Helping Your Child with Homework

1. Set a Regular Time for Homework- The
best schedule is one that works best for your child and your family. For instance, one child may do homework best in the afternoon, completing homework first or after an hour of play and another child may do it best after dinner. However, dont let your child leave homework to do just before bedtime. 2. Pick a Place- Your childs homework area doesnt have to be fancy. A desk in the bedroom is nice, but for many children, the kitchen table or a corner of the living room works just fine. 3. Remove Distractions- Turn off the TV and discourage your child from making and receiving social telephone calls during homework time. If you live in a small noisy household, try having all family members take part in a quiet activity during homework time. You may need to take toddlers to another room or outside to play. 4. Provide Supplies-Have pencils, pens, erasers, paper, scissors, glue, construction paper and other school supplies available in one place. When your child has a need for these supplies, he knows right where to find them. 5. Set a Good Example- Show your child that the skills he is learning are an important part of the things he will do as an adult. Let him see you reading books, magazines, and computer screens; using math to balance your checkbook or to measure for new carpeting; and doing other things that require thought and effort. 6. Be Interested and Interesting- Read for enjoyment with your child as often as you can. Talk about school and learning activities in family conversations. Ask her what was discussed in school that day. Ask her to read aloud a story that she wrote or what she found out from a science activity. Attend school activities and volunteer in the classroom. Being involved in school with your child shows that his home and school are a team and that you value his education.
