermediately, so be sure to fully open, and after confirming it can stand open it, release the cover. When the top cover is open, the control unit displays COVER OPEN, and you cannot operate the Printer. With the top cover closed, the control unit displays READY and the Printer is ready to operate. If the control unit displays COVER OPEN although the top cover is securely closed and locked, the Printer might be in the state of failure. So see Troubleshooting on Page 29.

Opening and closing printing unit

To change ribbon cassette or eliminate jam, open the printing unit. CAUTION When opening or closing the printing unit, be careful not to catch fingers or strike anything.

CAUTION Do not touch print head. Otherwise you might be burned because the print head is hot immediately after printing.

CAUTION HIGH TEMPERATURE

Open the printing unit by gripping the green portion of shaft. The printing unit is not locked halfway, so be sure to fully open the unit until it clicks. After confirming the unit is not falling down, release its shaft. To close the unit, lift it once to unlock, slowly lower until you hear a click.

Removing document guide

Preferably install document guide during normal operation. To remove the guide because the Printer is to be moved or installation space is narrow, follow the procedure below. Remove document guide. Put fingertips into recesses on both sides of the document guide, and pull the guide toward you.

Install the document guide. Put two protrusions of the guide into two holes under the insertion slot of the Printer, and push in the guide until it clicks.

[Important information] Install the Printer and the document guide on the same plane.

Internal processing function

The internal processing function is a function by which the leading edge of a medium is conveyed inside the equipment (the cover), and with this function, the medium can be transferred without the tip of the medium protruding from rear of the equipment. Therefore, the Printer can be installed with a space of about 100 mm left between back of the equipment and the wall surface. To actuate the function, adjust the flap at the rear of the equipment. To turn ON the internal processing function

To turn OFF the internal processing function Pull the flap toward you by holding the top of the flap with your fingers. Note, however, that the rear side of the equipment must be 250 mm or more away from the wall surface at this time. Maintenance of Printer
Normal maintenance of the Printer is described below. Normally, cover and ribbon cassette must be maintained as follows. Clean the cover. Change the ribbon cassette. To remove the ribbon cassette, see Removing ribbon cassette on Page 24. To install ribbon cassette, see Mounting ribbon cassette on Page 9. To clean the interior of equipment, consult your distributor. Cover cleaning methods CAUTION Before beginning work, turn OFF power switch of the Printer, and disconnect plug from AC receptacle. REMOVE PLUG

CAUTION When removing AC power plug from receptacle, grip and pull the plug. If the cable is pulled, it might be damaged, catch fire or give an electric shock.

WARNING Do not remove or insert the plug with wet hands. Otherwise, you might receive an electric shock.
PROHIBITION

1) Turn OFF the power switch of the Printer, and remove the plug from AC receptacle. 2) If the plug is dusty, clean it with soft cloths or a brush.

CAUTION Wipe off dust from blades or the blade surface of the plug. Otherwise, micro-current might flow on the surface of plug when moistened, and overheating or fire might result.

3) Wipe the cover with dry cloths. If considerably soiled, use cloths wetted with water or a neutral cleanser, squeeze cloths tightly, and wipe the cover.

Important information Do not splash water or neutral cleanser directly on the main unit. Otherwise, the Printer might fail. Do not use a volatile organic solvent such as thinner or benzine, or chemical rags. Otherwise, the exterior of main unit might deteriorate, or the Printer might fail.

Changing ribbon cassette

Here, methods for changing ribbon cassette are described.

CAUTION Do not touch print head. Otherwise, you might be burned because the head is hot immediately after printing.

CAUTION HIGH TEMPERATURE

The ribbon cassette of the Printer is a dedicated material. Be sure to use the specified ribbon. Otherwise, the Printer might not normally perform, or in the extreme, the equipment might fail or malfunction. If a failure or fault occurs because unspecified ribbon cassette was used, SHINKO will not take any responsibility or warrant the equipment. At this time, the equipment might be repaired on an onerous basis. To buy a ribbon cassette, consult the distributor of the Printer.

