The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County decreased over the month
to 8.7 percent in February 2014 from a revised 8.9 percent in January 2014 and was below the
rate of 10.2 one year ago. Civilian employment increased by 13,000 to 4,516,000 in February
2014, while unemployment decreased by 7,000 to 432,000 over the month. The civilian labor
force increased by 6,000 over the month to 4,948,000 in February 2014. (All of the above
figures are seasonally adjusted.) The unadjusted unemployment rate for the county was
8.9 percent in February 2014.
The California seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.0 percent in February 2014,
8.1 percent in January 2014, and 9.4 percent a year ago in February 2013. The comparable
estimates for the nation were 6.7 percent in February 2014, 6.6 percent in January 2014, and
7.7 percent a year ago.
Between January 2014 and February 2014, total nonfarm employment in Los Angeles County
increased by 27,700 to 4,155,300.
• Educational and health services posted the largest month-over increase, up 10,300 jobs.
The bulk of the employment gains were concentrated in educational services (up 8,600)
with a significant amount added in colleges, universities, and professional schools (up
6,100). Health care and social assistance gained 1,700 jobs over the month.
• Other industries that added jobs over the month were government (up 4,900), leisure
and hospitality (up 3,300), information (up 2,200), financial activities (up 1,900), other
services (up 1,300), manufacturing (up 600), and construction (up 100). Mining and
logging noted no change in employment levels.
• Trade, transportation, and utilities registered payroll cutbacks totaling 4,400. Retail trade
(down 5,600) and transportation, warehousing, and utilities (down 1,100) were
responsible for the entire employment drop over the month, but wholesale trade
(up 2,300) offset the total.
Between February 2013 and February 2014, Los Angeles County nonfarm employment grew
by 86,100 jobs, or 2.1 percent.
• Professional and business services reported the largest increase year-over, adding
27,000 jobs. Administrative and support and waste services (up 13,700) accounted for
51 percent of the employment gains in this industry sector. Professional, scientific, and
technical services (up 11,700) and management of companies and enterprises (up
1,600) also expanded payrolls over the year.
• Educational and health services also recorded a boost in employment over the year,
up 25,900. Health care and social assistance (up 22,000) was responsible for
approximately 85 percent of the payroll gains with a significant amount of the additions in
social assistance (up 12,800). Educational services reported an expansion of 3,900 jobs
over the year.
• Also recording job gains over the year were trade, transportation, and utilities
(up 15,900), leisure and hospitality (up 13,300), construction (up 8,000), information
(5,300), other services (up 2,600), and mining and logging (up 200).
• Manufacturing posted the largest year-over decrease, down 8,800 jobs. Both nondurable
goods (down 5,900) and durable goods (down 2,900) declined over the year.
Government experienced employment cutbacks over the year (down 3,200). Local,
federal, and state government lost 1,700, 1,100, and 400 jobs respectively. Financial
activities contracted by 100 jobs. Finance and insurance reduced its payrolls by
2,900 but were offset by real estate and rental and leasing job gains (up 2,800).
