JUNE 2011
Consumer Electronics (CE) Samsung Management Corruption has spread throughout South Korea's largest business group Samsung, the head of its flagship firm said Thursday, vowing to lead a managerial house-cleaning. The warning from Lee Kun-Hee, chairman of Samsung Electronics, came a day after an inspection into a group subsidiary found unspecified irregularities which led to the resignation of its CEO. Oh Chang-Suk stepped down Wednesday as CEO of Samsung Techwin, a defence and precision machinery unit, after Lee chided group subsidiaries for a lack of oversight against corruption. He was replaced by Samsung Electronics executive vice president Kim Cheol-Kyo.

Credit Notes Fitch Ratings has affirmed Samsung Electronics's (SEC) Long-Term Foreign and Local-Currency Issuer Default Ratings (IDRs) at 'A+' with a Stable Outlook. The agency has also affirmed SEC's senior unsecured rating at 'A+'. " The affirmation reflects SEC's solid operating results and financial profile during the financial year ended December 2010 as well as Fitch's expectation that the company's credit profile will remain stable over the next 12-18 months, backed by its market leading positions and strong cash generation," said Alvin Lim, Associate Director in Fitch's Asia Pacific Telecom, Media and Technology team.

Patent-infringement in LED Siemens AG (SIE)s Osram unit said it filed patent-infringement complaints against Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. (066570) in the U.S. and Germany over light- emitting diode technology in televisions and lighting products. Complaints filed with the International Trade Commission in Washington seek to block U.S. imports of LG and Samsung products that use LEDs. Civil suits were filed in federal courts in Wilmington, Delaware, and Germany, Osram said today. LG also was sued in Japan, and Osram said it may file a complaint against LG in China as well. Analysts said the patent claims could be motivated in part by Siemenss desire to increase Osrams value before the initial public offering, which is tentatively set for September. Analysts estimate the business to be worth 5 billion to 6 billion euros, or $7.3 billion to $8.7 billion.

Sharp Business Japan's Sharp Corp forecast a 23 percent jump in annual operating profit on Friday as growing demand for smartphones and tablets bolsters sales, confounding analysts' estimates for a dip in income. For the year ending next March 31, Sharp expects an operating profit of 97 billion yen ($1.2 billion) compared with a consensus of 56.8 billion yen, based on the average of 30 forecasts by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. As part of a strategy aimed at tapping the burgeoning tablet market, Sharp said on Thursday it will switch most production at its Kameyama LCD plant in western Japan to smaller panels used in the popular devices. Once a mainstay of the company's LCD TV business, the plant was being increasingly seen as redundant in the face of competition from manufacturers in South Korea, Taiwan and elsewhere. Analysts expect global tablet sales to soar to more than 50 million in 2011. The new market remains dominated by Apple Inc, which sold nearly 15 million of its iPads in nine months of 2010, but is attracting a stream of new entrants. Jointly Procure Parts with Foxconn The Nikkei business daily reported that Sharp is in talks with Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision to jointly procure parts used for LCD production. The company was forced to suspend production at two TV panel plants, including its state-of-theart 10th generation factory at Sakai in April, after the March 11 earthquake triggered a plunge in demand and shortages of a gas used in panel production.

Licence agreement with Hitachi Hitachi Ltd. will allow foreign companies to use its patented TV technology in an effort to offset losses from declining TV sales, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned. The plan is the first step in the electrical appliance giant's shift in its TV business model as the company moves from expanding the sale of Hitachi brands to earning from royalties paid by emerging manufacturers using Hitachi's cuttingedge technology, according to sources. Hitachi has concluded it is difficult to profit by expanding the production of Hitachi-brand TVs, they said. Hitachi's decision to profit from their intellectual property may influence other electrical appliance makers, which have been suffering from lower prices on flatscreen TVs - their bread-and-butter product. According to the sources, Hitachi plans to share its energy-saving technology, which minutely changes the brightness of the light-emitting diodes on TV displays. This technology has succeeded in cutting power consumption by about 30 percent compared with the company's old models. The first company to use Hitachi's technology will be Vestel Group, a Turkish electrical appliance maker. The company, which makes TVs under their own name and for other brands, is the third-largest consignment manufacturer in the world. Vestel will pay royalties to Hitachi for the right to use the technology. Hitachi and Vestel are currently negotiating whether royalties will be fixed, or paid according to the amount of TVs manufactured or sold. Vestel will sell some the TVs under its own name. Hitachi plans to