Help
In this chapter, troubleshooting methods for a jam or fault are described. If a jam or a fault occurs, the related error message is shown on the display. Press START2 button in this state for at least two seconds, and the display will change to show the error code. The error code is an important hint for repairs, so be sure to make a note of it. The following troubleshooting description assumes the user is not a maintenance person. However, faults that are not described must be repaired by maintenance personnel, therefore, inform your distributor of the error code and details of the fault.

When Printer jams

1) Grip left and right sides of top cover with both hands, and fully open the cover.

2) Grasp the handle of printing unit, and lift the unit until it clicks.

3) Remove a medium that has jammed in the conveying route. If the medium is damaged, a paper segment might remain, so look and confirm that none remains. If a piece of paper cannot be completely removed, do not use force, instead consult your distributor.

4) To return the printing unit back in place, lift up once and unlock it, slowly lower the unit until it clicks.

5) To shut top cover, slowly put it down until you hear a click. 6) Confirm that display shows READY.

READY

If the equipment cannot be recovered from a jam, or jams occur frequently, consult your distributor.

Troubleshooting
If the Printer fails or malfunctions, follow the procedure below.

Emits smoke or offensive odor. So hot you cannot touch it. Abnormally noisy Visible fault on main unit, cable, etc.

Not operating normally

Read Symptoms of faults on Page 30, and identify the symptom of your machine. If you find a description of the symptom, follow the related procedure.

Immediately turn OFF the power switch, and remove the plug of the AC power cable from the AC receptacle.

If you cannot repair the equipment using the procedure or if you cannot find any description of the symptom, turn OFF the power switch, and remove the plug of the AC power cable from the AC receptacle.

Consult your distributor.

Symptoms of faults
If you find a symptom or likely fault when using the Printer, check the following issues. If the condition is not remedied, stop the Printer and consult your distributor.

1)

Power is not supplied (Power pilot lamp does not light, and no initial operation takes place)
AC power cable is not correctly connected. Correct connection. AC power cable forms open circuit. Consult the distributor. Not connected to specified AC power supply. Consult the distributor.

2)

Printer does not function (Power pilot lamp lights, but initial operation does not begin)
Top cover is open. Check that top cover is locked. (Incomplete locking --- Check for COVER OPEN)

3)

Printer does not work though data were transmitted

Top cover is open. Check that top cover is locked. (Incomplete locking --- Check for COVER OPEN) Interface cable is not normally connected. Correct connection. In self-test mode Turn OFF the power switch, and turn ON the switch again.

4)

Medium is not collected (discharged)

Medium is deformed. Medium is skewed when inserted. Correct it to use, or replace it with a new medium. (See Media on Page 12) Insert medium as straight as possible.

5)

Printing too light

Ribbon cassette or ribbon guide is not correctly mounted. It is time to change the ribbon cassette Correct mounting of ribbon cassette or ribbon guide. (See Mounting ribbon cassette on Page 9) Replace it with a new ribbon cassette. (See Replacing ribbon cassette on Page24)

Missing printed character or uneven density

Ribbon guide is not mounted. Ink ribbon is twisted. Rrohibited medium is used. Now time to change ribbon cassette Mount the ribbon guide correctly. (See Mounting ribbon cassette on Page 9) Remove ribbon guide, and untwist the ribbon. Use new medium instead of the current one. Replace it with new ribbon cassette. (See Replacing ribbon cassette on Page24)

The ribbon cassette of the Printer is a dedicated material. Be sure to use the specified ribbon. Otherwise, the Printer might not normally perform, or in the extreme, the equipment might fail or malfunction. If a failure or fault occurs because unspecified ribbon cassette was used, SHINKO will not take any responsibility or warrant the equipment. At this time, the equipment might be repaired on an onerous basis. To buy a ribbon cassette, consult the distributor of the Printer.

