The Challenge: Building Public Support for Meaningful Climate Change Solutions Until recently, the effects of global warming have gone unnoticed or been ignored by the American public. Nearly 80% of Americans say they notice, and they are concerned. Climate change directly threatens our economy, health, and security, and challenges our moral character. This new reality presents a new opportunity. Reality is trumping doubt and apathy. We have the opportunity to reframe the climate issue and mobilize new constituencies by focusing on the impacts that Americans see all around them. We can shift climate from an environmental issue to a social issue, resonant with the center of American values, and achieve meaningful action on climate solutions. The initiative will help catalyze a game-changing increase in support for climate solutions by using local and regional climate impacts and the need for preparation to engage the American public in mitigation. MomentUs will lead from behind, fill strategic gaps and empower effective American responses to the economic, health, security and moral challenges brought by climate change. MomentUs will: 1. Develop and support a broad network of institutional leadership from six targeted sectors, in independent and collective efforts to engage their stakeholders and the public in climate solutions. 2. Build the capabilities and enhance the effectiveness of climate solutions advocacy with research emphasizing solutions-oriented, actionable knowledge that informs programs and communications. 3. Facilitate development of a Path to Positive to coalesce the movement, guide climate policy solutions, engage and empower Americans, and effectively address the problem. 4. Build, support and celebrate climate solutions leadership by cultivating collaborative leadership among organizational and thought leaders across America. 5. Create a new master narrative to harnesses economic, political, and social forces in proactive work on climate solutions. This will be grounded in sensible moral appeal, resonate with American values, and shift the national discussion toward immediate relevancy and action. 6. Create a national campaign to build a values majority of support for effective action on climate that leads to national, state and local institutional, individual and public policy action. MomentUs will change American social norms on climate change so that we are prepared to minimize the risks and maximize the opportunities of changing climate and volatile weather. In addition to building the social basis for climate solutions, this work will complement and support other key climate advocacy work, including grassroots advocacy and efforts to directly build political will for climate solutions.