license its technologies to other emerging manufacturers in China and other countries. Hitachi expects to earn several billion yen from licensing their technology in the second half of fiscal 2011, the sources said. CE Market TV shipments According to the latest findings from DisplaySearch's "Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report," total TV shipments during the first quarter this year registered a sharper-thantypical seasonal decline with only 55.244 million units, dropping by 29 percent from the last quarter of 2010. The previous year posted a 15 percent year-on-year growth rate as sales were lower than shipment volumes, leading to an inventory carry-over in many regions. Among the five TV technologies surveyed by DisplaySearch, LCD TVs accounted for more than 80 percent of total shipments with 44.253 million units, followed by CRT TVs with 7.295 million units or 13.2 percent of total, PDP TVs with 3.651 million or 6.6 percent, rearprojection TVs (RPTVs) with 45,000 units or 0.1 percent and organic LED TVs with only 200 units. Demand for LCD TV continues to dwindle. From the latest statistics, the six largest TV brands in China showed a total of 19% on-month decrease in shipments in May. The global LCD TV market is likely to reach only 215 million units in 2011, down from the previous estimation of 225 million units. The annual growth will only reach 11%. Industry sources indicated the bleak market condition is a result of low demand in Japan in the wake of the earthquake, weak recovery of the global economy, lack of confidence amid rising prices of oil and raw materials, and a shift of focus to tablet PCs from conventional products. According to industry observers, the

estimated 2011 total shipments of the six largest TV brands in China should be around 38 million units. TVs that are larger than 32-inch continue to dominate the shipments. Chimei Innolux (CMI) continues to dominate the LCD panel market in China with 29.3% of market share. LG Display ranks second with 27% of market share. Samsung and LG Display supply 61% of the LED TV panels for the six largest TV brands in China. South Korea firms also dominate in the supply of panels for 3D TVs. Connected TV U.S. market researchers forecast dynamic growth in the area of internet compatible TV: in 2014, it is expected that Internet-compatible televisions will command a global market share of 43%, which corresponds to 122 million televisions.

The total size of B2B solutions for integrated display market is around Rs 2,500 crore which is growing at 2025% annually. Soon Kwon, managing director, LG Electronics India, said, We expect the B2B business to have a higher growth potential as compared to B2C and are expecting 30-35% growth rate as compared to 25 % of consumer electronics items. Digital terrestrial set top box unit shipments across the globe will approach 45 million units by 2015, according to a research report.Research firm In-Stat also said the trend is fueled primarily by the analog-to-digital transition as well as upgrades of older boxes to newer HDTV versions, replacement of older boxes with HD and PVR versions, and STBs with PVR capability and a broadband connection. In-Stat said the year 2010 was a challenging year for the worldwide digital set top box market as total unit shipments decreased by 7%. It is likely that 2011 will also be a challenging year, but there is better news on the horizon. Digital set top boxes continue to be key pieces of equipment for pay-TV service providers. For many service providers, the digital set top box functions as their gateway into the home, said Mike Paxton,In-Stat research director. In addition to their important position in the digital TV/payTV ecosystem, digital set top boxes continue to offer an attractive market opportunity for set top box manufacturers and semiconductor suppliers, alike. In 2010, digital set top box revenues were greater than the combined revenues of video game consoles and Blu-ray players. New research by In-Stat also revealed that Europe is expected to account for over 50% of worldwide unit shipments of DTT STBs through 2011. There are some 30 DTT STB manufacturers with significant market shares. In 2010, revenue from semiconductor components inside digital set top boxes was $4.8 billion.

comes after rival company Flextronics International hinted recently that it will probably withdraw from the ODM/OEM notebook market due to low margins, may signal that Foxconn will also revamp its strategy for the OEM notebook business, the sources indicated. After entering the ODM notebook segment for two years, Foxconn may still incur losses in the notebook assembly business although the company actually still gains profits through the supply of parts and components, including PCBs, network modules, chassis, connectors, and thermal modules, indicated industry sources. Flextronics Notebook Design- R&D Team With Electronics manufacturing service (EMS) provider Flextronics recently exiting the notebook manufacturing industry, the company's notebook R&D team was soon being recruited by Taiwan-based notebook maker Compal Electronics and Wistron, according to sources from notebook players. The sources pointed out that with ARMbased processor makers such as Texas Instrument (TI), Nvidia and Qualcomm all enter the PC processor industry, PC players are now paying more attention to their R&D team and are becoming aggressive in headhunting talents from competitors to strengthen their technology base. The sources noted that the IT market will become even more complicated and PC makers will need to be more flexible as their clients will demand their products feature different combinations of platform and if a PC maker cannot catch up with clients, the maker is likely to have difficulty surviving in the notebook manufacturing market. In 2010, EMS providers aggressively sought out talent from notebook makers, offering high salaries and causing notebook makers to try to follow suit, but now it

