StiflingroadtrafficcongestioninDelhi,populationapproximately20million,has becomeaneconomicliability.WithmoremotorvehiclesthanMumbai,Calcutta andChennaicombined,overcrowdingandpollutionwasthreateningthe capital'sabilitytoreachitspotentialintherapidlyexpandingIndianeconomy. Calcutta/KolkataopenedIndia'sfirstmetro(16.5km)in1984,buttheprojectdid notinspireconfidenceintheIndianGovernmenttopromotefurtherschemes. DelhiMetroRailCorporation(DMRC)wasestablishedbytheGovernmentof IndiaandtheGovernmentofDelhiinMarch1995tobuildanewmetrosystem inthecapital.TheprojectisbeingcarriedoutinphasesPhaseI(65.11km)and PhaseII(128km)havebeencompleted. ThecapitalinvestmentforPhasesIandIIwas$2.7bn.Thirtypercentofthetotal investmentwasfundedbyGovernmentofIndia(GoI)andGovernmentofDelhi, whileanother60%wasfinancedthroughaloanfromJapanInternational CooperationAgency(JICA).DMRCpaidback$100mtoJICAbyAugust2010. In2011,theDelhiMetroprojectbecamethefirstrailwayprojectintheworldto becertifiedforcarboncreditsforreducinggreenhousegasemissions,bythe UnitedNations.DMRCsaved112,500MWofpowerbyusingregenerative brakesinthetrains,andreducedcarbonemissionsby630,000tyearly.

Theproject
Aftermorethan40yearsofstudiesintoarailbasedmasstransitsystem, DMRCbeganconstructionon1October1998. FundingprincipallycamefromaJapaneseloanandIndianpublicfunds,the latterintheformofequity.,PhaseIandPhase2werefullyoperationalby January2013. TheDelhiMetroconsistsofsixlines,withatotallengthof190kmwith142 stationsincluding35undergroundstations. DelhiMetrowasdesignedtobeintegratedwithother publictransportandDMRCsignedanagreementwith busoperatorDelhiTransportCorporation(DTC)to integratemanagementandthroughticketing.However, limitedtakeuphasledDMRCitselftosupplyaround 200busesofaqualityconsistentwithMetrooperations

toworkfeederroutestostations.Selectedprivatebus January2013." operatorswillpaybackDMRCoverfiveyears.There are18designatedparkingsitesatMetrostationstofurtherencourageuseof thesystem. InMarch2010,DMRCpartneredwithGoogleIndia(throughGoogleTransit)to providetrainscheduleandrouteinformationtomobiledeviceswithGoogle Maps.Thisfreeservicewillallowthecommuterstogetthelatestservice informationandplantheirjourneys.

Routes
Line1(RedLine)runsbetweenDilshadGardenandRithala.Itcovers25.1km, serves21stationsandhasarollingstockof26trains.ThefirstsectionofLine1, fromShahdaratoTisHazari,openedinDecember2002.APhaseIIextension fromInderloktoRithalaopenedinMarch2004andtheShahdaraDilshad GardensectionbecamefullyoperationalinJune2008. Line2(YellowLine)runsbetweenJahangirpuriandHUDAcitycentre.Itcovers 44.65km,serves34stationsandhasarollingstockof60trains.Thefirst section,runningbetweenVishwavidyalayaandKashmereGate,openedin December2004.ExtensionsopenedbetweenKashmereGateandCentral SecretariatinJuly2005,andbetweenVishwavidyalayaandJahangirpuriin February2009. The14.47kmQutabMinartoGurgaonlineextensionandtheHUDACityCentre toQutubMinarextensionofLine2wereopenedtopublicinJune2010.The 12.53kmlineextensionfromCentralSecretariattoQutabMinaropenedin September2010.

Line3(BlueLine)runsbetweenDwarkaSector9and NoidaCityCentre.Itcovers49.93km,serves 44stationsandhasarollingstockof70trains..Thefirst sectionofthelineopenedinDecember2005andran fromBarakhambatoDwarka.Subsequentsections openedbetweenDwarkaandDwarkaSubcityinMarch 2006BarakhambaandIndraprasthainNovember 2006IndraprasthaandYamunaBankinMay2009 andYamunaBankandNoidaCityCentreinNovember 2009.

