Maintaining Your System
Taking Care of Your System
The components of your securi ty system are desi gned to be as
mai ntenance-free as possi bl e. However, to make sure that your
system i s i n rel i abl e worki ng condi ti on:
1. Test your system weekl y.
2. Test your system after any al arm occurs (see Testi ng the System
secti on).
Replacing Batteries in Wireless Sensors
Each wi rel ess sensor i n your system has a 9-vol t or 3-vol t battery. The
system detects a l ow battery i n any wi rel ess sensor, i ncl udi ng smoke
detectors, the opti onal personal emergency transmi tter, and the
opti onal portabl e wi rel ess keypad. (The system detects a l ow battery
i n a portabl e wi rel ess keypad as soon as one of i ts keys i s pressed, and
responds be di spl ayi ng 00 on the wi red keypad.)
Al kal i ne batteri es provi de a mi ni mum of 1 year of operati on, and i n
most uni ts and appl i cati ons, provi de 24 years of servi ce. Three-vol t
l i thi um batteri es provi de up to 4 or more years of operati on. Actual
battery l i fe depends on the envi ronment i n whi ch the sensor i s used,
the number of si gnal s that the transmi tter i n the sensor has to send,
and the speci fi c type of sensor. Factors such as humi di ty, hi gh or l ow
temperatures, or l arge swi ngs i n temperature may al l l ead to the
reducti on of actual battery l i fe i n an i nstal l ati on.
I f you have a l ow battery i n a wi rel ess sensor, the keypad di spl ays a
LOW BATTERY message. I n addi ti on, a battery-operated smoke
detector wi th a l ow battery emi ts a si ngl e "chi rp" sound
approxi matel y once every 2030 seconds, i denti fyi ng i tsel f as the
smoke detector wi th the weak battery.
NOTE: The LOW BATTERY message comes on as a warni ng that
battery repl acement i n the i ndi cated sensor(s) i s due wi thi n 30 days.
I n the meanti me, the sensor causi ng the l ow-battery i ndi cati on i s sti l l

Silencing Low Battery Warning Tones at the Keypad
You can si l ence the keypads warni ng tones by pressi ng the
1

but the keypad's LOW BATTERY message di spl ay wi l l remai n on as
a remi nder that you have a l ow-battery condi ti on i n one or more of
your sensors. When you repl ace the weak battery wi th a fresh one, the
sensor wi l l send a "good battery" si gnal to the control as soon as the
sensor i s acti vated (openi ng/cl osi ng of door, wi ndow, etc.), causi ng the
LOW BATTERY di spl ay to turn off. I f the sensor i s not acti vated, the

Routine Care
Treat the components of your securi ty system as you woul d any
other el ectri cal equi pment. Do not sl am sensor-protected doors or
wi ndows.
Keep dust from accumul ati ng on the keypad and al l protecti ve
sensors, parti cul arl y on moti on sensors and smoke detectors.
The keypad and sensors shoul d be cl eaned careful l y wi th a dry soft
cl oth. Do not spray water or any other fl ui d on the uni ts.

THE LIMITATIONS OF THIS ALARM SYSTEM
Whi l e thi s system i s an advanced desi gn securi ty system, i t does not offer guaranteed protecti on
agai nst burgl ary or fi re or other emergency. Any al arm system, whether commerci al or resi denti al , i s
subject to compromi se or fai l ure to warn for a vari ety of reasons. For exampl e:
I ntruders may gai n access through unprotected openi ngs or have the techni cal sophi sti cati on to
bypass an al arm sensor or di sconnect an al arm warni ng devi ce.
I ntrusi on detectors (e.g., passi ve i nfrared detectors), smoke detectors, and many other sensi ng
devi ces wi l l not work wi thout power. Battery-operated devi ces wi l l not work wi thout batteri es,
wi th dead batteri es, or i f the batteri es are not put i n properl y. Devi ces powered sol el y by AC wi l l

can occur i f a metal object i s moved i nto the path.
A user may not be abl e to reach a pani c or emergency button qui ckl y enough.
Whi l e smoke detectors have pl ayed a key rol e i n reduci ng resi denti al fi re deaths i n the Uni ted

Passi ve I nfrared Moti on Detectors can detect i ntrusi on onl y wi thi n the desi gned ranges as
di agrammed i n thei r i nstal l ati on manual . Passi ve I nfrared Detectors do not provi de vol umetri c
area protecti on. They do create mul ti pl e beams of protecti on, and i ntrusi on can onl y be detected i n
unobstructed areas covered by those beams. They cannot detect moti on or i ntrusi on that takes
pl ace behi nd wal l s, cei l i ngs, fl oors, cl osed doors, gl ass parti ti ons, gl ass doors, or wi ndows.
Mechani cal tamperi ng, maski ng, pai nti ng or sprayi ng of any materi al on the mi rrors, wi ndows or
any part of the opti cal system can reduce thei r detecti on abi l i ty. Passi ve I nfrared Detectors sense
changes i n temperature; however, as the ambi ent temperature of protected area approaches the
temperature range of 90 to 105F, the detecti on performance can decrease.

CANADIAN DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATIONS (DOC)
STATEMENT
NOTICE
The Canadian Department of Communications label
identifies certified equipment. This certification means that
the equipment meets certain telecommunications network
protective, operational and safety requirements. The
Department does not guarantee the equipment will
operate to the user's satisfaction.
Before installing this equipment, users should ensure that
it is permissible to be connected to the facilities of the
local telecommunications company. The equipment must
also be installed using an acceptable method of
connection. In some cases, the company's inside wiring
associated with a single-line individual service may be
extended by means of certified connector assembly
(telephone extension cord). The customer should be
aware that compliance with the above conditions may not
prevent degradation of service in some situations.
Repairs to certified equipment should be made by an
authorized Canadian maintenance facility designated by
the supplier. Any repairs or alterations made by the user
to this equipment, or equipment malfunctions, may give
the telecommunications company cause to request the
user to disconnect the equipment.
Users should ensure for their own protection that the
electrical ground connections of the power utility,
telephone lines and internal metallic water pipe system, if
present, are connected together. This precaution may be
particularly important in rural areas.
Caution: Users should not attempt to make such
connections themselves, but should contact the
appropriate electric inspection authority, or electrician, as
appropriate.
The Load Number (LN) assigned to each terminal device
denotes the percentage of the total load to be connected
to a telephone loop which is used by the device, to
prevent overloading. The termination on a loop may
consist of any combination of devices subject only to the
requirement that the total of the Load Numbers of all the
devices does not exceed 100.
AVIS