Foxconn, one of the world's largest electronics manufacturers, plans to increase its investment in central China's Henan Province after moving factories to Henan and southwest China's Sichuan Province last year. Foxconn plans to invest in 19 new projects in Henan, including factories that will produce camera lenses and LED lighting rigs, as well as more branches of Foxconn's retail chain Cybermart, Terry Guo, chairman of the Foxconn Technology Group, said during an economic forum held in Taipei on Friday.

Restructuring Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) is reportedly restructuring its CMMSG (computer module move and service group) and may relocate up to 20-30% of the group's workforce to other departments, according to industry sources. The restructuring will begin with the CMMSG unit in Shanghai as Foxconn is expanding the capacity of its production base in Chongqing, western China and will relocate all of its facilities for the production of notebooks for Hewlett-Packard (HP) to Chongqing in July, revealed the sources. The restructuring, which

is the notebook makers that are recruiting. Flextronics originally had a notebook R&D center in Taiwan, and an R&D team in China, but since its notebook manufacturing business did not have a profitable strategy, the company is consolidating its resources to smart mobile devices such as tablet PCs and smartphone, and is only leaving about 20% of its original personnel from the notebook business to handle the remaining orders. Flextronics' R&D team originally came from Taiwan-based Arima Computer and the team has long years of experience. Some of the team members were recruited by Wistron to handle orders from Hewlett-Packard (HP), while some members were recruited by Compal to handle Lenovo's orders.

Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer, Asustek Computer, Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), Inventec, Quanta Computer, Pegatron Technology, Wistron and Compal have all gathered in the city for their new production bases, and with the addition of close to 250 component makers, the mayor of Chongqing expects the city will be able to have a total production capacity of 100 million notebooks and end devices by 2015, the paper added.

Since Flextronics has already phased out of the notebook manufacturing business, the short-term orders are expected to boost Wistron's notebook shipments to HP in 2011 from only one million units to 2-3 million units with the company's overall notebook shipments in the second half to grow 21% compared to the first, noted the paper. In 2012, Wistron's orders from HP are expected to increase to 9-10 million units with

Tablet PC Branded handset vendors as well as ODM/OEM handset makers, who have ventured into the tablet PC segment, have recently switched their focus back to the development of 4- to 5-inch high-end smartphones in the wake of recent lackluster sales of Android-based tablets, according to industry sources. With the exception of Samsung Electronics, which has managed to grab a 10% share of the global tablet PC segment, sales of tablet PCs from other vendors including Motorola Mobility, Research in Motion (RIM), LG Electronics (LGE) and HTC have been flat so far, the sources indicated. While reducing their investments in the development of 7- to 10-inch tablets, handset vendors and ODMs have instead strengthened their R&D for high-end Android smartphones regarding that the current market share of Android-based smartphones is still higher than that of iPhone, said the sources.Taiwan-based handset ODMs are also reluctant to commit large capital on tablet PCs given that only notebook ODMs and EMS firms including Foxconn Electronics, Quanta Computer, Compal Electronics and Inventec are now able to win more ODM tablet PC orders, the sources commented

Flat Panel Industry Samsung Investment in China Samsung Electronics, the worlds No 1 television maker, held a groundbreaking ceremony for a nextgeneration liquid crystal display plant in China in a drive to target the fastgrowing Chinese market. The company said it plans to invest US$3 billion to construct a 7.5-generation liquid crystal display plant in Suzhou, Jiang Province, and make it ready for mass production by 2013. The plant, dubbed Samsung Suzhou LCD, SSL, will be built on 571,900 square metres of land and is expected to produce up to 100,000 panels per month beginning in 2013, according to company officials. The 7.5-generation display panels upgrade business productivity for firms buying the product compared to the previous generation panels because they enable greater panel production, they said.

Price Fixing Samsung is accused of being involved in a price fixing cartel by BrandsMart USA. The electronics retailer has pointed the finger at the company, claiming that it, alongside LG, AU Optronics, Chi Mei Optoelectronics and Toshiba, allegedly fixed prices of liquid crystal displays to drive up prices for retailers from 1996 to 2006. According to the complaint filed by Interbond Corporation of America - the name BrandsMart sits behind - the accused allegedly also used the gang to restrict production of the LCD panels, used in mobile phones and computer monitors. The company claims that the group held monthly and quarterly meetings between the alleged dates where they would whisper about how to keep price and supplies low.