The2.76kmsectionfromDwarkaSector9to21was openedon30October2010.Operationsonthe2.5kmextensionfromAnand ViharISBTtoVaishaliandGhaziabadbeganinJuly2011. Lines2and3passthroughthecitycentreandbusinessdistrictatConnaught Place,servedbyRajivChowkstation. Line4(OrangeLine),whichopenedinJanuary2010,runsbetweenYamuna BankandAnandVihar.Itcovers8.74kmandservessevenstations. Line5(GreenLine)runsbetweenInderlokandMundka,andisthefirststandard gaugerailwaylineinIndia.Itcovers15.15km,serves13stationsandhasa rollingstockof15trains.ThelineopenedinApril2010,andbenefits100,000 commutersresidinginwestDelhi.The3.32kmKirtiNagartoAshokPark extensionopenedinJune2011. Thesectionhastwostations:KirtiNagar(atgrade)and SatguruRamSinghMarg(elevated).Line6(VioletLine) runsbetweenCentralSecretariatandBadarpur.It covers20.16km,serves15stationsandhasarolling stockof30trains.ThesectionbetweenCentral SecretariatandSaritaViharwasopenedinOctober 2010.TheSaritaVihartoBadarpurextensionwas openedinJanuary2011. NewDelhiRailwayStationtoDwarkaSector21Airport ExpressLinewasopenedinFebruary2011.This 22.7kmlinehassixstationswitharollingstockofeight trains.

Infrastructure
Line2isundergroundforitsentire11kmlength.Allbut oneofits15stationshavebeenbuiltnearly13mbelow groundusingbycutandcovermethodsChawriBazar, whichliessome20mdown,neededtunnellingtobe built. Allstationshaveescalators,elevatorsandtactiletiles toguidethevisuallyimpairedfromstationentrancesto trains.Manyofthestationsareequippedforrainwater collectionaspartoftheirenvironmentalpolicy. Oneofthemorechallengingconstructionprojectswas MandiHousestationonLine3,managedbyBritish companyMottMacdonald.Asthestationislocated underabusythoroughfare,muchofthestationhadto bebuilttopdown,withthediaphragmwallpanelsbuilt fromgroundleveltoformthepermanentwallsofthe station.

NewDelhiRailway StationandDwarka Sector21inthe suburbsofIndia's capitalcityNewDelhi. Itpassesthroughthe IndiraGandhi International(IGI) Airportbefore terminatingatDwarka Sector21.Itwas openedtothepublic inFebruary2011after 27monthsof construction.

DMRCalsoprovidessubwayfacilitiesinalltheundergroundmetrostationsas partofPhaseII.BicyclerentalisalsoavailableattheVishwavidyalaya,Pragati Maidan,PatelChowkandIndraprasthametrostations.

Rollingstock
Thefirstwaveofrollingstockwasmanufacturedbyaconsortiumcomprising HyundaiRotem,MitsubishiCorporationandMitsubishiElectricCorporation. InitialsetswerebuiltbyROTEMinSouthKorea,withlaterexamplescompleted inIndiabypublicsectorundertakingBharatEarthMoversLimited(BEML). BEMLisalsoresponsibleforthemanufacturingcoachesundertechnology transferagreement.Themanufacturingisunderprogress. Theairconditionedtrainsconsistoffour3.2mwide,stainlesssteel,lightweight, althougheightispossible.Thetrainshaveautomaticdoors,secondaryair suspensionandbrakescontrolledbymicroprocessor. DelhiMetrohasafleetof280coaches,whichDMRC runsas210trainseveryday.Eachtraincan accommodateabout2,290people,240seated. Maximumspeedis80km/h(50mph),witha20second dwelltimeatstations.Traindepotsarelocatedat KhyberPass,Najafgarh,ShastriParkandYamuna Bank.

