St. Joseph: Husband of Our Lady Most Catholics are aware of the date, March 19, the Feastday of St. Joseph. I have read a good number of accounts of him, but I would venture to say that Butlers Lives of the Saints records his life and words best. This volume is one of the great classic works on Christian sainthood. Butler begins by stating that March 19 is the Heavenly birthday of St. Joseph, the date of his death in the first century. He was chosen by God to be the foster father of His Son, and spouse of the Virgin Mary. As early as 900 A.D., that date was celebrated as Josephs feastday. Were acquainted with his royal descent and his family history is explained both in St. Matthew and St. Lukes gospels. He was the protector of Our Ladys good name and given the responsibility to guide and support the holy family, including the education of Him, who, though divine, loved to call Himself the son of man. Jesus learned Josephs trade of carpentry and imitated his manner of speech. Mary, herself, seemed to confer full parental rights on Joseph when she said without qualification, Thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing, which is described in the fifth joyful mystery, The Finding of the Child in the Temple. Joseph was a man of tremendous faith and his intense love for Jesus and Mary is plain to see through his actions. He had his own personal annunciation when the Angel came to him and said to take Mary, who was with child, and make her his wife. When the census was ordered, he took her with him to Bethlehem. He found the manger for the Birth and was present when Our Lord was laid in His crib for shepherds to offer worship. He was also in the Temple when the Infant was placed in the arms of Simeon, the Prophet. He was witness to the Presentation, as well, in the synagogue. When the Angel warned of impending danger, Joseph took her and the Child into Egypt to flee King Herod. When the danger subsided, he returned them to Nazareth and raised his son in what is called the hidden years. He and Mary took Jesus to Jerusalem at the Passover when He was twelve and lost track of Him debating with the teachers in the Temple. Jesus returns home with them and is obedient to them, Scripture says. After this, Scripture no longer mentions St. Joseph, but tradition tells us that when his time came, Joseph was rocked in Jesus arms, on or about 30 A.D., right before Jesus began His public ministry. That is why St. Joseph is known as the Patron of a Happy Death. After the Blessed Mother, no holier person ever lived. The Bible pays him the highest compliment: St. Joseph was a just man., meaning, he opened himself totally to what God wanted him to do. He was completely obedient to God. Article by Marcel Normand

MASS SCHEDULE
GIRARD Sat. 5:30pm Sun. 10:00 am ARMA 4:00pm 8:00 am

We the parishioners of Saint Michael the Archangel, through leadership and strong traditions are faithful disciples of the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. We commit ourselves to be generous stewards of our faith, our parish, and our community. We strive to involve all members to be united in one parish family for the salvation of all. Notes from the Pastor: What a meaningful and inspiring way to start the season of Lent! Thats what a few of those who came to the Parish Mission have expressed. It was indeed inspiring and moving the listeners to renewal so much so that many came to receive the sacrament of reconciliation or confession Monday night! Fr. John Lanzrath did a wonderful job and was really God sent. Continue to keep him in your prayers. Thank you again to all who in one way or another or in many ways make the parish mission successful the Anniversary Committee, the Parish and Finance Councils, the Altar Society, and all those who sacrifice their time to be at the sessions. God will certainly bless you a hundredfold. Those of you who miss it, Fr. Lanzrath gave me the power point of the sessions. I will post it at our facebook page so you can take a look at it and reflect. Surely Gods grace will guide you in your prayerful reflection especially in this season of penance! More events are coming up: our pilgrimage tour to the Cathedral and Pilsen this Saturday, March 22nd. As of this writing there are 24 who have registered and so we still have 31 more openings. The fee is only $35.00 and if you want to go and could not afford the fee please tell me or leave a message at the parish office voicemail and we will find a sponsor for you. We are extending the registration until Thursday, March 20th. The bus leaves in Arma at 7:30 and will leave here in Girard at 8AM for the cathedral. Please bring your lunch pack as we will eat at the hall of the cathedral after the tour and will proceed to Pilsen. We have mass in Pilsen at 4PM and after that we will stop at a restaurant in El Dorado for dinner before heading home! Dont forget to bring your camera! Consequently, thank you to Fr. McElwee for covering for my masses here and Arma on that Saturday. On March 22nd - 23rd, our youth will be attending the Diocesan Youth Conference (DCYC) at the DoubleTree Hilton Wichita Airport. We are happy that several of our young people are going: Morgan Sevart, Faith McClaskey, Cooper Pucket, Trenton Diskin, Isaiah Fisher, Austin Lallemand, and Ethan Next Sunday(03/23/14) 10:00 AM
A., C., E. Doherty, M. Droessler Jerry Hanson Ryan Sevart Mark & Trish Peak Doherty. Thank you to our chaperones: Paula Sevart and Pat Westhoff. God bless and protect them always! Another event on March 28th, is our Souper Friday! The event has three purposes: it helps us with our fasting and abstinence (with the support of one another), it provides us an opportunity to learn and discern how we could respond to the needs of our brothers and sisters who have disabilities, and lastly, it also provides us an opportunity for almsgiving. Our freewill donation will go to the cause of this ministry. I already heard a comment from one that says I dont see the need to come to that talk because I have no family members, relatives or friends who have disabilities. This reasoning is absolutely erroneous! First, as I said in coming to this event, you are being provided support and also mutually providing support to our brothers and sisters in our abstinence and other Lenten observances. Secondly, the talk is not just meant to teach, but also to make us aware of the needs of people with disabilities and how we can give them support. In that case, you dont have to have a family member or relatives who have disabilities in order to attend! So please avail of this opportunity. Remember, one of the acts of penance we can do during this lent is fasting/abstinence and almsgiving or charitable works - joining the Souper Friday and listening to this talk will certainly aid in these observances! Advance information: The men of That Man Is You will be hosting a fish fry at Saint Michaels Hall on April 4 th, Friday at 5:30PM to 7PM. Mark your calendar! Finally, God bless all those who are travelling this week on this spring break. Enjoy and have a safe and refreshing vacation! God bless you all! Fr. Roger