LCD versus OLED Apple is likely to stick with LCDs from LG Display for the iPad 3, in spite of pressure from Samsung, a Korean report claims. LG is said to be planning a new production line for low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) LCDs at its Paju plant; the line should kick into action by 2013, with the aim of improving screen resolutions. While LTPS LCDs can't match the resolution of OLEDs, they are about half the cost, notes the Korea Times. Samsung is rumored to be pushing for OLED nevertheless, but an industry source suggests it will lose the battle. "It is unlikely that Apple will change its convention of using the same parts for product sequels. LG's construction plan would mean that Apple will stick to the LCD for the iPad 3 and the muchtouted gadgets will come to town in 2013," the person says. The iPad 3 is unlikely to be delayed that long, however, as Apple always refreshes flagship products on at least an annual basis. A more probable ship date in March or April 2012, in keeping with the iPad 1 and 2. Another Times source claims that Apple has asked both LG and Samsung to provide LCDs with better PPI (pixel-per-inch) performance. The allegation is consistent with reports that the iPad 3 will have a higher-resolution display, closer in sharpness to the iPhone 4. Hopes had been that the iPad 2 might make the jump, but issues like costs and technical limitations are thought to have interfered.

The average size of LCD panels purchased by China TV vendors will reach 39.5inch in 2011, up from 33.6-inch in 2010, said Bai, head of a delegation representing China's brand TV vendors visiting Taiwan currently. In addition to visiting AU Optronics (AUO) and Chimei Innolux (CMI), the delegation will also visit some component suppliers including Wistron, Silicon Precision Industries (SPIL), MediaTek, Wintek and Unity Opto Technology. China's production of LCD TVs is expected to top 150 million units in 2014, with the self-reliance ratio of flat panels to reach only 50%, Bai estimated, indicating that there is room for further cooperation between companies in Taiwan and China According to the Taipei Times, PC panel prices rebounded 3.7 percent to $55 per unit from last quarter compared to the $53 in the previous quarter. However, touch panels, commonly used in tablets are continuing to rise, with AUO claiming about 10 percent to 15 percent of its notebook panels are equipped with touch sensors. Panel Production in China The LCD panel industry in China has been expanding rapidly. Many firms have been trying to enter the panel industry in China. However, due to oversupply concerns, the point of time for the next issuance of licenses for panel facilities in China might be delayed to 2012-2013. China has been developing the large-size panel industry and recently became the third largest panel producing country. China's government has been controlling the licenses for firms from Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea to set up panel production facilities in China, which allows China-based firms to begin production of 8.5G lines ahead of other countries. Samsung has broken ground of the 7.5G production facility in Suzhou in May 2011, and production should begin in the second half of 2012. AU Optronics' (AUO) jointventure 8.5G facility plans to begin production in fourth-quarter 2012. The 8.5G production facility of LG Display has obtained a license, but does not have a set schedule for construction yet. Chimei Innolux (CMI) has confirmed plans to set up a 8.5G panel production line in China but has yet to receive approval. In fact, the global panel industry has been facing oversupply problems. Panel makers such as AUO and LG Display both hold conservative attitudes toward the market and do not have aggressive capacity expansion plans. According to industry sources, it takes time for the next generation panel firms to operate and China-based panel makers might have a learning curve of 2-3 years at least. The period of high growth for LCD TV market in China has passed but the market size in 2011 will still be around 42 million units.

Intel Financial Report Intel on Friday raised its financial outlook for the third quarter, citing better-than-expected PC chip sales. The chipmaker said it would turn in revenue of between $7.3 billion and $7.8 billion for the quarter, above its previous expectation of $6.9 billion to $7.5 billion. The update moves the midpoint of Intel's revenue guidance for the quarter, a figure analysts generally use as a de facto revenue estimate, from $7.2 billion to between $7.5 billion and $7.6 billion, an increase of $300 million to $400 million. The company said in a statement that its Intel Architecture business, which includes PC processors, chipsets and related components for building PCs, is trending toward higher sales worldwide. That line of business accounts for the majority of Intel's revenue. Meanwhile, the company said demand for its communications products, which include technology such as flash memory, remains soft. If Intel's third-quarter revenue comes in at $7.6 billion, the company will post a 14 percent year-over-year increase from its revenue of $6.5 billion in the third quarter of 2002 and an 11 percent increase from the second quarter's $6.8 billion.

