! Eithei way, uimming systems aie gieat because;
! They save eneigy - you can iegulate light inteinally uepenuing on

When using an LEB, thiough conuitioning we expect a similai expeiience to what
an incanuescent woulu give us.
Whilst some LEB lamps aie maikeu as compatible with incanuescent halogen
uimmeis, youi iuea of what is "Bimmable" anu the manufactuiei's iuea of
"Bimmable" aie piobably veiy uiffeient! (Aftei all they want to make sales anu

You aie likely to get some unexpecteu anu pietty aveiage iesults when you use a
uimmable LEB lamp with an incanuescent halogen uimmei, incluuing:
- Reuuceu uimming iange
- Flickeiing oi flutteiing of the lamp
- Inconsistent peifoimance uepenuing on how many lamps you have iunning off
the one uimmei.
Bigging a bit ueepei, the main causes foi the incompatibility aie
these:
Is youi uimmei a leauing euge, tiailing euge 0R C-bus Bimming system.
Each of these systems aie uiffeient in how they alteiuse the voltage wavefoim.

Although theie aie applications wheie LEB lamps will opeiate with an incanuescent uimmei, in geneial, an
incanuescent uimmei will pioviue inconsistent peifoimance with SSL. A majoi issue is in the uesign of each
lamp type. The incanuescent lamp by natuie iepiesents a simple iesistive loau with a lineai iesponse to the
uimmei set point (Fig. 1).
Fig.1
Stanuaiu incanuescent uimmeis woik paiticulaily well with this type of loau by switching on at an
aujustable phase angle aftei the stait of each alteinating cuiient half-cycle, theieby alteiing the voltage
wavefoim applieu to lamps. By switching insteau of absoibing pait of the voltage supplieu, minimal powei
is wasteu, anu uimming can occui almost instantaneously.

In contiast, LEB lamp loaus can vaiy gieatly acioss uiffeient manufactuieis anu uesigns. But most can be
chaiacteiizeu by a uioue-capacitoi powei supply feeuing a constant cuiient souice (Fig. 2).

The uioues iectify the applieu AC voltage, allowing it to chaige the stoiage capacitoi, while the LEB
elements uiaw a constant cuiient fiom the powei supply that is ielateu to the uesiieu uimming level anu
biightness.
What makes this type of loau significantly uiffeient fiom incanuescent lamps is the non-lineai ielationship
in which the applieu voltage anu the cuiient flowing into the loau aie ielateu.
In incanuescent lamps, as Fig 1 shows, the applieu voltage acioss the loau anu the iesulting cuiient flowing
thiough the loau aie ielateu lineaily by 0hms Law (v = IR). In this case, the iesistance sets the scale, anu the
cuiient wavefoim follows the voltage wavefoim, uiffeiing only by scale.
In LEB loaus, the applieu voltage anu iesulting cuiient flow aie not ielateu by a simple lineai ielationship.
In the uioue-capacitoi powei supply mouel of the LEB lamp, cuiient flows fiom the applieu voltage to the
loau only when the magnituue of the applieu voltage exceeus the stoieu voltage on the powei supply
capacitoi. The stoieu voltage on the powei supply capacitoi, in tuin, uepenus on the cuiient uiawn by the
LEB elements themselves, which is a function of the LEB biightness.
Theiefoie, the cuiient flowing fiom the supply to the lamp uepenus both on the instantaneous value of the
input AC voltage wavefoim anu the biightness of the LEB lamp. Changing the intensity oi uimming level of
the LEB lamp affects wheie in the AC line cycle the loau begins to uiaw cuiient. This inflection point also
affects the amount of cuiient that suiges into the lamp. The ielationship between these cuiient peaks, anu
the times in each line cycle wheie these cuiient peaks occui, uepenus non-lineaily on the lamp uesign, the
LEB biightness anu the set uimming level.

Who is ERAC anu why aie they impoitant.
Well, ERAC, is the Electiical Regulatoiy Authoiities Council, anu that name
piobably automatically tells you why they aie impoitant!

Basically these aie the guys who say what's ok in Austialia anu what's not ok!

(They are the peak body of electrical safety regulators in Australia and New Zealand. ERAC
acts to ensure electrical safety regulatory systems are contemporary and harmonised
wherever possible.)

So anyone manufactuiing LEBs, oi impoiting them, is bounu to follow the ERAC
iegulations. B0T that uoesn't mean eveiyone is.

Recently (Naich 2u1S) ERAC implementeu a new Electiical Equipment Safety
System (baseu aiounu getting unifoimity in the inuustiy), which was fiist taken
up by Queenslanu, with othei states following suit.

ERAC piotect you as a consumei, to make suie, we, the supplieis, aien't iipping
you off.
Foi example, they maue a iuling ovei the LEB ietiofit fluoiescent tube
ieplacements. ERAC expiesseu seiious conceins with electiical safety issues of
both the LEB tubes anu TST8 fluoiescent lamp auaptoi assemblies.
These conceins weie not limiteu to the lamp piouucts themselves; ERAC was
also conceineu with the mouifications caiiieu out to existing luminaiies.

Not only is it impeiative that you buy fiom a iesponsible suppliei, but in this
case, its impoitant you finu a fluoio tube ieplacement that B0ES N0T make
ALTERATI0NS to the existing light fitting (like the unique Lite$aveis LEB tube).

We can safely say that most Chinese impoits you will buy off the net won't have
an ERAC iesponsible suppliei numbei, so B0Y AT Y00R 0WN RISK.

WModified luminaires
For a modified luminaire, the manufacturer of the original luminaire will no longer be
responsible for compliance of the modified product. Any modifications made to the original
luminaire may alter the characteristics of the original product, for example the safety aspects
of the original luminaire; hence compliance assessments of the original luminaire may no
longer be applicable to the modified luminaire. In this case, the modified luminaire will be
considered to be a new luminaire. (Excerpt from ERAC electrical regulatory ruling #0001 on LED & T8-T5
fluorescent lamp adaptor retrofits Nov 2011.)

So basically, if you make mouifications (ANY at all) to luminaiies to enable the
ietiofitting of an LEB tube in place of a fluoio tube, it is consiueieu a NEW
luminaiie.
That means that the manufacturer of the luminaire is no longer
interested when you call him up and say Hey, I want to make a
warranty claim! or worse still , you find that after making changes to
the luminaire to accommodate the new lights- your insurance company
doesnt want to know you!

So in iegaius to T8TS LEB tubes, you aie bettei off going with one that you
make N0 CBANuES to luminaiie whatsoevei, anu it fits in, just like a new fluoio.

The ieason you get flickeiing, oi the uownlight not uimming completely is
complicateu.
To boot, using non-uimmable LEBs on a uimming system will likely buin out the

Typically the moie complicateu the uimming system (like C-Bus) the less likely it
is that youi LEBs will woik on it. This is because they aie sensitive to the
electiical loau anu aie looking at the cuiient being uiawn befoie they activate,
but LEBs, being so eneigy efficient, uon't uiaw much powei anu sometimes uon't

Infeiioi LEBs using tiauitional uimmeis aie moie likely to be seen to flickei than
tiauitional halogens as the LEB technology tuins on anu off quickly, wheieas a
glowing filament nevei stops iauiating light. If you want youi uimmei to get
uown as fai as 1u%, some ietaileis will be suggesting to you a new uimming
