General Information
Congratul ati ons on your ownershi p of an ADEMCO Securi ty System.
You've made a wi se deci si on i n choosi ng thi s system because i t
represents the l atest i n securi ty protecti on technol ogy avai l abl e today.
ADEMCO i s the worl d's l argest manufacturer of securi ty systems,
and mi l l i ons of premi ses are protected by ADEMCO.
The VI STA-15 offers you three forms of protecti on: burgl ary, fi re, and
emergency. Your system consi sts of at l east one keypad, whi ch
provi des control of system operati on. The system i ncl udes vari ous
sensors that provi de peri meter and i nteri or burgl ary protecti on, pl us
smoke or combusti on detectors desi gned to provi de earl y warni ng i n
case of fi re.
The VI STA-15 uses mi crocomputer technol ogy to moni tor al l
protecti on zones and system status, di spl ay appropri ate i nformati on
on the keypad(s) used wi th the system, and i ni ti ate appropri ate
al arms. Your system may al so have been programmed to
automati cal l y send al arm or status messages over the phone l i nes to a
central al arm moni tori ng stati on.
Zones
Your system's sensi ng devi ces have been assi gned to vari ous "zones."
For exampl e, the sensi ng devi ce on your entry/exi t door may have
been assi gned to zone 01, sensi ng devi ces on wi ndows i n the master
bedroom to zone 02, and so on. These numbers wi l l appear on the
di spl ay, al ong wi th a descri pti on for that zone (i f programmed), when
an al arm or troubl e condi ti on occurs.
Burglary Protection
Your VI STA-15 provi des fi ve modes of burgl ary protecti on: STAY,
NI GHT-STAY, AWAY, I NSTANT, and MAXI MUM, and al l ows you to
bypass sel ected zones whi l e l eavi ng the rest of the system armed. You
must turn on (arm) the burgl ary protecti on porti on of your system
before i t wi l l sense burgl ary al arms. The system al so provi des a
CHI ME mode, for al erti ng users to the openi ng of protected doors and
wi ndows whi l e the system i s di sarmed. Refer to the other secti ons of
thi s manual for procedures for usi ng these features.

Security Codes
At the ti me of i nstal l ati on, you were assi gned a personal four-di gi t
securi ty code, known onl y to you. You must enter the securi ty code
when armi ng and di sarmi ng the system, and when performi ng other
system functi ons. As an addi ti onal safety feature, other users who do
not need to know your code can be assi gned di fferent securi ty codes.
Refer to the Securi ty Codes secti on for procedures on addi ng securi ty
codes to the system.
Fire Protection
The fi re protecti on porti on of your securi ty system (i f used) i s al ways
acti ve and wi l l sound an al arm i f a fi re condi ti on i s detected. Refer to
the Fi re Al arm System secti on for i mportant i nformati on concerni ng
fi re protecti on, smoke detectors, and pl anni ng emergency exi t routes
from the premi ses.
Alarms
When an al arm occurs, both the keypad and external sounders wi l l
sound, and the keypad wi l l di spl ay the zone(s) causi ng the al arm. I f
your system i s connected to a central moni tori ng stati on, an al arm
message wi l l al so be sent. To stop the al arm soundi ng, si mpl y di sarm
the system.

Cross Zoning
Cross zoni ng i s used to prevent fal se al arms. Up to 10 zones can be l i nked
together i n your securi ty system (programmed by the i nstal l er). I f any of
the 10 l i nked zones faul ts i n the armed state, the system wi l l wai t to see
i f a second zone faul ts wi thi n a programmed peri od of ti me. When the
second zone faul ts, al arms wi l l be sent out for both zones (i f
programmed), the al arm bel l wi l l sound, and the two zones i n al arm wi l l
be di spl ayed on the keypad.
However, i f another faul t does NOT occur wi thi n the programmed peri od
of ti me, onl y a Troubl e report wi l l be sent to the moni tori ng stati on and
no message wi l l be di spl ayed on the keypad unti l the system i s di sarmed.
Memory of Alarm
When an al arm condi ti on occurs, the keypad di spl ays the number(s)
of the zone(s) that caused the probl em, and di spl ays the type of al arm
(e.g., FIRE, ALARM). I t remai ns di spl ayed unti l i t i s cl eared by
di sarmi ng the system (see the Di sarmi ng and Si l enci ng Al arms
secti on).
Phone Access & Voice Response Capability
Your system may i ncl ude a voi ce modul e that permi ts you to access
the system vi a a TouchTone phone, ei ther on-premi ses or by cal l -i n
when away. The phone access feature wi l l enabl e you to do the
fol l owi ng:
Recei ve synthesi zed voi ce messages over the tel ephone regardi ng
the status of the securi ty system.
Arm and di sarm the system and perform most functi on commands
vi a the tel ephone, wi th voi ce confi rmati on provi ded after each
command entry.
Paging Feature
I f the pagi ng feature has been programmed for your system, your
pager wi l l respond to certai n condi ti ons as they occur i n your system.
Your pager wi l l di spl ay code numbers i ndi cati ng the type of condi ti on
that has occurred. Refer to the Pagi ng Feature secti on for more
detai l ed i nformati on.