Application Store for Tablet and Notebook Intel hopes to make it easier for developers to make money by pushing a subscription model to sell applications through its tablet and netbook application store, a company executive said this week. A subscription model would provide another revenue stream in addition to advertising and direct sales of applications hosted on Intel's AppUp store, said Peter Biddle, general manager of AppUp products and services at Intel. AppUp, designed similar to Apple's App Store, hosts applications for netbooks and tablets running on Intel or x86 processors. Under the current revenue model, developers get a 70 percent cut on applications sold, and Intel and partners get the remaining 30 percent.

AMD Bechmark Reports World's second largest chip maker AMD has declined to support the newlylaunched chip standard Sysmark 2012 and quit the benchmark body, BAPCo, saying it did not accurately reflect the performance of its chips. Sources said the move could lead to dip in prices of computers by as much as five per cent. The SySmark benchmark is used to measure performance by PC makers, hardware and software developers, IT departments, system integrators, publishers and testing labs. The Sysmark benchmark is used to produce chips with very high scores but many times may have unnecessary components, which increase the price of the chips, sources said. Now, AMD

Semiconductor Market Semiconductor As they have for several years, Intel, Samsung and Toshiba (in that order) remain the worlds top vendors of semiconductors, in a market which is expected to see about 4% growth during 2011. That growth, however, is softer than the robust growth seen in 2010 (though still better than 2009s dismal performance.) According to ABI Research semiconductor practice director Peter Cooney, In the first quarter of 2011 these three firms together controlled 31.6% of the global semiconductor market, a slight increase over their 2010 share. That difference was made up by Intel, which lifted its portion by 2%. In addition, the top levels of the market landscape are currently being reshaped by a wave of acquisitions. Intel acquired parts of Infineon; Qualcomm recently completed its acquisition of Atheros, and Texas Instruments is set to acquire National Semiconductor. These deals, says Cooney, will have an impact on quarterly results this year, on the companies future directions and product strategies, and probably on the division of market share. The strongest (generally) get stronger and competition increases, which forces the smaller suppliers to become more innovative in order to compete.

Ethernet Switch After a growth streak throughout 2010 that propelled the enterprise Ethernet switching market to record levels, worldwide revenue was down 12% sequentially to $4.2 billion in 1Q11, and 9% lower year-over-year (from 1Q10). Weakness in the public sector vertical due to sun-setting stimulus programs and pressure on government budgets contributed to the decline, and will be a drag on market growth for the rest of the year. Almost every vendor posted negative revenue results in 1Q11 compared with 4Q10, with #1 Cisco down 14%, #2 HP down 3%, and #3 Juniper down 23% Only 3 vendors -Avaya, Force10, and Adtran -- bucked the downward trend, each posting global Ethernet switch revenue gains ranging from 1.5% (Avaya) to 24% (Adtran)

Payment Market NFC Korean Alliance The new Grand NFC Korean Alliance, composed of both government bodies and technology companies, is looking to advance NFC tech in a number of ways--from building test-bed devices so third-party firms can build their own systems, to putting together a proper service infrastructure. That's why there are cellphone firms in the mix, along with LG, Samsung and a number of

other makers, credit card companies, and existing telecoms billing providers. Pretty much everyone who would need to be involved to make an NFC solution work, right down to the Korea Internet Companies association, is involved. The Alliance has its eye on first-mover advantage, aggressively pushing NFCenabled tech in Korea so the firms involved can build up expertise and thus offer their services on an international market with a degree of history that would be hard to rival. More merchants will get NFC-equipped card-processing terminals, and ticketing for transport and access will have an accelerated development to adopt NFC tickets. Tourist information will get an NFC boost, advertising will get custom NFC tags in a location-based-services experiment, and coupons and NFCbased smart wallet tech will be developed. If that sounds familiar, it's because some of it is reminiscent of what Google, Visa, and MasterCard have been proposing in a number of (slightly overlapping) schemes to get digital-payments tech and integrated smartphone apps using NFC in the U.S. The difference is that instead of competing against each other, the coalition in Korea is pulling in the same direction--and with huge manufacturers like LG and Samsung aboard, it can cover the hardware, software, and fiscal infrastructure needs all at once. The plan is to generate around $1 billion (equivalent) in production revenue, $320 million in "added values," and around 5,700 jobs over the next five years. Pretty serious plans, in other words.
