MACHINE TOOL TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT LABORATORY SAFETY

The main causes of accidents in the machine tool lab can be attributed to poor housekeeping, loose clothing and long hair, improper tool use, car set-ups, careless handling of sharp tools, flying chips and handling of metal chips. In all cases the instructor will have sole discretion as to suitab attire or behavior. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Safety glasses must be worn at all times while in the machine tool lab. Never wear loose clothing around machines. Remove loose sweatshirts, coats and ties. Appropriate footwear shall be worn in the lab. Do not wear rings, watches, necklaces, etc., which could be caught in a machine. Loose or long hair must be either tied back, tucked under a hat, or in a hair net. No machine or tool in the laboratory will be operated or utilized until the student has been fully briefed by the instructor in its proper use, and operating procedures. Never operate a machine if the safety guards are removed or not properly closed. Always stop the machine before measuring, cleaning, oiling, or making any adjustments. Do not attempt to stop a machine with your hands.

10. Do not use rags or wipers near moving parts or around running machines or equipment. 11. Never have more than one person operating a machine at one time. 12. Care must be exercised in the handling or working around drills, cutters, and cutting tools. be treated with respect. 13. All burrs, and sharp projections, should be removed immediately. 14. Be sure that all rotating items (chucks, faceplates, cutters) have been secured properly before turning on the machine. Check other peoples work when operating a machine. 15. Move the carriage to the farthest position of the cut and revolve the lathe spindle one complete turn by hand before starting the lathe. 16. Keep the floor around the machine free and clear of grease, oil and any objects 17. Chuck wrenches must never be left in a lathe chuck nor drill chucks. 18. Parts being drilled must never be held by hand, always use a vise or clamps. 19. Cutting tools must always be removed before the machine is cleaned. 20. Care must be taken when passing by, or between operators. Absolutely no horseplay will be allowed in the lab. 21. No work is to be performed in the lab without an instructor present. 22. Report all injuries, no matter how slight, to the instructor immediately. 23. All safety related issues including dress and behavior shall be at the sole discretion of the instructor. 24. Flagrant abuse of these safety rules may result in withdrawal from the course.
