Reading comprehension (10 marks)

Read the following text and do the exercises answer the questions that follow:
In the UK, the custody officer has to go through a process when he or she
takes someone into custody. Hence, when this officer books-in a person who has
recently been arrested, he has to check certain things. The first question he needs to
consider is: has the person been lawfully arrested? Then he needs to decide if it is
legal and necessary to detain the person at the police station. If the officer decides
that it is, then that person can be held in a cell for up to 24 hours- so it is a big
responsibility. The officer then has to consider if the person is fit to be detained, so he
carries out a risk assessment to decide the level of risk each person presents. The
officer has to consider the arrested persons physical and mental health, if the person
is likely to self harm, if the person is a suicide risk and if the person presents a risk to
others. To help him in this process, where he feels it is necessary, the officer can call
on the police doctors and the police nurses, and other health workers who specialize
in dealing with people in police custody. For example, if the detainee usually takes
200 worth of heroin everyday they will need o see the drug referral worker.
The officers final decision in the booking-in process whether or not a detainee
is fit for his/her rights. A detainee has three main rights- the right to see a solicitor, the
right to tell somebody that he / she is in custody, and the right to read a rule book
called The Code of Practice which tell him / her how he / she should be treated
when he / she is in custody. The officer can decide to delay these rights if a person in
incapable of understanding, for example if the person is drunk, violent, or likely to
become violent (if the person is violent the officer has to get him / her in a cell as
quickly and safely as possible); or if a person is in urgent need of medical attention,
such as if he / she needs to o to hospital. The officer has to write down all of his
decisions and every event relating to a detained person, from giving the person a cup