Entry/Exit delays
General Information
The VI STA-15 has preset ti me del ays, known as exi t del ay and entry
del ay. Whenever you arm your system, exi t del ay gi ves you ti me to
l eave through the desi gnated exi t door wi thout setti ng off an al arm.
Exi t del ay begi ns i mmedi atel y after enteri ng any armi ng command,
and appl i es to al l modes of armi ng protecti on. I f i t i s programmed, a
sl ow beepi ng wi l l sound throughout the exi t del ay peri od, wi th fast
beeps duri ng the l ast 10 seconds.
Entry Delay gi ves you ti me to di sarm the system when you re-enter
through the desi gnated entrance door. But you must di sarm the
system before the entry del ay peri od ends, or an al arm wi l l occur. The
keypad beeps duri ng the entry del ay peri od, remi ndi ng you to di sarm
the system. There are two entry del ays (i f programmed). The fi rst i s
for your pri mary entrance and the second can be used for a secondary
entrance, where a l onger del ay i s requi red to gi ve you enough ti me to
wal k to the keypad to di sarm the system.
You can al so arm the system wi th no entry del ay at al l by usi ng ei ther
the I NSTANT or MAXI MUM armi ng mode. These modes provi de
greater securi ty whi l e you are on the premi ses.

Exit Alarms
To minimize false alarms sent to the alarm monitoring company,
your system may have been programmed for this feature. Ask
your installer if Exit Alarm is active for your system.
Exit Alarm Active
Whenever you arm the system, the exi t del ay begi ns. I f an entry/exi t
door or i nteri or zone i s faul ted when the exi t del ay ends (e.g., exi t
door l eft open), the system sounds an al arm and starts the entry del ay
ti mer. I f you di sarm the system before the entry del ay ends, the al arm
sound stops and the message CANCELED ALARM or CA i s
di spl ayed on the keypad, al ong wi th a zone number i ndi cati ng the
faul ted zone. No message i s sent to the al arm moni tori ng company.
To cl ear the exi t al arm condi ti on, the open zone must be made i ntact.
To cl ear the di spl ay, enter your 4-di gi t securi ty code pl us OFF key.
I f you do not di sarm the system before the entry del ay ends, and an
entry/exi t door or i nteri or zone i s sti l l open, the al arm sound
conti nues and an exi t al arm message i s sent to the al arm moni tori ng
company. The message EXIT ALARM or EA i s di spl ayed on the
keypad, al ong wi th a zone number i ndi cati ng the faul ted zone. To stop
the al arm, the system must be di sarmed (by enteri ng your code pl us
OFF). To cl ear the di spl ay, enter your code pl us OFF a second ti me.
An exi t al arm al so resul ts i f an entry/exi t door or i nteri or zone i s
faul ted wi thi n 2 mi nutes after the end of the exi t del ay.

