ABOUT APaCHE:
Established in 1954, Apache Corporation has grown to become one of the worlds top independent oil and gas exploration and production companies. Driven by a culture of integrity, hard work and respect, Apache has a strong commitment to the health and wellbeing of its workforce, with employee wellness in fact a core value of the companys benets philosophy. Central to Apaches wellness strategy, the company utilizes employees biometric and health risk assessment data to identify key health needs and applies uniform measurement tools to monitor and compare health outcomes across all regions. While Apache has traditionally offered biometric screening and localized initiatives (such as onsite u vaccinations, tness classes, in-service health education services and health coaching) across its sites of operation, over the past three years the company has started to integrate resources and expand its wellness schedule globally, across its six countries of operation.

CHaLLENGE:
Regionally dispersed and remote worksites present a logistical challenge for Apaches overarching efforts toward improving employee health, productivity and quality of life. Traditionally, Apache has struggled to include its eld and offshore employees in many of its wellness initiatives and activities, since many spend little to no time in the ofce due to travel or geographic isolation. In line with its coordinated wellness strategy, Apache sought an all-inclusive turnkey solution, which could be centrally managed yet have the capacity to effectively and equally engage each and every employee.

The Global Corporate Challenge was an easy way to engage our geographically dispersed workforce in a single, effective program. With professionally crafted and targeted promotional materials, employees came forward by the hundreds to ask to join in the challenge. Working relationships and team dynamics became stronger, and personal success stories began to emerge. Unlike other programs, engagement increased over the 16 week period, and our employees genuinely began to make positive changes toward healthier behaviors. Apache is pleased to have implemented the Global Corporate Challenge this year and look forward to rolling it out to our other locations across the world having a global competition next year.

APACHE: Case stuDy ACTiON:

In 2012, in complement to a suite of offshore and eld wellness solutions, Apache piloted the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC) across its U.S. operations (corporate ofces in Houston, plus sites across the Gulf of Mexico, Permian Basin area in West Texas and New Mexico, and Central Region in Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle) with a view to global roll-out in 2013 pending pilot success. The GCC provided Apache the action step needed to reach out to U.S. regions in a coordinated effort and allowed any interested employee to simply sign up with a team and get moving, regardless of location. Furthermore, the GCC addressed Apaches specic set of challenges in that it was a behavioral change program unaffected by circumstances such as location or site resources. The initiative also was centrally manageable. With strong, demonstrated support of working managers most notably Apaches executive VP of HR leading by example and encouraging a competitive spirit among their teams, the GCC was rolled-out across U.S. sites utilizing the programs comprehensive suite of communications collateral and management tools in tandem with internal support activities.

REsULT:
The GCC was well-received and taken up by 560 participants (80 teams) from across even the most remote offshore and eld sites of Apaches U.S. operations. United by GCCs online interface and a fun, team-based challenge, geographically dispersed Apache employees joined together with sustained camaraderie to motivate, inspire and support each other through the 16-week behavioral change program. Considerable health and workplace benets were achieved, with success evidenced not only by the quantiable and recorded results, but also through the testimonials and visible enthusiasm of participants. With the 2012 U.S. trial deemed a resounding success across both implementation efciency and employee and workplace health outcomes, Apache intends to roll out GCC participation as a global initiative in 2013.