Functional parts for repair

The minimum storage period of functional repair parts of the Printer is five years after discontinuation of manufacture. Therefore, repair after this period might not be possible.

The following terms include those unique to the Printer with meanings slightly different from conventional meanings. ALPHABETIC order A AIF (Auto Insertion Facility) A function that a skew of a medium is automatically corrected and the medium is transferred, regardless of a position wherein the medium was inserted.

Basic weight

A unit representing the thickness of paper (gram/m2)

Basic model

A state without optional functions added. The basic model of the Printer is provided with RS232C interface (ch1) and without MS and scanner.

Bit

1 binary digit (0 or 1) Minimum numeric unit used in a printer or computer

BPI (Bits Per Inch)

A unit of recording density per 25.4 mm {1 inch} in MS (option)

BPS (Bits Per Second)

A unit of transmission rate of data per second

Carriage

A mounting base that moves backwards and forwards. For the Printer, it means a portion where the print head or MS head (option) is installed.

Center page

The center page of a medium

Condensation

A phenomenon that occurs, for example, when a cold glass is moved into a warm room or is suddenly warmed, and waterdrops form on the surface of the glass. If the Printer is handled in such a way, a similar phenomenon also occurs, possibly resulting in a malfunction.

CPI (Characters Per Inch)

A unit showing a character pitch. It represents the number of characters printable in a width of 25.4 mm {1 inch}.

CPS (Characters Per Second)

A unit showing printing speed. It denotes the number of characters output per second. However, the speed does not include print head moving time other than line-feeding (LF) and printing times.

Draft

A mode in which print speed is given priority. Although print quality in this mode is inferior to that in LQ or NLQ mode, print speed is 4 times higher than in LQ mode.

Dual-way minimum-distance printing

A system to reduce printing time by analyzing a distance from current head-stopping position to next print beginning position and taking the minimum moving stroke for printing.

Emulation

Controlling the Printer by software of another-make-printer. The Printer optionally supports any of the following emulations. IBM4722 Olivetti PR2/PR40/PR50 BANQIT LB A number that shows error status on the display.

Error code

Firmware

A basic program for controlling an apparatus such as a printer.

Flap

A movable component such as a cover. In the Printer, a guide for switching the internal processing function is called a flap because it is movable.

Host computer

A central computer in a network system. In this manual, a computer connected to the Printer is called host.

HUB

A device used to branch a port and connect a number of USB devices.

Initial operation

Jam

A state in which a medium gets stuck in the equipment during conveyance, and can not be transferred.

LCD(Liquid crystal display)

A device using a liquid crystal panel. With the Printer, LCD is used in the display at the operation unit.

LED(Light Emitting Diode)

A light emitting diode.

LQ(Letter Quality)

A mode wherein print quality is given priority.

MS(Magnetic Stripe reader writer)

Magnetic stripe reader/writer mechanism. This mechanism can be selected as an option of the Printer.

NLQ(Near Letter Quality) Ribbon cassette

A mode of high-quality printing with a speed of twice that in LQ mode. A cartridge with an ink ribbon mounted.

RS232C

A standard serial interface that connects a host computer to a printer using a cable

Scanner

Material such as photo, document, or drawing is illuminated and scanned, and the intensity of reflected or transmitted light is detected by a photo-detecting element such as a Charge Coupled Device(CCD). The contrast of the colors is converted according to the intensity of the light, AD (analogdigital) converted into digital signals and captured by the computer. With the Printer, there are options of either single- (top surface or bottom surface) or dual-surface scanner. An interface that transmits data bit by bit.

Serial interface

Start-stop synchronization

A serial transfer system in which start bit and stop bit are added to data An interface specified instead of conventional serial interface. It enables to connect devices in a tree-like manner using a branch hub; for the Printer, either USB or USB-HUB can be selected as an option.