About the Keypads
IMPORTANT
If the keypad beeps rapidly when you enter the premises, it
means that an alarm has occurred during your absence and an
intruder may still be on the premises.
LEAVE IMMEDIATELY AND CONTACT THE POLICE from a
nearby safe location.
General Information
Your keypads al l ow you to control al l system functi ons. The keypads
feature a tel ephone-styl e (di gi tal ) keypad and a Li qui d Crystal
Di spl ay (LCD) that shows the nature and l ocati on of al l occurrences.
The keypads contai n a bui l t-i n l oudspeaker (sounder) that wi l l
annunci ate duri ng al arms and troubl es. The keypads al so beep duri ng
certai n system functi ons, such as duri ng entry/exi t del ay ti mes, i n
CHIME mode, and when you depress any of the keys (to acknowl edge
the key press).
There are two basi c types of keypads: the fixed-word keypad and the
alpha keypad (both descri bed bel ow).
Two-Line Alpha Keypad
Two-l i ne al pha keypads feature a 2-l i ne, 32-character al phanumeri c
LCD that di spl ay system messages i n Engl i sh. The typi cal al pha
keypad (6139) i s shown on page 12. These keypads can al so be
programmed wi th custom zone descri ptors. The screen displays
depicted in this manual are those that typically appear on a 2-
line alpha keypad.
Fixed-Word Keypad
Fi xed-word keypads are functi onal l y i denti cal to al pha keypads, but
the LCD di spl ay uses predesi gnated words to i denti fy the nature and
l ocati on of occurrences. The typi cal fi xed-word keypad (6128) i s shown
on the next page.

protecti on zones must be cl osed or bypassed (see Bypassi ng

Bypassing Protection Zones

BYPASS

zones i ntenti onal l y unprotected. Bypassed zones are unprotected and

All bypasses are removed when an OFF sequence (security

General Information
I f the Pagi ng feature has been programmed for your system, your
pager wi l l respond to certai n condi ti ons as they occur i n your system.
Thi s message appears i n a 7-di gi t format expl ai ned bel ow. You can
al so send up to 16 addi ti onal di gi ts that may consi st of PI N numbers,
messages, remi nders, etc. These 16 di gi ts are programmed by your
i nstal l er and wi l l appear before the standard 7-di gi t message.
The [D] button, when pressed (i f avai l abl e), sends a speci al message
to a pager and di spl ays Pager Msg sent on the keypad for 30 seconds
(on an al pha keypad). The message i t sends i s coded as 999-9999 and
si gni fi es ANY message the user and reci pi ent have deci ded i s
appropri ate.
Code Format
The 7-di gi t condi ti on code that fol l ows takes the fol l owi ng form: SSS-

SSS = 3-di gi t event code: 911 = Al arm
811 = Troubl e

reporti ng an open (101) by user 11 (0011). Opening and closing
codes are al ways fol l owed by the code number of the person who

Security Codes
General Information
As an addi ti onal safety feature, other users who do not need to know
your code can be assi gned di fferent securi ty codes. These secondary
users are i denti fi ed by "user numbers," whi ch you sel ect when you
assi gn a user's securi ty code. You can assi gn up to 14 addi ti onal user
codes (user numbers 03-16), i ncl udi ng the Temporary and Duress
codes. Note that the master (pri mary) user of the system i s the onl y
one who can assi gn codes to secondary (or temporary) users, and i s
user number 02; user number 01 i s reserved for the i nstal l er of the
system.
Al l codes can be used i nterchangeabl y when performi ng system
functi ons (a system armed wi th one user's code can be di sarmed by
another user's code), except the temporary code, descri bed bel ow.
Temporary Code
Thi s code can be used to arm and di sarm the system. I t i s typi cal l y
assi gned to someone (such as a babysi tter) who needs to arm/di sarm
the system onl y at certai n ti mes. The temporary code i s assi gned to
user 15. The user of thi s code shoul d not use the Qui ck Armi ng
feature descri bed bel ow. Thi s code wi l l automati cal l y be removed
when the Master code i s entered.
Duress Code
Thi s feature i s i ntended for use when you are forced to di sarm or arm
the system under threat. When used, the system wi l l operate
normal l y, but can si l entl y noti fy the al arm moni tori ng company of
your si tuati on, i f that servi ce has been provi ded. Duress code i s
assi gned to user 16.
Important: Thi s code i s useful onl y when the system i s connected to
an al arm moni tori ng company.

Using the 5 Key
TEST
The TEST key puts your system i nto a TEST mode, whi ch al l ows each
protecti on poi nt to be checked for proper operati on. The keypad
sounds a si ngl e beep every 30 seconds as a remi nder that the system
i s i n thi s TEST mode.
NOTE: An al arm message wi l l not be sent to your al arm moni tori ng
company duri ng the fol l owi ng tests.

Emergency Evacuation

sounders so that they can be heard by al l occupants.