InMay2011,BEMLreceivedacontractworthRs9.2bn ($205m)fromDMRCtosupply136intermediatemetro cars.Thedeliveryisexpectedtobecompletedbytheendof2013.

InMarch2008BombardierTransportationannouncedan87m($137m) contractfor84MOVIAmetrocars,afollowontoanorderfor340placedinJuly 2007.ThenewvehiclesweredeployedaspartofthePhaseIIexpansion. InSeptember2011,Bombardierreceiveda$120morderfor76additional MOVIAmetrocars.Thiswasafollowoncontracttoanorderplacedfor114 vehiclesinthemiddleof2010.Deliveriesundertheneworderwerecompleted in2012. DMRCreceivedthefirstMOVIAmetrocarfromGermanyinFebruary2009.The first36vehiclesweremanufacturedinGoerlitz,Germany,andtheremaining 388carswerebuiltatBombardier'sIndianmanufacturingfacilityinSavli,South Gujarat. InOctober2012,Bombardierdeliveredthe600thMOVIAmetrocartothe DMRC.

Signallingandcommunications
Thetrainsusecentralisedautomatictraincontrol(CATC)comprisingautomatic trainoperation(ATO),automatictrainprotection(ATP)andautomatictrain signalling(ATS)systems.

Intercomsareprovidedforemergencycommunicationbetweenthepassengers andthedriverineachcoach,andontrainannouncementsareinHindiand English.TherearealsoroutemapsandLCDdisplaysystemsineverycoach. Farecollectionisthroughcontactless,storedvaluesmartcards.Themetrohas itsownpoliceforce,andatrainingschoolatShastriParkisruninassociation withHongKongMTRforoperationalandmaintenancestaff.Securityis supportedbyabout5,200CCTVcamerasatstations. InOctober2007DMRCawardedBombardierTransportationa$43mcontract forthedesign,manufacture,supply,installationandtestingofsignalling equipment.TheCITYFLO350systemwasinstalledon37kmoftwoofnewline sectionsofthePhaseIIexpansion. Theelectronicinterlocking,operationandautomationcontrolsystemsforthe thirdlineweresuppliedbySiemensTransportationSystems.

Thefuture
Althoughthesystemoperatedatbelowprojectedpassengerlevelsin2007, partlyascribedtotraincapacityprovinglowerthananticipated,ithasachieved anoperatingprofit.About2.2millionpeopledailyusedtheMetroin2012.It carries5%ofthecity'scommuters,andtheprojectisnotonlymeetingitsaims intermsofattractingformerroadusersandreducingroadcasualties,butitis stimulatingeconomicdevelopmentneartostations.Lowcostcyclehireanda secureparkingtrialwaslaunchedtofurtherreduceroaduse. PhaseIIIandIVextensions,whichwillexpandthenetworkto413.8km,are scheduledtoopenin2016and2021respectively. PhaseIIIwasapprovedinAugust2011.Itinvolvesconstructionof140kmline with92stationsand17interchangepoints.Itisscheduledtobecompletedby 2016,carryaboutfourmillionpassengersandcostaboutRs77.01bn($1.4bn).

Inadditiontotheexpansionsplannedinthesefour phases,anewlineisbeingconstructedtolinkNoida Sector62andGreaterNoida.Itwillcrossthe IndraprasthaNoidaSector32line. TheGhaziabadDevelopmentAuthorityalsohasplans forafifthphase,whichcouldextendtheVaishaliline (BlueLine)toMehrauliviaIndirapuram(Ghaziabad).

Awelcomepartofthesystemforoverseasvisitorsisthe19.5kmextensionto IndiraGandhiInternationalAirport.Journeytimestothecentrearecutto16 minutesfromthepresentonehourbyroad.The135km/h(84mph)linkwillbe extendedastheairportaddsnewterminalfacilities. Thefirstconstructioncontracts,covering7.5kmofline,wereawardedtoAlpine SamsungHCCandAfconsinOctober2007. DelhiMetroisthoughttohaveinspiredgreatersupportformasstransitsystems Indiahasmanyprojectsnowintheplanningstage.