Taking Care of Your System
The components of your securi ty system are desi gned to be as
mai ntenance-free as possi bl e. However, to make sure that your

Replacing Batteries in Wireless Sensors
Each wi rel ess sensor i n your system has a 9-vol t or 3-vol t battery. The
system detects a l ow battery i n any wi rel ess sensor, i ncl udi ng smoke
detectors, the opti onal personal emergency transmi tter, and the
opti onal portabl e wi rel ess keypad. (The system detects a l ow battery
i n a portabl e wi rel ess keypad as soon as one of i ts keys i s pressed, and
responds be di spl ayi ng 00 on the wi red keypad.)

States, they may not acti vate or provi de earl y warni ng for a vari ety of reasons i n as many as 35%
of al l fi res, accordi ng to data publ i shed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Some of
the reasons smoke detectors used i n conjuncti on wi th thi s System may not work are as fol l ows.
Smoke detectors may have been i mproperl y i nstal l ed and posi ti oned. Smoke detectors may not
sense fi res that start where smoke cannot reach the detectors, such as i n chi mneys, i n wal l s, or
roofs, or on the other si de of cl osed doors. Smoke detectors al so may not sense a fi re on another
l evel of a resi dence or bui l di ng. A second-fl oor detector, for exampl e, may not sense a fi rst-fl oor or
basement fi re. Moreover, smoke detectors have sensi ng l i mi tati ons. No smoke detector can sense
every ki nd of fi re every ti me. I n general , detectors may not al ways warn about fi res caused by
carel essness and safety hazards l i ke smoki ng i n bed, vi ol ent expl osi ons, escapi ng gas, i mproper
storage of fl ammabl e materi al s, overl oaded el ectri cal ci rcui ts, chi l dren pl ayi ng wi th matches, or
arson. Dependi ng upon the nature of the fi re and/or the l ocati ons of the smoke detectors, the
detector, even i f i t operates as anti ci pated, may not provi de suffi ci ent warni ng to al l ow al l
occupants to escape i n ti me to prevent i njury or death.
Passi ve I nfrared Moti on Detectors can detect i ntrusi on onl y wi thi n the desi gned ranges as
di agrammed i n thei r i nstal l ati on manual . Passi ve I nfrared Detectors do not provi de vol umetri c
area protecti on. They do create mul ti pl e beams of protecti on, and i ntrusi on can onl y be detected i n
unobstructed areas covered by those beams. They cannot detect moti on or i ntrusi on that takes
pl ace behi nd wal l s, cei l i ngs, fl oors, cl osed doors, gl ass parti ti ons, gl ass doors, or wi ndows.
Mechani cal tamperi ng, maski ng, pai nti ng or sprayi ng of any materi al on the mi rrors, wi ndows or
any part of the opti cal system can reduce thei r detecti on abi l i ty. Passi ve I nfrared Detectors sense
changes i n temperature; however, as the ambi ent temperature of protected area approaches the
temperature range of 90 to 105F, the detecti on performance can decrease.

STATEMENT
NOTICE
The Canadian Department of Communications label
identifies certified equipment. This certification means that
the equipment meets certain telecommunications network
protective, operational and safety requirements. The
Department does not guarantee the equipment will
operate to the user's satisfaction.
Before installing this equipment, users should ensure that
it is permissible to be connected to the facilities of the
local telecommunications company. The equipment must
also be installed using an acceptable method of
connection. In some cases, the company's inside wiring
associated with a single-line individual service may be
extended by means of certified connector assembly
(telephone extension cord). The customer should be
aware that compliance with the above conditions may not
prevent degradation of service in some situations.
Repairs to certified equipment should be made by an
authorized Canadian maintenance facility designated by
the supplier. Any repairs or alterations made by the user
to this equipment, or equipment malfunctions, may give
the telecommunications company cause to request the
user to disconnect the equipment.
Users should ensure for their own protection that the
electrical ground connections of the power utility,
telephone lines and internal metallic water pipe system, if
present, are connected together. This precaution may be
particularly important in rural areas.
Caution: Users should not attempt to make such
connections themselves, but should contact the
appropriate electric inspection authority, or electrician, as
appropriate.
The Load Number (LN) assigned to each terminal device
denotes the percentage of the total load to be connected
to a telephone loop which is used by the device, to
prevent overloading. The termination on a loop may
consist of any combination of devices subject only to the
requirement that the total of the Load Numbers of all the
devices does not exceed 100.
